Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

Contact several gate repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your gate.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

My experience with Femar Fence was absolutely positive - Ernesto was always extremely diligent and made sure to follow through on everything I asked. And the fence came out terrific! That’s the quick review. Here are the details if you’re interested to hear more about what an absolutely great job Ernesto did to build my fence. I first began searching for a contractor to put up a fence for my new home in October. Ernesto from Femar Fence contacted me soon after I began searching on Thumbtack. He came out and took measurements and provided me with a quote that was better than two other companies I had looked into. He even agreed to cut and clear out the bushes and small shrubs that were in the way of where the fence needed to go, which another company had said they would not take care of and that I would have to pay extra and hire someone else to do. It took about three months for all of the deed and permit paperwork to go through, but Ernesto maintained contact very politely, checking in regularly and remaining extremely patient even though we had to wait for so many months to actually start the project. I was initially a little bit worried because there was a review or two that claimed Ernesto did not follow through on an appointment and another that said he was difficult with the customer. I need to say, seriously, that you should not pay attention to those at all. I have no idea what those people are referring to, but I think they must be talking about somebody else. I not only had no bad interaction with him like that at all, but I was incredibly impressed by how professional, punctual, detail-oriented, and competent he was. We began work on the fence on the Wednesday the week before Christmas. It was really rainy that week. Ernesto told me that the work should be done in 3-4 days, if the weather permitted. I was really worried that we would be left without a fence on our yard for a long time and we have dogs, if the rain did not let up. Even though our land is on quite a bit of a grade and can get extremely muddy, Ernesto powered through and did as much work as possible and really worked hard to get as much done despite the rain. He even came on a Sunday morning to finish closing up the fence so that atleast we would be able to let the dogs out over the Christmas break. Unlike other contractors who would tell me a time and come much later, Ernesto always came promptly in the morning around the time that he said. He was always really respectful of the house and the space, making sure to clean up and leave everything clear and as it was. I was especially impressed with his work ethic and his attention to detail - more so than any other contractor or even people I’ve dealt with in life in general, he would take every request I made and remember. So, for example, our HOA only allows fences to be built with the ‘bad’ side facing in. I told him that and later when they were starting to build, I went out to make sure, and he was like, “Oh, yes, definitely. That is what you told me so I am making sure that we build with the good side facing out.” He really paid attention and remembered everything so that I realized I never needed to ask him anything twice. Whenever there was even the slightest shift in the plan due to a tree that was in the way or anything like that, Ernesto made sure to politely knock and ask me to ensure that it was okay because he made sure never to cut anything or do anything without talking to me about it first. For example, the posts were cut and capped at the end, so he made sure to tell me early on that this would be done last so that I would not worry about the heights of the posts. Whenever I looked out and wanted some small adjustment like an extension of the fence by a few feet to close a gap to the neighbors’ fence or beams cut a bit shorter, he would never give me a hard time but would smile and gladly adjust as I asked. He never made me feel bad about asking about anything. Not once did he demand to make the cost of the job higher, and he really gave me a great price. We initially asked about wooden caps for the posts instead of the black plastic ones, but they are much more expensive, so we decided to keep the black plastic ones. However, remembering that this was what we had originally wanted, Ernesto even went and got really nice looking wooden caps for the gate so that they would look nicer at the entryway for our backyard. They also removed all of the old fencing that was previously there, and disposed of it all as well. Once the posts were all up, he worked super quickly and got the fencing up within a day. As I said, the experience I had with Femar Fence was only positive. Ernesto was always extremely pleasant to deal with. He was kind, respectful, and on-point. The fence looks terrific. Despite the grade of our land, the fence is completely level all the way around, and you can see that it was done with a professional hand.

Emperor Fence is awesome! I knew nothing about the company just happen to connect here on Thumbtack. After several estimates to replace an existing fence they offered the best price to complete the job. Reynaldo was very professional, punctual and consistently kept me abreast of the progress and any other details I needed to weigh in on. I’ve experienced many contractors saying one thing and doing something different ie., not showing up at the agreed upon time, taking a long time to follow-up with me etc. Definitely not my experience with Emperor. I will certainly use them again!

Keith quickly responded to my inquiry and arrived in time. He provided me with several options and was able to make the repair on the same day. I am very satisfied with the finished product. I would definitely call him again if the need should arise for further fencing repairs, and would gladly recommend him to others in need of quality work.

I told Alex I needed the corner of my fence to be secured. He offered to install a new post and remove the old post. When he stated he completed the job, he shared he could not remove the old post without removing the fence panel and did not consult with me prior to making a decision to leave the rotted old wood attached to the newly installed post. I asked how is the new post secure and he stated there were multiple 4 inch nails securing it together. When I was able to analyze the job in the daylight, trash from the job was still on my backyard, nails were sticking out that needed to be sawed off and there was only 1 nail securing my now chipped, old post to the brand new post. I told Alex I’ll need him to remove the old post as it looks extremely tacky and I’ll cover the cost of a new panel to attach to the new post. He then stated that would be an additional $150 and “I know what I’m doing that’s why you hired a pro to make the job… You got what you paid for”.

Beware of this company. They sent one guy to do a big job that they stated would take three days. They started my job, August 9(yesterday). I asked questions about the broken pieces of wood they were using, the screw size and material being used. The guy(Rolando) was using broken pieces of boards to attach the dog ears of the fence. He was using the wrong size screws and nails(which they stated that they would only use screws). The nails were coming through the fence, which my neighbor informed me because he could see them through his side of his yard. Ivan(I’m not sure of his title) text me saying he would pick up the deposit, yesterday. He didn’t come to get it. He text last night, that he wanted to discuss the scope of the job and get the deposit. I agreed to give him the deposit and informed him that I too wanted to discuss the project because I had concerns and that I couldn’t discuss with Rolando(he didn’t speak English). Instead of following through with discussing the project this morning(August 10)and getting the deposit. This company showed up picked up the material, didn’t communicate that they wouldn’t finish the job took their equipment and materials. I had to contact them once I saw on my security camera that they showed up at six in the morning to get their things without notifying me. I took off of work so that this project could be completed. They made it about the money instead of being accountable fir their lack of professionalism and communication. I have the money. That isn’t the issue. I should have steered clear of this company when another reviewer mention that Ivan said to him that he wasn’t in Africa be that he needed to pay the money. Maybe me being an African American woman, they thought I wouldn’t pay. I’m an honest person and wouldn’t take advantage of anyone that is providing me a service. I wanted my job done right and not be shoddy job. This company left me in a bind. I took time off from work and this project has to be completed by September 1 to be compliant with my hoa. My advice—stay away from this company.
