In addition, to the household debris located in my garage I had EBRR Logistics/Renovations disassemble and get rid of my camper trailer that was 40' long. All this was done in one day and couldn't be more impressed.

John did a fabulous job installing garage racks for us. He was on time, professional, and great to work with. He ended up charging me less than he originally quoted, which was a nice surprise! He was very thorough and I would definitely hire him again for other projects.

Rosa came in with a 4 person crew and they did sn amazing, whirlwind job--doing an excellent deep cleaning of a 5 bedroom house in under two hours. They also came on really short notice, which was great! A terrific experience all the way around.

We actually decided not to use American's service for this time around, but I want to give them a good review for their time and effort in explaining contracting to us as first-timers remodeling a basement. Mike and Richard were very knowledgeable and accommodating. I really like Mike's vision of what he could do with the basements, the options he provided, and his suggestions. It was a tough choice and while someone else fit us better in the end, I still recommend their service and may use them myself one day. I know this wont be my last project!

We hired Bathgate Construction to hardscape our 600 sq. ft. backyard for rat abatement and aesthetics. Brad communicated in a timely manner and the price was fair for the job quoted. We saw him several times during the project, as he came to check in on his team. He recommended a slight modification to add a step into our garage area, which turned out nicely. We live in the city, with very tight space, so the job took a bit more manual labor since they couldn't bring in any real heavy equipment to get the job done faster. One minor irritation is that we were quoted 5 - 6 business days to have the job completed, but in actuality, it took about 12 business days (and a Saturday) for completion. Regardless, his team did a beautiful job on the brick laying, creating a herringbone pattern with soldier border. Overall, I would definitely hire them again and recommend them for their work.

Ted led the team that remodeled my kitchen to include installing cabinets, painting, drywall repair, replacement of an outside door, and installing a tile floor. Also, they added a deck to my house. The work done really was excellent and I'm very satisfied with both projects. Ted always let me know what time the team would arrive at my house and they were prompt and courteous. He was upfront regarding costs and kept in constant communication with me. He's basically a jack-of-all trades and I highly recommend Ted.

I called these duo of father and son for my clinic set up, they came in to estimate the job as timely as possible ,suggested ways I could save money , did a neat job as that was important to us ( albeit a difficult job as the building was way too old )and were professional through and through, no regrets here.

Ken & his team were very helpful in terms of designing and building our patio, retaining wall & deck. We were in a rush to get it completed and they managed to exceed the deadline by finishing in 2 days and with 2 days to spare. Professional, courteous, and excellent work. We plan to have Ken and his team back for more work. Definitely have our recommendation!!!

We highly recommend Eric Plomchok and Second Nature Home Improvements. We engaged Eric to take down a wall between our kitchen and dining room, remove cabinetry and a desk and to install 11 sets of cabinets, cabinetry and ceiling lighting, shelving and wallpaper. The result is amazing. The finished ceiling blends so well that it is impossible to see where a wall might have been. Eric’s care and attention to detail in all of the work he completed is extraordinary. No seams are visible in the wallpaper, the numerous relocated electrical switches and outlets are in perfect places and no nail marks are visible in the cabinetry. The last bit of work left of the original job is matching the wooden floor boards where the wall once stood and we trust that, given his track record so far, this will be completed soon and will look terrific. Eric is professional, friendly and always cleaned up at the end of the day. He was also very patient when changes were made to original plans. We came to think of him as family and to trust him in the house when no one was home. We were so impressed with his work and so reluctant to see him go that we kept finding other things since he was so proficient in so many areas! In addition to the original work he was engaged to do, we also engaged him to help install new electronic temperature controls and a keypad system for our garage doors. Unfortunately, now that Eric has completed the extension of the kitchen in such exemplary fashion, the rest of the kitchen looks old and tired and needs updating! As a result, we have asked Eric to provide estimates for the kitchen update as well as a remodel for our master bathroom. Again, we highly recommend Eric and Second Nature Home Improvements! The contractor did a great job he definitely knows about concrete. I am happy with my foundation we are now building a three story addition. The only downside was it took longer than I expected but I know that the foundation will not crack according to the inspector

My Wife and I recently went through an extensive renovation of our home which entailed moving our kitchen to a different location, expanding a bedroom, remodeling two bathrooms, adding a bedroom and an office, and adding a den. Everyone on Scott'S team was amazing! They worked within our budget, gave us numerous options, and they were extremely accommodating considering we lived in our house during the renovation. Everyone was very professional and knowledgeable. We had estimates from other companies but Winthorpe Design & Build stood out because they really thought outside the box to make our wish list a reality. We love the ideas Krag came up with. We knew we were in good hands when we signed our contract. We highly recommend Winthorpe to others looking to complete a renovation. You won't be disappointed!

Ocie was fantastic! I sent a request at 7AM on Thumbtack for estimates and he was in my driveway a few short hours later. I am so pleased with the job. He truly went above and beyond, clearing the alleyway between the main road and my garage. He was the best price of everyone who contacted me and I will definitely be having him come again next time it snows. Thanks again!

We moved in 2000. Our house was built in the late 50's early 60's. Seaboard Contractors LLC came in and they installed a new asphalt roof, then we moved on to new windows and then new siding on the house and garage. At this point I feel like I'm in a new house.

We have been working with Bruce Builders for 10+ years. They have done numerous projects for us, including building a porch off our 2nd story master bedroom, building a 2 level deck, building a pavilion with a fireplace, pizza oven, and outdoor kitchen, creating other outdoor spaces with pavers and plants. Their are numerous things I could say about the owner, Mike (all positive), but the #1 thing would be his honesty and excellent quality of work. He is very helpful in the design process. Extremely thorough in his research of the products that he puts in to the project. And very fair with their pricing. Mike would rather not get a job than do something that he doesn't feel would be right for his clients. We have recommended Bruce Builders to friends who have also used them. It's hard to believe we have ever used anyone else. If you want a job done right then we suggest Bruce Builders.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
