Ok. I had an appointment between 4 and 6 but he called me to let me know he an opening in his schedule so he came around 2 o'clock. He arrived in a regular SUV which I really appreciated it. I was anxious that there would be a big bed bug logo or something. He eased all of my worries, listened to my rants of these darn bed bugs, reassured me that anyone and everyone is getting them. He was very professional and helpful. His wife , who sets up the appointments, was very kind and understanding. I am a worrier and they eased my worries . He also told me what to look out for and when to schedule the follow up. And he definitely knew his busness. I'd recommend him. Lets hope the bedbugs dont return

Adam is very professional, friendly and has the best price I could find throughout an extensive search. Most importantly he got the job done. No more bed bugs! He had to return to my house more than once (which is perfectly normal) and each time he was always able to work around my admittedly difficult schedule. Even after he got his money, I never felt like I was a nuisance or an afterthought. He put me, as the customer, first. I'd recommend him to anyone with a bed bug problem.

Let me start by saying that I am one of the pickiest, most difficult, most bug paranoid clients around!, yet Les exceeded my highest expectations! I thought I had bed bugs (thank God Les confirmed I did not), and hadn't slept in days! Les came over the same day I called him, spent hours inspecting my home and treated only what he felt I needed to treat, vs. other companies which scare you into treating your entire home for no reason! He is beyond knowledgeable and truly ethical to the core. It's almost like he does this work to bring peace and comfort to people vs. for the money! Needless to say I slept like a baby last night!!! I will be having Les come back in the spring to treat the outside of my home as well as my neighbors homes who now all want to hire him. Do not think twice, do not even consider calling anyone else, there is no one better for the job! Thank you Les for your extraordinary service!

Anne Arundel Pest Management came in to treat bed bugs, and from the inspection through the first treatment, proved to be responsive, knowledgeable, reliable and thorough. They understood the issue and provided clear and thorough communication about how they would treat it, what I could expect and their follow up and warranty. I felt comfortable in their hands.

He came for a free inspection of my car. He gave it a good once over and determined that I didn't have bed bugs and wouldn't need his service. He was on time, professional and answered all my questions. I'm glad I didn't need his services but I would have hired him if need be.

This is a compliment to Chris for what he didn't do. I thought I was getting a baby roach infestation, but it turned out to be some sort of bug (forget the name) that he said feeds off trees and will disappear in a few days. He said that there were no problems, they would go away on his own, and while he could apply a treatment for the few existing bugs (haven't seen a lot, but was still annoying), it wouldn't stop others so he would recommend just having the patience to have this pass. He also gave advice on what I should ask the condo association to do so that this is minimized for next year. I was blown away with his honesty and that he considered this a free inspection, so no charge. If I do need an exterminator, or are asked to recommend one in the future, I'm going to use Chris.

Demetrius has been a great help to my family in Washington, DC. First of all, whenever we called he either came that evening or early the next day. I know he was busy and he made a concerted effort to assist us quickly. Second, his professionalism is outstanding. He knows the area well and can pinpoint what rodents or bug issues are immediately. Third, he comes back to make sure the issues are resolved and if they aren't he works hard to complete the job in an unbelievably timely manner. Fourth, he is a lovely man, kind and thoughtful. I cannot recommend Demetrius enough. We are glad we found him and have recommended him without reservations to our entire block.

We had to call Regional after another company couldn't get rid of my bud bugs! We ended up spending so much money with the first company after they came out on three different instances and the bugs still weren't gone! Regional came out as scheduled, had their bed bug dog run through our home to pinpoint problem areas that weren't treated before, and then used their heat chamber. After one treatment we were finally bed bug free! The dog even came back a week after the treatment to confirm we were free of the bugs for good! Regional was prompt, extremely knowledgeable, and very professional. I wish we had gone with them to begin with and highly recommend them!

These guys were great. Set an apt for a call and they answered right on time, set an inspection for that same day and did job first thing the next morning as I stayed in my home. The best part, I felt no harm with anything they used. Thank you Eco Bed Bug.

Kevin was the best, in every way. I talked to many others, including a big pest control company, but he was 10 times better all around. He always got back to me fast with a text or call. He gave me advice on using home techniques - like a "heater box" which we got from Walmart, not expensive, to heat items including pretty big items in it to kill bugs and eggs. He did an amazingly thorough job of inspecting the day he came for an assessment - looking carefully at every single bed. On the day, he was on time and steam-cleaned the key areas and put down two kinds of eco friendly spray treatment, and we have a 90 day guarantee and he can come reinspect during that time, to update us on the process. He is even going to have a bed-bug smelling dog - amazing! It was a huge relief to get this problem solved. Highly recommended. You will realize once you meet him that he's trustworthy and the best.

I saw some mice and I started to get bug bites.I had heard good things about Defend Pest Control so I made an appointment. Mr.Edward Henehan, the owner of the company, came out promptly, and treated for mice. His manner was friendly and professional. However, even though the mice were gone, I still kept being bitten. I went to Johns Hopkins Dermatology clinic, and they said they were bedbug bites. I called Defend Pest Control to treat for bedbugs. I knew bedbugs were extremely expensive to eliminate. When Defend arrived, Mr.Henehan did not find bedbugs, but instead, mouse mites. He could have treated for bedbugs, which would have cost a lot. But he was honest and honorable, and sprayed for mites, which cost much less. He sprayed the house and got rid of the mites and treated for mice. Happy to say I am now pest free. Defend's the best. Thanks again, Bob Hlavac

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you get bed bugs and how do you get rid of them?

The increase in bed bug infestations in the U.S. is a result of increased travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices, explains the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It’s easy to mistake bed bugs for carpet beetles or similar-looking bugs, so infestations are often not noticed when they first occur. Prevention tips include keeping areas free of clutter, regularly washing sheets and mattress covers in hot water (and don’t forget to wash the laundry bag, too), and vacuuming regularly and safely disposing of the sealed vacuum bag. Not everyone has reactions to bed bug bites, which also may be mistaken for the bites of other pests such as mosquitoes, so timely bed bug extermination depends on identification of bed bug activity. If you notice physical signs of an infestation, contact a bed bug extermination professional as soon as possible to learn about chemical and non-chemical (such as heat) treatment options. An integrated pest management plan may incorporate one or more methods.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.

Can you see a bed bug?

Bed bugs are visible to the naked eye, but depending on where they are in their life cycle they can be hard to see. Adult bed bugs are the easiest to spot. According to the EPA, they are roughly the size of an apple seed and the height of a credit card. Adults are flat and oval-shaped, have six legs, and are rusty red in color. Bed bug larvae, also referred to as nymphs, are white-yellow or translucent in color and are much harder to spot due to their small size. The nymphs go through five stages of life, shedding an exoskeleton at each stage. Throughout these stages the nymphs grow in size from approximately 1.5 millimeters to approximately 4.5 millimeters. Bed bug eggs can be the most challenging to see as they are roughly 1 millimeter — about the size of a pinhead — and are white or clear. Bed bugs tend to be more active at night, as this is when they feed.

How do you get bed bugs?

Bed bugs can happen to anybody and there typically more than 200,000 cases in the U.S. per year. They are sneaky little pests that hitchhike into your home in a variety of ways. Getting a bed bug infestation is not a reflection on how clean a home is; bed bugs can infiltrate the cleanest of places — although their presence is easier to detect and eliminate in clutter-free spaces. Here are some tips from the EPA to prevent bed bugs from entering and taking up residence in your home:

        • Carefully inspect secondhand furniture, beds, or couches for any signs of bed bug infestation before bringing them home.
        • Use a protective cover (encasement) over mattresses and box springs to prevent bed bugs from hiding in them. Select an encasement in a light color to make bed bug spotting easier. Also choose one of a strong material that won’t tear, and check it often for holes.
        • Keep your home clutter-free to eliminate bed bug hiding spots.
        • Vacuum your home regularly and dispose of sealed vacuum bags carefully.
        • Shared laundry facilities can lead to bed bug exposure in both directions. Transport laundry in plastic bags (if you have an active infestation, use a new bag for the journey home). Remove laundry from the dryer directly into the bag and fold it at home. Use high heat to kill any potential bed bugs.
        • The EPA suggests that if you live in a multi-family home, isolate your unit by:
          • Installing door sweeps on the bottom of doors to discourage movement into hallways.
          • Sealing cracks and crevices around baseboards, light sockets, etc., to discourage movement through wall voids.

How long does a bed bug treatment last?

Bed bug extermination can last forever as long as the treatment killed all the bed bugs (and their eggs) and if new bed bugs are not transported into the location. Factors that can affect the outcome are how severe the infestation is and whether all bed bug sources were properly identified and treated. When working with a pest control professional, the EPA recommends you check and call references; ask if they offer both chemical and non-chemical treatment options, if they recommend both encasements and interceptors, and if they offer two or more service visits and follow-up. Bed bugs are tiny (adults are roughly the size of an apple seed) and can hide anywhere a credit card can slide into. They squeeze into cracks in walls, behind electrical outlet sockets, in bedding, and in other dark places. Learn how to prepare your home for a bed bug treatment for the best outcomes. Michigan State University shares some examples of possible reasons that a bed bug extermination is not 100 percent effective:

        • Not all sources (aka hiding places) of the bed bugs were identified during initial inspection.
        • Not all sources of bed bugs were treated.
        • The insecticides used were not effective or, in the case of heat treatment, there was insufficient contact time.
        • Infested items such as bedding or other materials were reintroduced into a cleaned area.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
