Alvin was great - patient with the kids and distractions in the house, skilled with our old and out-of-tune piano, and passionate about the piano and music.
Let me start off by saying that it has been an honor and privilege learning from Sam. He is an amazing singer and an incredible teacher! I had previously taken vocal lessons from another instructor, but I wasn't too glad with the teaching method. I began taking lessons from Sam after reading the positive reviews on his profile. After my first class with Sam, I knew that I had made a good decision. After a couple weeks, I've seen major improvements in my voice quality, breathing technique, and vocal dynamics. In addition, I've started to sing with more emotion and connect with songs at a level that I didn't know existed. I'm excited to continue learning from Sam and I cannot be happier! Sam's very knowledgeable in all aspects of music, and his experience with soul, jazz, blues, and contemporary music really resonates. I believe what makes Sam an amazing teacher is his ability to connect with his students - he's very passionate about teaching and he makes it his goal to take his students to the very top. I trust in Sam to help me reach my goal because I know that Sam trusts in me. If singing is your passion, I highly encourage you to take lessons from Sam - he will help you find your voice! - Gurpreet
Carey is extraordinarily well-informed in all musical styles and is very patient and good-humored as he communicates to his students a thorough grounding in musical theory. In doing so, he is very passionate about fulfilling his professional obligations to his students. In addition, he is himself an excellent jazz musician. I recommend him to any budding musician without reservation.
Jack Philipoom came to my attention at my nieces wedding reception in Williamsburg , Virginia where he was performing jazz guitar with an ensemble. It was there that I booked him for a garden party at my McLean , Virginia home. The flow and style of this extremely talented musician added an elegant ambiance to our evening. His personality is delightful, and our guests found him to be simply charming. I will definitely rehire him, and have highly recommended him to our friends.
A wonderful pianist and amazing teacher! Couldn't have asked for someone better to learn from the past few years!
Carman Bryant is an amazing vocalist who channels the soul and vibe of Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, and Mary J. Blige to name a few, not to mention her ability to sing in any style or genre, from soul to blued to jazz to funk.
Jonathan has played for several events for me. He is one of the most gifted piano players I have ever worked with, playing with heart and passion that lights up the room! Guests and clients are always impressed with his performances. He plays everything from Jazz and Pop, to Broadway and classical.
We were in Arlington for 3 yrs until we had to move because of a State Department job in D.C. My 4-year-old took piano lessons with "Ms.Penny" the entire time. She was one of her youngest students, Ms. Penny said, and she said she doesn't teach children who are younger than 4, so I doubted they'd get very far working together. I was so wrong! At her first recital, my daughter played two beginning pieces from her repertoire book flawlessly. She also played a duet with Ms. Penny, and it was so great, I got teary-eyed. My daughter was proud of herself, rightfully so, and I was proud of her. (And I still am.) By the time we had to move, she was 7 and beginning Clementi Sonatinas. Penny's an outstanding, well-educated pianist who's used to playing concerts, but somehow she also knows how to work outstandingly with little children, it's obvious. Other parents and I talked, and we agreed Penny does almost anything to keep her students happy and engaged with their piano studies. Lessons were fun. There was never any shortage of laughter in there. And kids liked to practice for Ms. Penny, it seemed. She was the best introduction to piano we could have asked for.
Sadie is a accomplished musician who is a fine pianist as well as organist. As a music director at a Catholic church, I have employed Sadie as a subsitute organist. I also attended a piano recital she gave as a senior at Hillsdale College. Sadie's musicality and versatility make her an ideal choice as a solo artist or as an accompanist.
Scott Schoem is a wonderful piano teacher who has worked with my children for four years. He is a talented musician himself who shares his skills and love of music with his students. Scott always is upbeat, patient and encouraging. My children enjoy their lessons with Scott and have learned to play piano well under his tutelage. He varies the songs they learn from classic pieces to jazz, rags and blues to holiday music to keep practice time fresh and fun.
We hired Kim's trio for our jazz soiree and they were excellent! Kim let us know a few days prior to the event that he couldn't make it, and gave us the option of canceling or having the trio w/ another pianist playing in his stead. We could have gotten another band altogether (three replied to our request on Thumbtack), but we went w/ his option of the substitute pianist and could not have been happier. The trio was fabulous, attendees from the young to the not so young loved all the tunes, and everyone had the best time. We are definitely putting Kim and his trio or quartet on our slate of events for 2018.
Mood for Guitar delivered, from start to finish. They were spontaneous as well as disciplined, fun as well as serious. They are excellent musicians and warm and lovely people who are responsive, creative, and fun-loving. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.
I highly recommend Simon for your wedding, funeral, or other need. I was blessed and honored to have Simon provide the music for a funeral service earlier this year. With Simon's talent as a vocalist, as well as his skills as a composer, pianist, organist, and accompanist, the music was superb. He worked with me closely on the planning, and his suggestions for the service were excellent, including the addition of a soloist with whom Simon had worked. Many people told me afterwards how much the music touched them and uplifted them on a sad occasion, and I was touched and uplifted as well.
Ron gave me a lot of help when I was learning to accompany singers and saxophone players. He showed me chord configurations that made me sound like a pro. I was asked to join a jazz combo. He was also great at accompanying me as a singer.
We had a wonderful experience! Our members absolutely loved the addition of the pianist for our Valentine's Day dinner.
My students progress quickly. I teach students how to produce a good sound and be technically proficient from the very first day. My lessons also involve music theory and music history in order to create a well-rounded performer. My students and I study a wide variety of repertoire, from Bach to Prokofiev. I teach how to critically listen to oneself, and how to practice efficiently. My goal is for students to become more and more independent. My lessons are distinguished by strong attention to basics as well as finer nuances. Equipped with these skills and knowledge, students will be able to apply them to whatever they choose to learn and play.
I take great care and pride in being a jazz pianist and performer. This begins with my own study and practice of the instrument and extends to performing live. It is vitally important to me that I provide guests and audiences with an enjoyable and memorable musical experience.
Very dedicated and extremely professional with services and performces..
We are a Group of Professional Musicians who work in the Mid Atlantic area. We have worked together for over 8 years and can provide the appropriate music for your event in a an unobtrusive professional manner. We have professional level, well maintained equipment.
We play traditional jazz, blues, ballads and swing. The Not-So-Modern Jazz Quartet Plus is a band playing in the club scene of the '20s, '30s and '40s. It loyally replicates this music with top local jazz musicians, and has been playing constantly since 1983. The basic quartet is made up of piano, bass, drums, and clarinet. When a piano is not available, the quartet swaps a rhythm guitar. We usually play with 5 or more musicians, especially when playing Dixieland, thus the "plus" in the band's name. The musicians depend a great deal on their improvisation skills, and the band has an extremely huge book of traditional Dixieland, old standards, and swing era tunes. The music of Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Benny Goodman are the repertoire showpieces of the combo, along with the Great American song books. We play regularly at the Westlawn Inn (second Saturday of the month) and at St. Elmo's Coffee Pub (every Thursday). We are available for other regular gigs and scheduled affairs, like weddings, parties, public events, dances, and New Orleans style jazz funerals. We are celebrating our 38th year as a regularly playing band.
One critic described her as "a spell-binding professional who rivets attention with her magnificent, clear and articulate voice". Iva Jean Ambush is a wonderful interpreter of the Great American Song Book. She founded Ambuscade, which is a group of teachers and educators who enjoy the balance of performing and a family life. They have performed at the following: Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival International Association of Jazz Educators Conference In The Streets Festival Frederick's 4th of July Celebration (3 years) The East Coast Jazz Festival The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and more Ms. Ambush and Ambuscade have covered complete weddings, including the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing portion, and she has been the mistress of ceremony (MC) for religious ceremonies, weddings, fashion shows, etc. This is a testament to her leadership and versatility. They can perform anything from "Crazy" by Willie Nelson, "Come Sunday" by Duke Ellington to "At Last" by Etta James/Beyonce and everything in between, including some original music! The band's size and instrumentation can be modified to fit your entertainment needs, making Iva Jean Ambush and Ambuscade the ideal band for any event. From a duo to big band, Ambuscade is the best choice.
