"Greg and Brent are the dream team!!!! I absolutely recommend them and would shower stars upon them if I could!!! They were totally fabulous from beginning to end. It can be really scary to try to get a contractor, and, if anyone has had bad experiences in the past with contractors like I have, let me assure you that this company is nothing like those bad apples at all!!! These men are 100% trustworthy, open, reliable, and perfectionists in their work. I have absolutely NOTHING bad to say about them!!!! Several months ago, my husband and I decided to get estimates for installing a new floor in our basement as well as possibly re-carpeting both sets of our stairs. Brent came out and talked to us at length, and he had such a no-pressure, friendly, professional, helpful personality, I knew right away we had made a good choice inviting him over for an assessment. Greg got back to us with the estimate in a very timely manner, and we told them that we wouldn't be able to afford the flooring, possibly for about a year. They were absolutely kind about it and never made us feel guilty or pressured in any way or like we had to choose them. I especially appreciate that because I get extremely anxious around people who try to talk me into things!!!! As it has turned out, we ended up needing to move back to our home state of Missouri, and so we wanted the flooring done on a much faster time frame than we'd initially thought. I called Brent up and he immediately knew who I was and greeted me! I was pretty darn shocked, since it had been months since we'd talked! They were able to accommodate us in every way I could have imagined. We had a small mold issue, and Brent came over one evening right away to pull up the carpet so the mold remediation expert I had hired could come look at the whole floor. That spoke volumes to me about their character. I appreciated their help beyond what I can express. My husband and I are pretty clueless when it comes to any home improvement stuff. The fact Brent would come over so quickly and eagerly to help us get the carpet out was just like an 'everyday thing' to him, and I know they must just have a philosophy to treat their customers with such astonishing high priority and kindness!!!! Another thing I really, really liked about this company was they gave us accurate estimates and showed us what different types of flooring would cost, made recommendations based on our needs, and showed us a variety of samples. They weren't just into selling us 'high end' stuff, but really focused on the solutions we needed and gave us quality flooring choices, too. They helped us know what about be best and Brent even called us up to let us know one of the colors we'd chosen had variation and asked if we'd like to choose something else. They are just so thorough and they clearly want you to be totally satisfied with your floor. Today Brent, Greg, and a young man I believed named Cody came and installed our floor. I am over the moon I am so happy with the job they did. I didn't need to supervise at all, which was such a relief, too. I came out from upstairs at the end and it was like something you'd see on Extreme Home Makeover. The flooring is unbelievable. The carpet on the stairs is plush, and they used a high-quality mat under the carpet that is lasting. I went downstairs to see the floor and I have never seen such a perfect floor. I just wanted to cry I was so happy. Also, the way they worked together was awesome. Cody was super friendly, too, and all three were VERY respectful in our home and non-intrusive. It was really fabulous to have the dream team over!!!! And I have to say one last thing--on a personal/character level, this company is truly the best to work with. We've had a lot going on, with my grandfather passing away and I have a disabled dog, among other things. The house has been messy sometimes when they've come over and I've never felt judged or embarrassed. Brent has always commented on my dogs as being sweet, petting them, and I can tell he means it from his heart. He has never been in a hurry and has always wanted to hear about how we're doing. We've learned about his family and his cats and he has really been a very good *friend* to us on top of everything else. That's above and beyond the level of anything I would expect from someone coming in to do work in our home. I lost my father in 2004, and I've been taken advantage of by home improvement companies before, because sometimes I don't really know what is fair. This time, I found Thompsons Flooring through Thumbtack, and I am so, so happy I did. In addition to this, I called my mom, who works with a ton of contractors through her job, and she told us the price they were giving us was right and very fair. I just feel so relieved that there are still people out there who take care of their customers, even when their customers don't know a lot about their area of expertise and could be taken advantage of. In summary, I have nothing to say except that I would never use anyone else for flooring but Thompson. In fact, when we move to Missouri, I wish I could get them to come out there for any of our flooring needs! It has been a total honor working with them--far more than I could put in even this very long review I wrote. Thank you, Thompson flooring, and I hope your company is greatly blessed for how you treat your customers. Tarah and Ben League"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.
