Rosa surpassed our expectations at the cake tasting. She went above and beyond to make it a great experience. She not only created small cakes (which were adorable), but also cupcakes and provided us with samples of the cakes broken down, which allowed us to try the cake separate from the filling and the icings so we could mix and match what we wanted. Throughout the cake tasting she was never pushy and that made us appreciate her as a professional even more. We've decided to hire her for our wedding cake.We loved our experience and the fact that she was so accommodating regarding our tight budget, made it an easy choice. I had first hired Andrea for my daughter's 3rd birthday party, which was a "Minnie Mouse Bash" the cake was customed minnie mouse cake and it was AMAZING! Especially since prior to choosing which flavor she personally came to my home with a tasting of each cake and icing which was just delicious and so well put together. I found out i was expecting and when it came time to my gender reveal party I used Andrea's services again for cake pops and cup cakes that were so delicious all the guest truly enjoyed them. I will be using her services again and I highly recommend her, she does make other treats besides cakes and so far what I have ordered has been a real treat!

FOODWAYS AND FOLKTALES by Vera Oye’ Yaa Anna In January 2008, Vera Oye’ Yaa Anna, presented a program for the African Section of the African and Middle Eastern Division of the Library of Congress entitled “Foodways and Folklore.” As a culinary Griot, Ms. Yaa Anna prepared a buffet meal of Garlic Collard Greens, Couscous, Jerk Turkey, Spinach and Cilantro and fried plantains, with Auntie Oye’ Pettit Rice Bread Muffins for dessert and a beverage of Alkaline tea, made with ph balanced water. The program was open to the public, and as it was held on a Saturday, many families came. Understandably, there were no left overs. The carefully and tastefully presented food was served alongside folktales and history about how these foods came to be, and the interconnection between Liberia, the native land of Yaa Anna, and the United States. She told the history of how freed slaves came back to Liberia with some influence of the times they spent in the United States. Later in the program, Yaa Anna told humorous, moral tales in the fashion of the Palaver Hut, a Liberian tradition where people hold discussions and tell stories. The three-hour program, which included time to eat the delicious food, time to hear the history of the food and time to hear amusing stories with some sage information embedded in them. Yaa Anna’s engaging story-telling, healthy and lovingly prepared gourmet dishes made for a fun and educational Saturday for the two dozen visitors, who then asked “when are you going to do this again?” We here at the Library of Congress would gladly extend the invitation again for this excellent program.

I cannot more highly recommend Vera, both for own knowledge and skills in preparing food, but also for her kind, encouraging manner in instructing a "novice" in the kitchen. When I was introduced to Vera, I had recently been diagnosed with celiac disease, which had necessitated a complete overhaul of my eating habits. That "lifestyle" change was complicated by the embarrassing reality that I had never really learned to cook in the first place. Just after we met, Vera invited me to attend a marvelous Capitol Hill social event, for which she had prepared some of the food. Knowing that I had to be gluten-free, she included a wonderful basket of Auntie Oye’s Petite Rice Bread Muffins, made from rice flour (instead of wheat). They were a BIG hit at the party … with everyone! When I told her I wanted to learn how to make those little muffins for myself, she invited me into her own kitchen, and graciously and patiently walked me through all of the steps to prepare her wonderful recipe.

Ms. Vera Oye opens up her house for a monthly event of "story telling" and "buffet-degustation" which are becoming more and more well-known and well attended. Part of the "thrill" is knowing that the food on the buffet will be so good! Every month, Vera surprises us with delicious fresh meat/fish/vegetables, always fresh, cooked from scratch. This month, her "jerk turkey" was to die for. I also love her fresh "kale ginger salad" and her "quinoa salad". Her table is always festive with a beautiful African table cloth and matching cloth napkins, real plates and silverware (none of the paper plates/plastic silverware syndrome at Vera's house!) I highly recommend Vera's culinary talents and wish her the best in her endeavor.

Our wedding experience with Purposefully Designed Events was wonderful!! We initially booked their month-of coordination service and then took advantages of their vendor saving deals! They were able to make our cake, calligraphy signs, our wedding invitation suite and all of our florals for wayyy under the other local vendors!! Dorina’s emphasis is on cooking quick, nutritious meals using wholesome ingredients. Her forte is Italian cooking but she has a broad knowledge of foods and other styles of cooking. Her classes are well organized. Topics touched on during class include the choice of ingredients, possible variations and substitutions, nutrition, tricks of the trade, and tips on where to shop. Dorina is friendly and engaging and her classes are informative and enjoyable. Her class is the perfect starting point for someone with little experience in cooking who wants to learn the basics. Her class would also be valuable for a person with some experience in the kitchen who wants to broaden their perspective.

When we first met to discuss what we wanted in a wedding cake you thought our selection of pumpkin spice with a French Buttercream filling off the wall and so did my Mom. However, instead of trying to talk us out of it, as she did, you accepted the challenge and delivered a fantastic cake. It was extremely moist and the pumpkin spice flavor was not over powering. Everyone raved about the cake and the ruins writing on each layer. Your cake had a place of honor in the alcove off the main hall on our wedding day. It fit in perfectly with the medieval location we selected for our wedding ceremony and reception. I highly recommend your pastries and cakes, without reservation, to anyone planning a wedding, party or other special event. The madeleines you added to our order, filled with flavored Chantilly cream, were far from the normal “boring” madeleines we had from other shops.
