Uma is a caring and loving individual and it shows in her work. I met Uma at a time when my personal trainer suggested that I get massage therapy to complement my workouts. I found Uma and the Lotus Wellness Center and my life changed from the first appointment almost four years ago. Not only did I receive the benefit of holistic massage therapy, I also started back on track with my spiritual awareness, something I had put on hold for too long. Visiting with Uma awakened my spirit again for which I am very grateful. I have also taken Reiki classes with Uma and am proud to say that I am a Reiki Master and use Reiki in my everyday life. I highly recommend an experience with Uma because it will most certainly change your life at some level. She is special and she will help you find the specialness in you.

I was struck by lightning late June and as a result am dealing with so many health issues. Deanna is amazing and is helping me get my life back, my sessions with her are the highlight of my week. Plus she gives me quick lessons about how to do healing work on my self. She is very knowledgeable. The sessions are extremely grounding and relaxing - Jin shin Jyutsu truly aligns the mind, body and spirit with the universe and Deanna helps make that happen. I sleep better and eat better, and I am noticeably more calm when I find myself in situations that once made me nervous or anxious. I was diagnosed with PCOS two years ago and since seeing Deanna my periods are regular and consistent without the help of any medication! A weekly session with Deanna is giving you and your body the self care you deserve.

As a public school teacher myself, I am amazed at the amount of thought and degree of sensitivity Danny puts into his training sessions. He individualizes his training, tailoring specific exercises and degrees of difficulty to each person's ability. He is extremely motivating, and obviously loves what he does. I would say he is a talented trainer who honestly wishes the best for each person. He goes the extra mile in researching relevant topics important to his clients' health and well-being. We highly recommend him. Excellent trainer!

Mr. Tsakounis (Thom) is a skilled and caring therapist. We came to "A Quiet Journey Counseling " center for couples counseling. My husband was very reluctant at first, but quickly found Thom to be a supportive and understanding ally. Feeling like Thom "got " him, and us, allowed our work with Thom to progress quickly. As a mental health therapist myself, I have very high expectations for fellow counselors. Thom met or exceeded my expectations! He is well versed in a number of holistic, cognitive behavioral and Gestalt modalities, and a genuinely caring human being. While my husband and I have more work to do, Thom has supported us and given us new tools to communicate more effectively in our relationship. I reccommend Mr. Tsakounis whole-heartedly!

I am a 50 y/o woman who has been very athletic all my life until my health detetiorated the last 10 years during the discovery and eventual diagnosis of RA, Sj, & Fibro. Anne was very impressive with her knowledge and experience in Rolfing, the technique, as well as other bodywork methods. She made me feel very comfortable and safe. She was very thorough in my history and her assessment of my needs and goals. She knows her craft and "understands people." She is extremely perceptive, and caring but also straightforward... I needed that because I tend to "power" through injuries and would treat this condition the same if she had not picked up on my tendencies. Her space is clean, welcoming, and designed for treatment and serious bodywork vs an aesthetic massage experience. She was able to provide immediate relief and a path to sustained improvement of my pain through some "very specific" activities... I was elated, actually shocked that they worked so quickly! It's not a cure but anything that can bring about significant improved quality of life that it realistic over time, it's priceless. As for price points, she is on par with other Rolfing providers, perhaps a little lower than average for DC. I have no concerns or complants to share and hope this is helpful in your search for a serious and effective bodywork practicianer.

Tina B. - Chantilly, VA I have been a client of Lotus Garden Wellness Spa, LLC on and off since 2014. I have had several different therapies there and all of them have been successful. Nicole is very thorough, professional and knowledgeable. She explains everything to you and answers ALL your questions in a way that helps you make an informed choice for your health care. And her sense of humor is a plus which helps you to relax and raise your spirit which makes you more receptive to the treatment. I feel safe and confident in her care. My recent visits have been for symptoms of Carpal Tunnel in my right hand due to repetitive work at the computer keyboard. I requested CYMA therapy for this issue. On the first visit, my symptoms on a scale of 1-10 were: numbness (5-7); tingling (5-7); pain in wrist (especially, at night which interrupted my sleep: (8-10). Also, had some arthritic pain in my left thumb (3-4). After four visits my pain, tingling and numbness have all subsided tremendously (down to 0). Two weeks later I still have no pain. Can’t say enough about her quality of care. Highly recommend her to anyone.

Having Florence as my massage therapist has truly been a blessing to me. I was referred to her by a friend when I complained about pain in my knee. After two sessions with her, my knee was completely fixed and I was back to full health. She displayed great professionalism and thorough understanding of the body's anatomy as she fixed my knee. Five months on, I can't imagine myself seeing a therapist other than her because I go back home feeling better after every visit. I encourage anyone who needs to be catered for and wants their money's worth out of every massage to try Florence. She is good at what she does.

The goal at OurSpace Acupuncture is to make available to everyone healing and health care that is safe, accessible, affordable, effective, and drug free. In order to do this, we provide it in a community setting, where multiple people receive acupuncture pins to help maintain wellness and aid the healing of ailments. Because of this format, we are able to allow people to pay what they can afford. Too often, people aren't able to take advantage of the many benefits of acupuncture (that comes with consistent treatment) because of the cost. Our sliding scale is $15-$40 per 1-hour treatment; you decide what to pay; no questions are asked. Scheduling an appointment is easy. We are open on the following days and times: * Tuesdays through Thursdays: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. (last appointment is at 6:45 p.m.) * Fridays and Saturdays: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (last appointment is at 1:45 p.m.) Please use our online scheduler on our website. Or if you prefer, call us, or email Farris to schedule an appointment. We accept cash, checks, and online prepayments as well. We look forward to working with you to meet your health goals!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

    • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
    • Nutritional medicine
    • Botanical medicine
    • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
    • Hygiene
    • Counseling
    • Minor surgery
    • Homeopathy
    • Acupuncture
    • Intravenous and injection therapy
    • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

    Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

    Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

    • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
      • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
    • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
      • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
      • Do I need a referral?
      • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
      • What will the co-pay be?
      • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
    • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.
