Hands down, the best experience with a moving company that I have had the pleasure of dealing with. I've tried a few of the companies (including doing it myself) in the past when moving between apartments, but Your Friends with a Truck have blown away any expectations or preconceived notions that I had about moving companies. They were the lowest quote I got, but still worked harder than anyone else I've used in the past. I would (and have!) recommended them to anyone that will be moving in the near future.

Best moving experience we've ever had! NYP movers were professional, efficient, and reasonably priced ($99/hr for 3 movers, truck, and furniture pads). Ali, Kevin and Ronaldo were very careful not to damage any of our furniture or walls. They wrapped all wood surfaces to minimize scratches. And they were even able to move our massive couch which other moving companies have struggled and even refused to move.I'd highly recommend using NYP movers for your next more!

Baku Moving was the most professional of all the moving companies we contacted for our move from DC to TN. Our timelines were tight, but they did everything they could to make us happy. Samir especially is a pleasure to work with. We will definitely refer them to our family & friends. 5 stars for the impeccable customer service.

My family and I couldn't have asked for a better experience than what Zebna Movers provided. From the initial in-home estimate to ultimate delivery of our household goods, the entire Zebna team provided top-notch service at an extremely competitive price. El Ibra, our moving liaison, was prompt, respectful, and truly did everything in his power to ensure that our last-minute move from Virginia to Florida went absolutely seamless. The actual moving team showed up ahead of schedule and worked tirelessly and efficiently to pack our entire 4+ bedroom home in a matter of hours. Since I was forced to remain in Virginia and finalize the sale of our house, the moving crew then traveled to Florida and went out of their way to make absolutely certain my pregnant wife had everything she needed; the team was comprised of genuinely considerate people. We honestly could not have accomplished this move without Zebna's exquisite service. Having requested quotes and meeting representatives from a number of moving companies, I am absolutely certain we made the right choice in selecting Zebna Movers.

The men were early to the job and did the work in half the time I expected. When my couch wouldn't fit through the doorway, they were quick thinking and managed to successfully remove and reassemble the legs. They charged me a fraction of the price that any other moving company quoted. I'd recommend them to anyone.

We recently hired Great Nation to move our daughter, son-in-law and our 8-month grand-daughter from Maryland to North Carolina. I have used other moving companies over the last 40 years to move our family so I was looking for a local mover. Great Nation Moving and Storage is by far the best moving company that I have ever experienced. Their men are good and they are very polite and customer service oriented. My daughter had her floors refinished so they took extra good care of protecting them. The movers laid padded materials to the floors and blankets over all railings to keep everything protected. I would HIGHLY recommend hiring Great Nation Moving for all of my relocation needs. They packed the 3 bedroom house and moved everything to the new house. They did it all! Never witnessed such a professional moving company. Service, budget, zero damage and NO hidden fees. Great Nation Moving and Storage IS the BEST!!!

Fred and his team were amazing. After hearing horror stories about moving companies, I was hesitant to hire someone, but SkyRide put my fears to rest and exceeded all of my expectations. They were professional, courteous, friendly, and efficient. My things were treated with care and arrived safely. We had a mix-up regarding the date of the move, but Fred was very responsive and fixed everything, which really helped in the midst of moving stress. I would highly recommend SkyRide!

I just moved this past weekend from NW to NE DC, and I would definitely recommend them. While they were late, it wasn't too much of a problem for me because my schedule was flexible. Also, they were very responsive to my calls/messages. Other then that the process was very smooth and the team handled obstacles (narrow stairs, furniture disassembly, small freight elevator) very well and carefully handled my furniture. Also I had more stuff than anticipated and they didn't charge me more for it or complain at all. Most importantly the price was so reasonable compared with what other moving companies were quoting with little to no compromise on service. Thanks Terrence!

I hired OSSL Moving for a move from DC to Boston a couple of months ago. It was the best moving experience I've ever had. At every step of the process, Jacob was very responsive, helpful, friendly, and accommodating. I asked if he would consider picking up in DC on one day, and delivering to Boston the following day. The other moving companies I spoke to could not offer this arrangement or would charge a significant fee. Jacob accepted without hesitation and did not charge me extra. The crew on move-out day were very kind and careful with my items. The crew who assisted on move-in day were also very nice and careful. Jacob even hired a few local movers who are familiar with the uniqueness of Boston apartments (narrow staircases, no elevators, etc), and did not charge extra for the additional labor. But what impressed me most about Jacob was his willingness to help when I ran into a major issue with some of my furniture fitting up the stairs. It was a Sunday afternoon in the middle of a snowy January and I had no idea what to do. Jacob suggested I look into the option of a storage unit. After several phone calls, and with Jacob patiently waiting, I was able to find a unit on the other side of town. Worried about how I would transport the furniture to the storage unit, Jacob graciously offered to move my stuff without additional charge (though I insisted on paying him extra for this service). When we got to the storage unit, I was convinced the furniture wouldn't fit in the unit that I had rented. By some miracle, Jacob and his team managed to find a way to make it all fit. I will always be grateful to Jacob and his team for making this move as seamless as possible. I would recommend Jacob to anyone, without reservation, and with great enthusiasm. I look forward to hiring him again in the future.

When it was time for me to move, I researched, researched and then researched some more. I talked to many companies. But there was something special about the gentleman on the phone from Pick Up Movers that I decided to hire them. They were absolutely awesome. They packed with military precision. They were out of my house before anyone even knew that I was moving out. I am so very grateful to them for delivering on time and saving the trouble of having to beg them to give me my things back. There are so many inefficient moving companies and fortunately, I got the best one.

I had an excellent experience when it came to both the coordination and execution of my long distance move with M&M Moving and Hauling. They were the first company to provide me with a quote, and were able to complete the job for a very reasonable price. My father, who oversaw the pickup location side of the move, even commented on how efficient they were at loading everything. Even if you are moving into a walk-up with narrow stairwells, no need to fear— Marvin and his assistant dealt with it spectacularly. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire them again.

Pack-N-Move charged a flat rate which prevents unnecessary disputes from happening. Even though we did our packing poorly with lots of open boxes, PNM didn't charge any extra cost and finished the job promptly. It's always the customer's responsibility to pack the boxes appropriately so it won't turn out to be a bad surprise of increasing the cost. PNM explained how moving company do their job and finished the process smoothly. I'd like to thank them for their professionalism.

Our two helpers were great for moving our large items upstairs. They were quick, made a good team, and were very friendly. My only issue was that they weren’t as familiar with putting the furniture back together, and my husband had to do most of the work on that front. Would definitely hire again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
