I had TNT WINDOWS give me a quote on. My front window. And the owner and myself set up the appointment time. He came by and tore the plastic I had concealing the drafts. And told me that I didn't NEED a brand New window. That he could fix my problem on site. I was elated not to have to fork out a lump sump of ? for something I didn't NEED. I really appreciated his honesty and integrity. To gain my trust and to have his company do more work. Based on professionalism.

I had been dreading for years the process of getting new windows for the house which were sorely needed. I have had some experience with one of the large in your face constantly advertising with annoying jingles companies whose salespeople demand a three hour appointment to talk at you until you are frantic and will say yes to anything just to get rid of them. Not until then do they take measurements and give a quote. I wanted a small local business which depends on reputation and personal pride rather than full scale media advertising. I finally gathered the courage and put in a request on Thumbtack with which I have had some success. As soon as I had closed the Thumbtack window, I had an email message from Tom Bolda of Xpert Glass requesting a chance to quote the job. I took some deep breaths and called. Tom wanted to come out right away. I said it was getting on to dinner time, but he said it wouldn't take long. I said, "Not three hours?" He laughed and said, "No way." Tom arrived a short time later, and after a few pleasantries, I showed him the windows I wanted replaced, and he took measurements, did some figuring and gave me a quote which was in the ball park of what research said I should be paying for nine windows. He also told me of a company promotion for triple pane windows with an additional price so modest compared to the industry standards that I consented. We then went out to his truck and I was shown samples of the windows. Tom was so enthusiastic and confident of his product and work for which I got a lifetime transferable warranty that I signed the contract and gave a deposit. The whole visit took about forty-five minutes. Three weeks later Jasmin and Joe came with the windows. They worked diligently and professionally. These two master craftsmen had all nine windows expertly installed and the old windows carted away in less than four hours. They left a beautiful job. I did find aluminum trim snippets scattered around the outside. They are probably harmless, but I pick them up anyway when I see them. Jasmin informed me because of the energy ratings, I could apply for a Consumers Energy rebate of which I was unaware, and for which I successfully did apply. During the process of applying I did some research on the Alside Mezzo windows I bought. The Mezzo line got all brilliant reviews, but Alside triple pane windows' reviews were pretty dismal. The Mezzo triple pane windows were too recent to have been reviewed, so, hopefully, the Mezzo standard of excellence will have created a triple pane of which Alside can be proud. On the Alside website there is a hint the triple pane will better reduce noise, but research I have done says the noise reduction of double and triple panes is about the same. If triple panes are bought, it should only be because of the energy savings. So the ordeal I had long dreaded was handled as painlessly and expertly as possible. Glass Xpert was just what the therapist ordered, and I would recommend them to everyone.

Kent and his team exceeded our expectations in the process of installing replacement windows throughout the upper level of our home. The quality of their work was impeccable and when they were finished, their cleanup was very thorough. One of the windows being replaced was unusual and tricky to install, but Kent made it look easy. The finish work on the inside and outside of the home is excellent. We will call on Kent again for future projects in our home.

Every other company wanted to come quote me in a week, and my window is broken. He came the next day, cleaned up all the glass, shop vacced all the windows, cut the glass in his truck or outside, and finished the job quickly. Super nice guy, really great worksmanship. I would seriously recommend him over anyone else. Thank you so much!!!!!!!

P & G Contracting recently did a basement remodel for us. We had done a lot of research on what we wanted, and had several proposals before going with Phil and his crew. He had built our deck last summer, and re-shingled our roof after the hail storm so we knew what his quality would be. Our basement was not a simple put up some 2x4s, drywall and a paint job. It required some extra imagination to re-route some plumbing, put in a multi-level stairwell, and improved our heating and cooling. We also converted our egress window into a sturdy brick and cement exit including a bilco door. Phil is very considerate to the work site, and treats it like it is his own house. We are very pleased.

We wanted to remove a window on our living area wall to provide a space for our 60" TV. Nathan removed the window and finished it in a professional manner. He finished it inside so it was ready for paint and on the outside so it is ready for plastering. Nathan was on time, easy to work with and very honest with his quote. He went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the end result. We were very happy. Thank you Nathan. Job well done. We will be calling again for future jobs we need done around the house.

Scott and his crew are awesome. Scott is very easy to work with. He came out right away to look at our roof and was on time. He is very professional and makes the process very easy. I have never hired anyone to do a job this big and he walked me through everything with ease. The day of the install his crew was here first thing on time. They did a great job protecting all of our stuff (doubled up tarps and wood over our deck and hot tub and covered windows and doors) They worked all day and got it done in one day. The shingles look awesome. The house looks like new! They cleaned up everything and if it wasn't for the awesome looking roof you wouldn't know they were here. It is too bad Scott and his crew don't do decks cause I would hire them for other projects!

Hi! I'm Meryl Weprin, owner of Zen Windows-Detroit. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and met my husband of 42 years at Syracuse University. Graduating with a BSN in nursing, I continued to get a Master of Science in Nursing at Ohio State University. I've taught and worked in the ob-gyn field on and off over the past 40 years while having 7 beautiful children. You might say that I've juggled home, work, family, friends and volunteer activities all my life. I have been immersed in the wonderful world of Zen Windows for more than a decade, and I love being part of the Zen Windows family. You might say being part of Zen is definitely close to home, since the owner and founder of the company, Dan Wolt, is married to my daughter. For the last 15 years, I have watched and helped Dan grow his business. Along the way, I have learned every facet of properly running an amazing industry-changing company. I couldn't wait to be an owner myself, and when I felt I was ready, I opened in one of my most beloved cities, Detroit Michigan, where so many of my relatives reside. It was time to introduce them and the great city of Detroit to this revolutionary way of shopping for windows. I know how valuable your time is. Therefore, I will provide you with a quote over the phone or by e-mail, based on your schedule. I will personally walk you through the simple online process and will strive to make your experience quick and easy. You will be satisfied knowing that you are getting an award-winning energy-star-rated product with our nationally recognized installation team. I will personally make sure that you are 100% happy and satisfied with your energy efficient windows before you give me a dime.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
