Derek's Trumpet Lessons
Introduction: In addition to the standard method books and trumpet-playing fundamentals, I incorporate music theory and improvisation into my lessons. These are excellent ways to fit what's learned into a broader musical context and develop a deeper understanding of music in general. Improvising is great fun, and develops skills not ordinarily addressed in other forms of music. I also find songs the student would recognize - pop tunes, video game music, movie themes - and arrange them into a form appropriate for the student's current level.

We have had a wonderful experience with Derek. He is very knowledgeable and patient and really connects with my son during his lessons. He corrects mistakes in a positive way and is always very encouraging. My son enjoys his lessons and his trumpet skills have improved significantly.There is a very fun recital in the spring where students get to show what they've learned that year. We are so glad that we found Derek!

Derek has been teaching my 7th grader for 2 years now. My son is always excited to have lessons since Derek helps him find music he enjoys and makes his lessons interesting. I've seen tremendous improvement in his playing during their time together as well!

Derek is a great teacher. Listens to the pupil (me) and motivates. Teaches from interesting music materials. An uncanny ability to evaluate my playing issues and make solid suggestions that work quickly to improve my playing. I am 60 now and started playing in fifth grade. I feel that I have progressed more in a year with Derek than with any other teacher, private or classroom, in my life.

Derek has been an excellent trumpet instructor for my two middle-school-aged sons. Derek has taught my older son for almost two years. My boys really enjoy their weekly lessons, due to his encouragement, individualized instruction, and friendly personality. They work on technical skills (scales), but also "fun" pieces (movie theme songs). He always creates notes about what to practice each week.
We've all been very happy with Derek's lessons -- my boys have definitely improved and also kept their interest in trumpet. Based on our experience, whether your child is just getting started or has a few years of experience, Derek can help your trumpet student!
