Yehor and Daniel did an excellent job on the move. They arrived early and waited patiently until the freight elevator was available. Yehor explained the process and my options. Yehor is obviously an experienced and conscientious mover. They took their time and treated my property with care and respect. I had to change the location that I was storing my furniture and they took it in stride. They did an excellent job in making something that is very stressful (moving), a little less stressful. I look forward to using Name Your Price Movers for my next move! Jenine

Lewis Piano Movers moved my Boston with no hiccups. In the past, I have had 1 piano dropped, and this one scratched badly. Lewis Piano Movers were able to accommodate the short notice. They also stood by their quote. I sent pictures and was upfront about all the steps, and they acknowledged the price and it was final. I was thrilled with the professionalism and the move itself. The men worked very hard, and took EVERY precaution to ensure nothing, not even the concrete steps, got damaged! I highly recommend this company, all the way to the office staff who answered all my questions. Thank you so very much for taking care of the most valuable thing I own, financially and sentimentally.

If you are moving Long Distant this is the company to hire! A fantastic moving experience all around! This was an out of state move and was handled superbly. We had hired another (WELL KNOWN COMPANY) that failed us on all aspects. Great Nation Moving they came in and did what professional movers are supposed to do on an FULL-SERVICE MOVE. Pickup/Packing on a Friday/Saturday and delivered over 1000 miles away on Tuesday Morning. Service is just amazing. The estimate was spot on. The movers - were the most polite, professional and hard working gentlemen I could've hoped for. Eric and his crew arrived on day one and packed/ Day two Martin his crew arrived to pack and load and we had a total of 8 crew. Ivan arrived with the 18-wheeler and everyone worked as a team. And, I can't forget Rose! She hands down carried the load of ALL the issue and never once complained. She was a straight shooter who earned not only my respect but the respect of our entire company who will use this company again. She called well in advance to remind me of EVERY moving detail and called the morning of - with a chipper wake up call to let me know when to expect the crews. Thank you, to Mimi who handled the Corp billing. I HIGHLY recommend this company! They made this move so much easier for me. Thank you!! They deserve more than 5 stars!

Tim was amazing, traffic was horrible so he called me 40 mins out to let me know he could be a bit late. I knew he was telling the truth because my movers called to say the same thing. When he got to my place he had all the tools needed and jumped right in. He also played the most amazing music, so it helped things go by more quickly. He hung my large mirror, several pictures, and helped my boyfriend assemble the furniture. Also, his prices for the service couldn't be beat. What I loved most is that he didn't sit around he worked straight through. I'm going to hire him again in a few weeks to hang a few other things. Can't way enough about how amazing it all was. If you need some help hire him.

The movers were amazing! Very sweet, super helpful and accommodating. They were about an hour late but updated me on their status along the way and worked quickly once they arrived to make up for lost time. All my possessions were handled with care and they even helped me set up my bed frame even though they didn't have to.

You cannot compare these people to any mover. The others were clumsy and broke two of my best artifacts. However, the movers from Pick Up Movers maintained lots of care and diligence. The result is that there was no damage and also there weren’t any hidden or extra charges. I am quite content with their moving services and will definitely hire them again.

My two movers showed up and gave 100% the entire time they were there! Would definitely recommend this company to my friends. The only negative I have is that on Thumbtack and my responses the price states $89 and yet when I went to website is say $99. When I asked about it, I was told that the price they quoted was wrong and they still charged me the $99. They should either change the price on here or honor the price they advertised.

My two movers were Dewayne and Antoine! They showed up on time and OMG! Very professional and quick. I offered water because those guys really worked hard and steady. When they arrived to my house, I gave them a walk through and told them what all needed to be moved and they just got right to it! I will hire them again. I promise you can’t go wrong. Just be sure you give them the accurate size and info for the job you need done. I probably could have used one more mover to have them finish up in 2 hours instead of 3, but I’m sure it would have cost me more money to have 3 movers! Anyway, I’m super satisfied!!!! THANK YOU DEWAYNE AND ANTOINE ❤️

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
