Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

I hired Everbright Movers to help me move into my first home . The movers showed up late, which caused me a two hour delay for all of my other obligations . I had to contact the movers to get an ETA. In efforts to speed up my day I helped the movers move the boxes. The movers securely wrapped my belongings and I appreciated that . However, when it was time to pay the movers were very rude . They didn’t not want to discount the services after showing up late . The mover even said “You are not going to tip me “ . Whenever possible I try to tip workers for their services. However, sadly the unprofessionalism was not shown . I would not recommend these movers again .

The movers did an excellent job with my move. They were timely with their arrival and handled all my items with care. I was afraid that all of my items would not fit into my storage unit. The movers professionally organize my unit so that all items would fit perfectly. I would definitely hire them again for my next move.

From the very beginning I had a great experience. My original move date was Jan. 2nd but due to an issue with the apartment I was moving into we decided to switch to an updated apartment which meant I had to switch my moving date from Jan. 2nd to the 5th which Ali had no problem doing and I was so grateful since it was short notice but he worked it out for me. Ali's crew was awesome!! They arrived on time and handled our items with care. Very professional and they moved quickly. I'll use them in the future and recommend them to anyone who is moving. This was the BEST moving experience I ever had. Thanks again guys your all GREAT!!

Antwan and his crew were great. Polite, professional and efficient. They moved very quickly. My move had 2 stops(storage & apt.) and was completed on time. They handled all our items with care and seemed to move at the speed of light. I would most definitely recommend and hire them again. After watching how they worked, my mother even asked him for his card. I can honestly say it was a fantastic moving experience.

This was a move for a friend of mine who is ill. The movers did a good job of moving her things within the same apartment complex. We didn’t have anything negative to say with the exception of we were expecting them at 9am but they arrived at 10:25. Once they did arrive they began working and worked efficiently and professionally.

If I could give this company a 0/5 rating I would. Even after explaining beforehand to the owner, Ali H., the list of items I wanted to be moved, the movers still showed up with a truck too small to carry everything. I wasn't paying for 2 separate trips, so I decided to move the rest of the items left behind on my own, which is an inconvenience if you're traveling a considerable distance away. My main complaint with this company is that my fairly new flat screen TV now has a cracked screen that has rendered it unfixable and unwatchable. I contacted the owner, Ali, and he was completely indifferent, unapologetic, and downright unprofessional when I brought this matter to his attention. He refused to take any responsibility for the damaged item which is truly baffling to me when his movers were the ones who wrapped and packaged the tv, transported the tv, and subsequently unloaded the tv to the new destination. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND OR USE THIS SHAM OF A COMPANY FOR MOVING SERVICES AGAIN. If you value maintaining the integrity of your items, you won't either.

Where do I start, I received an awesome quote for a move from Maryland to South Carolina. The quote was to include 3 movers, the truck for a 1 bdrm of 2 people and the funds that were on the invoice weren't due for 7 days after the move, I'm thinking wow this was great. Well the were on time which was great however they showed up with a 15' and 2 guys (the owner and his brother in law). He then approached me and said how are we going to do the payment (I'm looking at him like what). He said can I get half now ($600) for gas so I agreed. I was already looking at the truck and thinking that is to little for this move. I told him we (me and my mother) we're going to try to find another truck because it wasn't enough space for out things to fit on the small truck he can with. After an hour of driving around and no luck we returned and they had as much as they could get on the truck. I told him there was nothing available but we still had a couple more things that has to go on the truck and told him some of the things need to go to my sister's house because we were not going around the corner we were moving out of state (8 hours away). He agreed and then we were able to get the other things. He stated he would go back to my sister's house and get those things and until this day the job isn't complete and they sent me a text letting me know they would be bring the rest of my items on August 11th and still nothing but they worried me about finish getting the rest of the money and as I told them the job isn't complete so why should I give you the other $600. This was by far the worse experience I've ever had with a moving company. They breeched their contract and harassed me about money they think they should get. DON'T USE THEM FOR LONG DISTANCE MOVE YOU WILL BE SORRY.

We hired David to move items (bedroom set, couches, tables, chairs, rugs, miscellaneous) from Baltimore to Asheville. He responded to my initial query immediately with a competitive estimate that was honest and fair. I appreciated his accessibility and flexibility when we had to delay the move by a week because of bank issues. David's pick-up and delivery were on-time and without any issues. His staff are friendly and helpful. We'll definitely use them again when the need arises.

They did a great job with our move. I was pleased and would recommend them for future use. I felt like they were clear in terms of pricing, procedural policies and “extras”. There were no surprises and they did great!

The Rice brothers were AMAZING!! They were punctual, incredibly diligent, respectful and mindful. They worked with me to be considerate of my budget and kept me in the loop the entire time. They took their time and took care of my things to ensure their safe travel. This move was incredibly difficult due to extenuating circumstances, but the Rice Brothers made all the difference in my transition. Thank you!!!

The company was used to move 3 pieces of antique furniture from Indianapolis, IN to Baltimore, MD. The central office was prompt in answering the calls, willing to have us wait until they had a truck coming to allow us a lower rate. The crew which loaded and the one unloading were thoroughly professional wrapping the pieces for protection and unwrapping, inspecting each piece upon delivery, Obviously take pride in their work.
