Local move, 25 miles from suburb into major city old neighborhood. Ruben (sp?) and Javier were extremely skilled movers who handled all of our belongings with the utmost care. They finished a job in 2:45 that most other movers I have worked with would have taken at least 25% longer. I would most certainly recommend them for a local move and may consider them for our long distance move from MD--> SC next year as well. Thanks, David and crew.

We were very happy with the service+price combination of Nova Movers and packers. It was very easy to schedule with them in short notice. Workers were very hard working and always had a smile on their faces even though they had a 12 hour stretch of moving heavy furniture. Amine Fettar was also very nice and courteous and responded quickly when we needed additional space and help to move. The only recommendations that I would have is to give a good estimate of the items you intend to move. The initial plan was for them to send one truck with two men and it ended up being two trucks with 4 men as the space and time it would need to move was not well estimated. Although we ended up paying more than we expected for the additional service, we received a very good overall price from Nova Movers. I will definitely keep them in mind in the future and recommend them to others.

From the initial call to discuss details to the actual move, Name Your Price (NYP) Movers was incredibly helpful. After contacting NYP through Thumbtack, Ali and I spoke over the phone to discuss details of the 2 movers, 17' foot truck, 3 hour proposal. When I inquired about an extra fee for stairs, Ali suggested having 3 movers instead of 2, and they could still do it within the 3 hour timeframe, which sounded good to me. He then sent over a detailed confirmation proposal that outlined their services, licenses, etc. and I paid a $50 deposit to confirm the move date. Closer to our move date, Ali called to confirm everything and ask if I needed any supplies. I said I didn't think so, but he told me that his staff would arrive, fully armed with supplies in case I change my mind. Luckily, they did indeed come with supplies because it turns out I did need them! I needed blankets for the wood furniture (free of charge), some plastic tape to tape the blankets in place, and then plastic wrap to cover up my white couch (four rolls of tape and wrap were pretty minimal in cost). Stas called me about an hour early to let me know that they were on their way and were running about 30 minutes behind, due to traffic, and I appreciated the notice. He arrived with his two colleagues, Larry and a another man (whose name I didn't catch, sorry!). They parked the truck, and we did a walk through of my condo and what needed to be wrapped, moved, etc. It took approximately an hour to wrap furniture, take apart my two beds (platform beds with all those slats and screws and one hydraulic lifting storage bed), and pack everything up in the truck. I don't know how they did it, but they got everything into that truck with plenty of room to spare! We drove over to my new home, and then did another quick walk through of the rooms, describing where the big things were going, as well as the garage, where I had a number of boxes we moved over ahead of time, that needed to be moved to their final rooms. Bless these guys, but they were so nice and professional, and moved every single thing where it had to go, despite the fact that we have four floors in our new home. They got everything moved into my new home, and the requisite furniture reassembled perfectly, and finished the entire process within three hours. I remember remarking that it was three hours, on the dot, while I was signing off on the work. I had previously been informed that I could pay the remainder of the work in cash, or there would be a nominal fee to pay with a credit card. I had every intention to get cash out, but I was busy packing and forgot. Of course, I had no idea beforehand that I would need some supplies either, so I wouldn't have had enough anyway. To pay via card, Stas called Ali to run my card, but fortunately, when I had originally paid the deposit online, I had opted to save my card info. Ali asked if I wanted to use the card saved, confirming the last 4 digits, and I did, so that made the process super quick and easy. I would gladly hire Name Your Price Movers again and recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. Thank you very much!! (and sorry for taking so long to write a review, it's taken time to unpack and get internet in our new home!)

When our originally-booked movers cancelled on us at the last-minute, these guys were ready within 24 hours to step in and help out. Three men & a truck showed up within the 1 hour window we requested and the move (1 small office) went very smoothly and quickly. They did some light packing, disassembly & reassembly of furniture and were very courteous.

Zebna movers did a great job boxing up things that a hoarding tenant left... The job started with two men but third guy joined them once they saw then work required... I was very pleased with their willingness to adapt to the job that needed to be done and the consistent communication between me and the manager of Zebna movers, Bab... I definitely would hire them again for move job!! I recommend them to anyone looking for a very fair price and excellent work ethic ..

I hired Proah movers for moving furniture around my house a couple of times and my experience with them has been consistently excellent. Bede and his team are very hardworking and always making sure that the client is satisfied. Both times they were able to accommodate last minute requests. While on the job, they were very careful with furniture and worked at a very fast pace. I would highly recommend them. If you need to move this is the company to hire!

We moved 8 days before Christmas 2016. We had movers come on a Friday to pack and load us. It was a two day drive to our new home with a baby. The movers arrived Monday morning to off load us get everything placed. (THIS WAS A THREE DAY TURNAROUND) We had a second drop off at a storage unit. The moving guys were as professional and curious as it gets. Rose was great, and this move was planned and excuted to profection. Highly recommend if you need honest, reliable movers. Zero damage.

I recommend NK Movers, after being cancelled on by another one here on Thumbtack, they showed me professionalism by sending me a contract and calling me every step of the way. We both had some issues with timing but we were able to work together and keep each other informed. In light of my building manager being irresponsible and insensitive, they kept their cool, and helped me remain stress-free, i feel that they cared about making this move as great as possible. Will definitely recommend!

This company was recommended to me by my daughter, who has used their services twice. Dealing with Pick Up Movers was the best moving company with which I have dealt. The employees are very prompt, efficient, neat, polite, and honest. They are very careful with furniture and breakable items. Our move was very sudden, which made it difficult for all of us, but the packers and movers took everything in stride and performed at a very high level. I am very grateful for their hard work, efficiency, and patience.

My two movers showed up and gave 100% the entire time they were there! Would definitely recommend this company to my friends. The only negative I have is that on Thumbtack and my responses the price states $89 and yet when I went to website is say $99. When I asked about it, I was told that the price they quoted was wrong and they still charged me the $99. They should either change the price on here or honor the price they advertised.

My two movers were Dewayne and Antoine! They showed up on time and OMG! Very professional and quick. I offered water because those guys really worked hard and steady. When they arrived to my house, I gave them a walk through and told them what all needed to be moved and they just got right to it! I will hire them again. I promise you can’t go wrong. Just be sure you give them the accurate size and info for the job you need done. I probably could have used one more mover to have them finish up in 2 hours instead of 3, but I’m sure it would have cost me more money to have 3 movers! Anyway, I’m super satisfied!!!! THANK YOU DEWAYNE AND ANTOINE ❤️

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
