The two men helping me move (Ishmael and Javier) were outstanding. They arrived early and got straight to work. They were friendly, but not overly so. They asked questions to better understand my needs. They wrapped my dressers and shelves in plastic wrap, and unwrapped it at the new place. Without me even asking, they re-built my bed right upon arriving at the new place. They put al the boxes in the right rooms based on the tape and markings I had put on each box. The owner, David called multiple times to check on the move and their progress. Even though we were running behind, which surely affected the next customer, David was kind, calm, and understanding of my needs. I will absolutely be recommending these movers to my friends and anyone who has an upcoming move scheduled. Thanks!!

The company was amazing! Very professional on the phone, from the first call to the last call. The truck was on time, all three movers were courteous and polite. They worked hard for 10 hours and never took breaks. The best quality of this company is FLEXIBILITY. They changed the date of the move with less than 24 hours of warning. They were able to provide all the extra services on-site with a call to the office and were upfront about the prices within minutes. The strength of this company is the highly trained movers. I recommend them with no reservations!

After my recent move with Baku Moving I had to recommend them. The movers were so good that they made my move look like an ordinary one. But I knew that it won’t be an easy task to accomplish. Movers showed their great commitment and great presence of mind during the move. They were focused, confident, innovative and brave enough to face the odds, fast, accurate and very polite. The way they executed the task and the way they took care of my stuff deserves to be appreciated. I am also happy with the price of the move. I recommend this company to everyone for any kind of moves .

I found Smart Moving on Thumbtack. Their response times are quick and they were easy to work with from beginning to end! None of my furniture or belongings went missing or were damaged during the move, save for a cosmetic scratch on a vanity that can be easily rubbed/polished out. The movers were kind and never stopped working! They were upfront about things (like wrapping and packing) that would eat up more time so there were no surprises about the amount of time and money the move would take. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that it may be best to pay in cash. Using a card will require a 3% service fee... It's a negligent amount, but it is good to know beforehand! No personal checks either. Thank you, Sam, Smart Moving, and the awesome movers!

FANTASTIC! WOULD USE AGAIN AND AGAIN. (#&$)#! Bekins is the worst. My Bekins A-1 movers, 1511 Farm Creek Dr, VA 703-491-1512 were absolute merd! I was told they couldn't get my couch to the 2nd floor due to it being too large. I called Charlies and they were to move it up and over the 2nd floor balcony. They immediate got it up the stairs with only two of them and no scratches! Very professional. I wish I used them instead of Bekins!!!!!

OMG! I was in a jam because Green Planet Movers (Groupon) didn't return my calls and didn't show up for the move. But at the very last minute, Ali responded to my Thumbtack Mover Project in seconds. Amazing. Fast. Friendly. And Honest Skyride swooped in that same day in a few hours and saved the day! And they charged me less than those other guys. I want to say thanks, I really appreciated what y'all did for me.

Joseph was a TRUE GENTLEMAN. He and his associate went up and beyond the call of duty. When we ran into difficulties with the leasing office - ultimately resulting in canceling the move for the day (after their truck was packed), they unloaded our belongings BACK into the old place. We rescheduled for 2 days later - more difficulties. But, through it all, they were both pleasant and extremely easy to work with. I would recommend them to anyone who needs fast, courteous and reliable movers. Despite everything going on, they had us all laughing and making the best of a horrid situation. Thank you to Joseph and your associate! You guys are THE BEST!

Stavo was great to work with! My original TV Mounter cancelled on me the day-of my appointment, and Stavo arrived within a couple of hours. The original TV Mounter recommended a mount that was not compatible with my TV, and Stavo helped me figure out which new mount on Amazon would best fit. He then came back a few days later to install it for me, and came back two days later to lower it after I determined our original placement was too high. He was very responsive and communicative, and I would definitely hire him again!

I highly recommend these professionals. They essentially moved 2 pianos for me in 1 day, in the cold! The 2 movers arrived within their window of time to pick up the first piano from my house and dropped it off at a school. After that, they picked up another piano from a music store and moved it to my place. Very impressive Move Logic.

We were in need of an urgent move and were left stranded by a company which we had made previous arrangements to move with. I am a married man with kids and I needed to report to my new job posting in New York on time. Although my wife is very capable it would not be possible for her to manage such a monstrous task alone and in my absence with three boys. I was actually pulling out my hair, just then I saw a van of Pick Up Movers pass before my eyes. I was quick to take note of their number from the moving van. That was it and Pick Up Movers were at our rescue. We made arrangements for them to shift us the very next day and they agreed to it. The packers drove in on time and got to work immediately. They packed and loaded all the stuff and we were done by evening all the packing was finished. The truck was to reach our new house in Buffalo after 5 days which is exactly when it arrived and I was surprised to see my belongings intact with zero damage. I am so happy that we managed to pull everything just in the nick of time and I really rejoice having relocated using their services and would suggest everyone to try them out.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
