I am a bathroom remodeling contractor in DC and couldn't get to do a bathroom demo and I found Ed's company through Thumbtack and was the top rated service provider on the requests. Service was great and was always able to get into contact with either Ed or one is his managers. Recommend for demo work.

Very satisfied with the level of service. The contractor arrived on time and performed the job efficiently. He made a couple of recommendations to help improve my plumbing issues. I took those suggestions and had him install them. Things are working better than before. I will definitely call on 1st Home Pro Services again if I ever need other plumbing work. Great Job!

We wanted to start off saying that we love Thumbtack. We hired Tim because of the wonderful reviews that he had and he was so quick to get back to us on a proposal. He was very fixable with his schedule and ours. We were amazed that he offered to come out New Year's Day to patch up/fix our dry walling in our up stairs bathroom. Tim arrived in a timely manner and immediately started tackling the job. Another thing that was so touching about hiring him is he brought his wife along to watch him work because he had a busy schedule the next couple of days and wouldn't get to spend much time with her. We both enjoyed their company as he worked on the bathroom. He actually taught my husband how to patch dry walling, which was very nice because we are getting our house ready to sale. He finished the bathroom project in a few hours and we were very happy with the results. We will definitely hire Tim in the future and recommend him to anyone that needs an all around handyman.

James fixed one mysterious leak and another leak that he found during the job. He worked quickly and both leaks are resolved. James is great because he clearly communicates throughout the entire process -from arriving at the site, explaining and showing the problem, and how to fix it. I'm a new home owner with little knowledge of plumbing, so I was appreciative of the extra time he took to explain things and the extra knowledge he gave me about managing plumbing in the winter. I've hired three plumbers on thumbtack for leaks in the house, but James has the best responsiveness, communication, and value for excellent work.

I had a leak in my upstairs bathroom water pipe and the water dripped through the drywall ceiling of the main floor, hired Vanlal and he arrived ASAP (~20mins), fixed the leak. The water still was leaking from the ceiling which were accumulater before the fix, so Vanlal gave me some time and came back later and double checked the leak. I got his contact and will hire him in future.

Gabriel came by on very short notice and took care of my kitchen sink leak quickly. He was very neat and clean while working. He noticed some other issues with my pipes and offered to fix them while he was here. I'm glad I got his expertise, as I had gotten other plumbers previously for the same problem who did not have the same insight. I highly recommend Gabriel.

This is the first time I used Angela Maria Home Services, and I could not be more pleased with the results! The cleaning service was both excellent and inexpensive. The cleaner was professional, well equipped, speedy, and thorough! When I looked over the work, I had no need to ask for any tou ch ups. The whole house smelled SO GOOD. Fixtures sparkled; counters, floors, cabinets, and wood furniture were free from any deb ris or dust and looked and smelled so nice. Appliances were clean and shiney. The bathroom, tub, floors, and fixtures were squeaky clean. Even hard to clean areas, such as the tub were so clean. I will definately use this service again! And, the price can't be beat. It was the lowest price and the company responds quickly to any communication. WELL DONE!

Jose with Brandon contractor was fantastic. Jose and his team submitted the most competitive and thorough bid out of all the competition and proved to be very flexible with timing too. I elected to purchase all the supplies for my bathroom remodel and Jose did everything to help me in that process. Couldn't be happier with the final product.

I'm glad we hired Julian. He has been very quick to respond to questions and has given us straight answers about how to handle a misbehaving water heater. He replaced a faucet and trap in our bathroom and his work looks good and was very reasonably priced. There was no mess to clean up. When another job kept him longer than expected he kept us in the loop so we knew when to expect him. I really appreciate how easy it is to reach him and get an answer to a question, the caliber of his work, and his straight forward honesty. We will definitely hire him again.

We hired Erick's service for deep cleaning our house prior to listing it for sale. Previous experiences with other cleaning services have been hit or miss so we were a bit anxious, given that a good cleaning job is really important for the house to show well for sale. I cannot praise Erick's team of two women (his family in part) enough for the cleaning job they did in our house. I will give you specific examples which portray their exceptional work - 1. we recently touched up paint on the walls and a few drops probably spilled on the floor. His crew went down on the floor to scrub minute drops off while vacuuming/mopping our hardwood floor; 2. They took out the glass receptacles off the light fixtures and washed them to make them appear new (and they never were so clean when we lived in the house!). 3. They opened the windows and dusted and wiped off dirt from the outside of the window. 4. Bathrooms and kitchen with granite counter top were spotless and shiny! We believe the house shows very well to make the best impression for potential buyers. I will strongly recommend Erick and his team for cleaning services, and actually like the fact that it is a small, family run venture as opposed to the large scale cleaning services. SLV

Joshua was easy going, fully knowledgeable, competent, quick, very affordable, excellent work ethic, and he cleaned up after himself. So very satisfied with the replacement of my bathroom faucet and stopping a leak on the pipe going to the floor. He was phenomenal and extremely professional and courteous. Gotta share his information with all of my friends and co-workers should they need an experienced, licensed plumber with such a calm demeanor.

Patrick's work quality and creativity are fantastic. He created custom shelves for us in a bathroom that didn't have storage, and the result is beautiful and functional and exactly what I wanted. I also asked him at the last minute to mount our TV over the fireplace, and he came MORE than prepared, with extra cables and parts, in anticipation of getting the TV up on our plaster walls but also minimizing the appearance of the cords. He's also extremely punctual, responsive, and professional. Highest of recommendations from me, and can't wait to work with him again on our next project!

Ernesto did an outstanding job installing a new vanity w/faucet in a bathroom, replacing a toilet, and installing a new shutoff valve. He showed up on time and made sure that there were no leaks after his plumbing work. I would hire him again.

Had a great experience using J-Team for a utility sink repair (that fell from the wall and broke the drain pipe). I received a very reasonable preliminary quote through Thumbtack and his subsequent complimentary visit to assess the work matched that price. The work turned out to be a little trickier and longer than anticipated but it gone done very well. I liked it so much I've already asked for quotes for additional things I need done in the house (from bathroom caulking to a kitchen backsplash installation). Jaime is a great guy and I recommend him!

Julio was awesome. He installed a new vanity and sink in my sons bathroom. It turned out to be more complicated than just removing the old one and putting the new one in but he stayed until the job is complete and paid very close attention to details.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
