Stef does it again! We learned a few years back that our cat does not do "boarding" well. So for a trip that took us out of town for one week we hired Stef again. Before she took care of two animals (dog and cat...see a previous review). This time it was just the feline. Not only did Stef do what we needed (come in twice per day to feed our pet; change his sand; play with him) but she also checked our mailbox and removed packages from the front porch. One thing I learned about our cat is that he eats less when people are not around. Stef was good about reaching out to me to check on how little our pet was consuming, just to give us an update. When he had a "hairball incident" she cleaned it up, and reported it to me. Her reports were not cumbersome to receive while on vacation as they were few, and only when there was a true concern. I am delighted to have someone so trustworthy coming to care for the cat! I heartily recommend Stef's Pet Services!

Having quality care for the pet that I love so very much, required much research and someone who genuinely cares about my loved one. After looking for quite some time for a local pet sitter, I was blessed to have found Walking with Renzo & Ruby! My dog and I were one of the lucky ones that got the Renzo & Ruby experience! Their amazing owner Natasha is top notch and is very accomodating. She met all the needs that I asked for and more! Natasha welcomed us to a break the ice session. Mink and I were invited over to meet Renzo & Ruby to help with my dogs socialization skills, this helped with Mink's aprehesion she sometimes has with other dogs. Natasha offered the in home care and drop by visits if I needed it. I was assured that my dog would do fine in her home or mine because Renzo & Ruby were very good about sharing their space! Mink's nervousness diminished as she warmed up to Natasha and the introduction to her babies Renzo & Ruby, prior to her stay! I was elated and impressed at the attentiveness being displayed. While on vacation, Natasha sent the cutest pictures of Mink on the ride over and while warming up to her dogs! I will definitely recommend her services to anyone who is looking for superior care for their pet/s. Thank you Natasha! Alindia

We had two chocolate labs that Waggy Walkys took care of for 4 years. They were very dependable and my dogs loved them. They walked and feed the dogs everyday and when we were out of town on vacation or business Waggy took care of them as well. As my dogs got older and sick, I saw a very sensitive side to our walker. She helped with administering the medicine and called during the day to let me know how they were doing. My dogs are in heaven now and when we get our next dog we will call on Waggy to be a part of our family. I recommend Waggy to my family and friends.

Sam was my much loved Maine Coon cross who outlived his kidneys. Vet said he was not in pain, so I extended his life almost a year by hand-feeding him several times daily (& nightly) and administering saline fluid subcutaneously every 3-4 days. Dates for a Central American vacation planned with college friends caught up with us while he was still enjoying all that attention, and I was frantic to find someone who could manage his care while we were away. Dee was wonderful with Sam! She took excellent care of him. I recommend her heartily for any pet, but especially one needing special medical care.

Vicky was great! She not only took great care with all of our animals, she handled my anxiety well! We received photos and notes every day with updates of the animals and how they were doing. I told her not to worry about one of my super shy cats because if she tried to find her, it would stress her out more than just being left alone...well, the first day I get a picture of that cat just chillin with Vicky! When we came home we were greeted with an, "Oh...it's you. You're back" bored look from the animals...that was GREAT! I knew she kept them so happy they were not pining away for us or stressed out. I had used another pet sitter for seven years due to convenience, but the animals seemed stressed when we returned. With Vicky, everything was great.

Cupid Pets is the best pet care service! My husband and I have two cats who we spoil and love like children so I really wanted to find a service that care for them as well as much as we do. Cupid Pets has been amazing. We have never had an issue scheduling service even on the major holidays. The sitters are great about accommodating eating habits and concerns, medication administration, litter issues, etc. They also happily send me updates and photos at my request. I trust them wholeheartedly to care for my pets and my home.

Shatiya & company are amazing! There aren't many DC area pet care companies that have a vet tech on staff. My Yorkie Carmen is 16, and receives some super tender loving care from Petstigious Pets. Highly recommend!

I had to leave town for 3 days but didn't want to leave my Yorkie at a kennel. Shaki was the perfect solution. My doggie was able to stay at home at my condo In SoFi where he feels safe and Shakir visited him 4 times per day to feed, walk and play with him. She kept me updated with lots of photos and videos with location tracking of their walks. Shaki is very loving with pets. When I came home my doggie was calm and happy almost as if I had never left. I highly recommend Shaki's pet sitting services.

Tyler provides exceptional care for our 2 very active dogs daily for mid-day walks. One of our dogs is very difficult to leash walk, and Tyler’s patience and compassion has made a big difference. He was able to provide extended visits when we were out of town. He is reliable, flexible and trustworthy. He provides feedback by text at each visit. I strongly recommend Loudon Pet Care.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

How much do dog walkers charge?

The cost of dog walking depends on several factors including length and frequency of dog walks, the number of dogs on the walk, distance to your house, and any additional services you request. The national average cost range for a dog walk is $10-$20, but that price will vary based on where you live in the country and the regional cost of living and doing business.

The longer the dog walk, the higher your costs will be. Dog walkers offer a range of walk lengths, from 15-minute potty breaks to long hikes of 120 minutes or more. For example, a dog walker may charge $15 for a 15-minute walk and $35 for a 35-minute walk. Requesting that your dog be the only animal on the walk will typically mean a higher cost than if you permit your dog to be walked in a pack of dogs. You may be able to get a discounted rate if you have more than one dog to be walked. For example, a professional dog walker may charge $28 for one dog or $33 for two dogs on a 60-minute walk. If you need additional help — like feeding the dogs or giving them medication — dog walkers may be able to provide this service at an additional fee. Dog walkers may charge higher rates for walking your dogs on holidays.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
