Awesome. David was on scene the first hour to ensure the team was on track. It was a long 12 hour day and 20000 lbs later all good were moved to my new home. Originally David had 5 movers coming, but ended up bringing 6 due to the size of the job at no additional cost. Aside from my shoes getting lost (have no idea how that happened) :) the move to my 5 bedroom was pretty smooth. If anything I was not prepared enough, and the additional free wardrobe boxes were a huge assist!! I negotiated a flat rate with David to avoid the possible extended move, which was about 1/2 of lowest price quote I had. Thanks David and the team for a job well done. Mike

I had a long distance move from Fairfax VA, to Philadelphia. I was very pleased with the 2 hardworking movers that came, Ronado & Hubert!!!!! However the truck that I had was not large enough. I did tell Ali that I had a lot of things and very bulky furniture, but he felt that with a 1 bedroom apartment everything would fit in a 14ft truck, but then said I will send you a 18ft truck. And as I knew everything couldn't fit I needed the 24ft truck. He, the boss, proposed that I would have to leave things behind as we were behind on schedule, and he would have to cancel my move. The 2 workers were so honorable and hard working and we were able to fit everything into the truck and my car!!!! It took some rearranging but it was accomplished due to the patience and deligence of Ronado and Hubert, despite the bosses pressure to just leave me there and unload the truck, or leave some of my things behind. Then once we got to the storage, he began to call and say that the payment needed to be paid before unloading the truck, that was annoying, but I did make sure that it happened! Maybe he had a bad experience with another customer or something, so I just let it go!!!! But I did name my price for a move on Sunday May 31st 2015, everything was boxed and packed by me, also all my things were disassembled, so they only needed to do was protect all my glass tables and furniture, load the truck, drive to Philadelphia, unload to the storage unit and drive to my second location and unload the few items left, ALL of this was done for a AMAZING PRICE $600 dollars flat rate!!!! And because the 2 movers were so great I tipped them $50 a piece!!!! So this was a $700 dollar move total, all I really could afford with excellent workers!!! So despite the few annoyances I was very pleased with my move!!! And would recommend them, just be clear on what size vehicle that you need, and bigger is always better, but it all worked out!!! Thanks NYPM Tisa Price

I felt they overall did a good job. It took longer than expected but we had a lot of stuff to move. They had 2 extra guys come later in the day to help speed things up and didn't charge me extra $ per hour. There were no hidden fees, cost of the truck and the agreed upon hourly rate. Happy moving!

Two weeks ago, I hired A-1 Moving Company to help with my move to Charlotte, NC from Arlington VA. After hearing so many horror stories about moving companies, I was very close to doing this move by myself. I did call multiple companies but felt more comfortable after speaking to a representative over at A-1 Moving Company named LaShawn. Unlike other companies, I was given a fixed price estimate that was fair and guaranteed. The day before my move, the work men came and wrapped and disassembled my furniture. The next morning at 7am, they were en route to NC. I felt at ease knowing that my furniture was not being stored or transported with multiple houses. Once they arrived, the same work men unloaded and reassembled my furniture. Overall, it was an excellent experience and gave me hope that there are good companies out there still! Nothing was broken, the delivery was on time and at a flat rate, and the crew was courteous. Thank You A-1 Moving Company! Blake D.

We agreed on a flat rate ($250) but my move only took an hour and I could have gone with another company that offered hourly rates and saved 50% but that was my fault for not negotiating better. They were professional and great otherwise.

I just want to say that we used Great Nation Van Lines for the first time and they were awesome! They covered all the furniture with moving blankets and we didn't have a dent anywhere. I have a few Lladro figurines and porcelain pieces that are not replaceable. they all made t as well! They showed up right on time each day and had no problem working in an extra trip to drop furniture off at my daughter's home. I would recommend using this company if you want first rate service.

They gave me the best price. Even though the flat rate they offered was under estimated with the amount of work I had, they didn't complain or try to ask me for more. However, I couldn't resist to pay more because of their hard work. I'm very satisfied with their service. I will definitely hire them again if needed. Good job guys and thanks for all ur hard work!

Timothy and his team did a fantastic job with my move. I moved from a 4 bedroom townhouse with 4 flights of stairs to a 2 bedroom apartment. This townhouse is not easy to maneuver, but still, Timothy and his team were able to take on the task without hesitation. I could tell immediately that Timothy cares about his customers and understands the importance of getting the job done efficiently while ensuring that his team handles all items and belongings with care. He is extremely responsive to all forms of communication and was in touch with me frequently to make sure he had all the details that he needed to make the move as smooth as possible He even removed and disposed of a few additional items including an armchair and a box spring that I no longer needed. Last but not least, Timothy also quotes his customers very fairly. I was quoted a flat rate that I thought was very reasonable for all the work that I was requesting of him. I would highly recommend Timothy and his team to all my friends and family!

By far, this was the best-ever moving experience from a wonderful, caring, and exceptionally reliable mover. Joseph Mason and his helper arrived well before the appointed time (which was GOOD!) and had the most amazing "can-do" attitude about the job (moving a four-room apartment's items to a storage facility). Exceptionally well-done, and quick, and was flexible about run-over in time taken for the move (due to more items than originally estimated to move). While he has his own pick-up truck, the move required a box truck, which I rented, and then Joseph and his helper filled the truck for the move and unloaded at the destination (I drove). Top recommendation for anyone considering a move with limited number of items (using his open pickup truck) OR a bigger move where you rent your own truck from Penske/Home Depot, and Joseph of Swift Moving Care will do the work. Outstanding all the way around. Honest, reliable, caring. Very impressed!!! Could not have been better!!

I decided to hire PMS movers because they provided a reasonable flat rate. This is the first time I've ever hired movers and I'm pleased with the decision I made as they were very professional and courteous. My move was scheduled for 8:30 am and Nicole telephoned me the night before and rescheduled to 1:00 due to a move from that day that spilled into my move. To ensure appropriate service and compensate for my inconvenience, I was originally scheduled for 3 movers and was provided 5. The movers were scheduled to arrive at 1:00 instead they arrived at 12:00 noon prepared to work. The staff of PMS are professional and caring. They took proper care of my furniture and was very careful not to damage the walls. I would definitely use this company again and I highly recommend their services.

Jacob quoted me a flat rate for the move, which included truck rental and equipment and no hidden fees for gas or mileage. He showed up on site with another gentleman, we made introductions, and they came in to survey what needed to be moved. They quickly devised a strategy for the best way to pack the truck, given what needed to be moved. They worked skillfully and quickly. When we got to my new building, they were just as great. They confirmed with me where I wanted various boxes and pieces of furniture, and even helped me get rid of some empty boxes I had after I had started unpacking.

Adrian and his team mate Brad were excellent with their service. They moved my 1 bed room apartment to a town home in the space of 3 hours. Brad was able to hold a 8 foot sofa all by himself as both of them moved it through the gallery of our apartment on the 2nd floor. They were really fast with their moving and I would definitely recommend them to anyone. Very punctual and excellent with communication :)

The salesman Pierre was helpful from beginning to end... His team of movers came in and saw a stress filled situation and jumped in to help us get done... The weather proved wet and they wrapped EVERYTHING to ensure it didn't get wet! They protected the floors. They had a challenging move over some rough ground and never complained or dropped anything. I rate this company as OUTSTANDING. Pick Up Movers will be the First call when we move again.

The movers were professional, careful, and strong! They moved me out of a ground level condo to a condo with over 40 steps. Although the task was arduous (climbing steps in hot sun and temps). All of my belongings arrived in-tact and in working condition - including 3 flat TVs (42 inch - 48 inch), computers, and glasses. They dissembled and resembled two queen size beds and 1 large entertainment center. Value was worth money spent! I took the flat rate $900.00 - so there were no surprises at the end. The manager, Danny, is extremely professional and stayed in contact with me throughout. I would recommend Pack-n-Move. (Note, I did not rate them on punctuality because they were 1/2 delayed - but no fault of theirs. Traffic on beltway (695) is always a hassle.

I hired M&M Moving & Hauling to move larger pieces of furniture out of my grandparents' home. There were a couple of issues with the scheduling where they had miscalculated the time needed for the move scheduled just before mine, but Marvin was up front about it and worked with me to find a mutually agreeable time for my move. There was also a problem with how they placed a couple of the items within the storage unit and I think they were just hot and tired by that point, but we were able to resolve the issue. As I had items moved into a storage unit, I don't know how all of them fared from the move, but they seemed to do a pretty good job with packing it in the truck and making sure items that I wasn't able to wrap were covered during the drive. They also provided a very competitive flat rate that did not contain any hidden fees. I really liked that I knew exactly what I would be paying, but it did take a couple of messages to figure out what was included in the cost. Overall, they did a good job and did it quickly and efficiently. I would hire them again.

Though there were some false starts, still giving this company 5 stars. I got honest work at a workable rate, which means a lot to me. I'm a little fish in big sea, so very glad he was willing to help.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
