NYPM arrived on time with friendly and professional movers. While I would have preferred to know extra costs ahead of time, they went through all costs in detail when surveying the move in the morning and provided suggestions for reducing costs where applicable. They were very careful with our belongings, causing no damage to boxes or furniture. I would definitely use them again for local moves.

This is my first time using Baku Moving. The movers were phenomenal. They were not only fast and efficient but also treated my stuff like their own. They did the move from a 3rd floor apartment to a 2-story house in VA. I highly recommend this company and would definitely use them again.

I was thrilled that Lewis Piano Movers were able to move my piano within a few days notice for a good price, and they were prompt, professional, and very nice to deal with on top of that. I highly recommend them.

I was very impressed by how quick and professional the movers were, but they arrived about 2 hours late. From my understanding, it just sounds like they were overbooked and the last job ran over, but it did put me a lot behind schedule. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience, and my only other issue was that certain fees came up after we discussed the initial "overall" quote - fee for 3 flights of stairs, the fee for using a credit card, etc.

I had a great experience. The movers called me to coordinate, were very nice and fun to talk with, and even went the extra step of disassembling and reassembling my table when it wouldn't fit in the door. Thanks, guys!

Great service, exactly what they said price would be. No charge for tape or Shrink wrap, pads are complimentary. They disassemble and reassembled and placed everything where it needed to be. When I called checking on other movers some of them did not include truck or or fuel services. This company did it all for a better price and were professionals. Highy recommend.

Overall good experience with movers. They were an hour late, but we had extremely bad rain that day, and with traffic. A little planning could have gone a long way. However, our organization was very pleased with their services. We would contract again. They were also very helpful with obtaining documents needed prior to the move.

I hired Tim to help me move a 1 BR apartment. At first I was hesitant, since his quote mentioned "up to 3 people" - but he ended up showing up by himself. Apparently, the people he usually works with cancelled him last minute. However, this was no trouble for Tim, as he handled all my belongings with great care (wrapped them with quilts and shrink wrap), and had no trouble loading everything into the truck. As our time window to move was shrinking, Tim realized he needed another set of hands, so he went and hired someone to help him at his expense while respecting the lowered quote he had given me (since the other movers didn't show up). I really appreciated Tim's integrity and how careful he was with my stuff - I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again, as I know he'll do a great job, no matter the circumstances.

Simple move out of a apartment complex to a new dwelling less than ten miles away. Movers were motivated and ready to work. They wrapped furniture and glass securely and overall did a fantastic job. Due to a scheduling conflict on PMS services part, I am unable to give this group a 5 Star review. In the end, the wrong date was given to the drivers and my contracted move date resulted in a no show, no response to calls for several hours deconflict. However, owner went the extra distance to make up the move at my convenience and offered a discount on the service.

We could not have asked for better movers. Darrel and Michael were on time, fast, efficient, professional, and courteous! We had several questions prior to the move and Darrel responded quickly to each one. These guys really knew what they were doing and had our truck packed neatly in no time with room to spare. We would absolutely recommend them to anyone in the area!

We used Relocation Solutions, Inc. for our office move, and they were absolutely amazing! From the first site visit to working around problems leading up to the move, to dealing with people, and to mastering difficult situations (like blocked loading ramps) - Greg and his team provided stellar service! Estimates were spot-on, planning and communications were superb, and the team's invaluable can-do attitude turned this move into a great experience (and who can say that about a move!?). The moving crew was experienced, professional, courteous, careful, efficient, and FAST. Relocation Solutions left everybody impressed, including our landlord. We are very happy to have chosen Relocation Solutions. Even if you can find cheaper movers: a good mover makes all the difference- and that is what you get with Greg. Five stars for Relocation Solutions.

I was in need of an urgent move and had no option but to look for a company which would assist me with swift and immediate packing, at that point of time my friend recommended Pick Up Movers and that turned out to be the best decision I have ever made in terms of my packing need. They completely proved their metal, there was so much stuff that needed urgent movement and the task was really difficult. People who were working needed to be professionals; there was a lot of expensive stuff that needed careful handling. Lots of expensive crockery and things that were just very dear to us and we wanted that transported without any damage. To be honest I had never heard of Pick Up Movers and I thought twice before I finalised them. On my friend’s compulsion we did go ahead and just got A Class service. There was no damage, no price change and no deviation at all from the terms to what the company and we had agreed. Perfect shift at the end and that’s about it.

My two movers showed up and gave 100% the entire time they were there! Would definitely recommend this company to my friends. The only negative I have is that on Thumbtack and my responses the price states $89 and yet when I went to website is say $99. When I asked about it, I was told that the price they quoted was wrong and they still charged me the $99. They should either change the price on here or honor the price they advertised.

My two movers were Dewayne and Antoine! They showed up on time and OMG! Very professional and quick. I offered water because those guys really worked hard and steady. When they arrived to my house, I gave them a walk through and told them what all needed to be moved and they just got right to it! I will hire them again. I promise you can’t go wrong. Just be sure you give them the accurate size and info for the job you need done. I probably could have used one more mover to have them finish up in 2 hours instead of 3, but I’m sure it would have cost me more money to have 3 movers! Anyway, I’m super satisfied!!!! THANK YOU DEWAYNE AND ANTOINE ❤️

1 bedroom apartment from DC to Bethesda 4.5 hours (Mostly my fault). They arrived on time were friendly and personable.I was a bit skeptical if they were able to move everything, they moved everything without a hitch. There were three guys Jacob, C, and Godfrey they were funny and really nice. I didn't lift a finger. Able to fit all my furniture in the room after I thought it wouldnt fit. Proved both my aunt and myself terribly wrong lol. I've never moved before and I have heard nightmares about moving and moving companies. This was perfect smooth and just plain great. If I ever have to move again (hopefully not for another two years) I would 100% use Jacob again. I recommend 3000%! (Even my aunt was impressed....thats very hard to do by the way)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
