Amanda & Kyle responded to my plumbing inquiry within 20 minutes, at 9pm at night. They quoted me MUCH lower than every surrounding Grand Rapids area plumber and they finished in half the projected time, so I ended up paying far less than even the original quote. On top of this they were super friendly and easy to work with. I will be calling AK for all of my future handy man needs.

Christopher unclogged the kitchen drain for me. My efforts of Drano & plunging were not successful. He accomplished the job quickly. His fee was very reasonable. He is very polite & helpful. I will hire him again when I need a plumber.

Tom was great to work with, we will certainly be bringing him back for additional work as we get it planned out. We had Tom out already as part of a basement finishing project and he was wonderful to work with and very professional. He was very clear on when the work would be completed, what times he would be on the job site and took extremely good care of my home and project like it was his own. The framing he did for the walls was a great base for the construction and everything went very smooth with the other trades who had to interact with the framing (like plumber and the shower area being exact and easy for them to fit the surround in without any concerns). We've also had Tom back to do a small start on the finishing and as I said we will have him back out once we are completely ready for the trim work to be in place. Do yourself a favor and if considering Tom hire him, he is worth the peace of mind and confidence that you will get knowing the project will be done right and with great care.

Tim replaced my 20 year old hot water tank with a new high efficiency tank and completely re-plumbed my daughters home in the past year. He was extremely prompt, performed the work you would expect from a professional and the pricing is fair. Tim is very personable, friendly, has a great attention to detail and takes little time to complete the project. He will always be the first one I call if I have a plumbing problem. In fact I have his number always ready on my cell phone. If you need a plumber call Tim. You will not be disappointed.

Matt has done a variety of jobs for my family home in Kalamazoo over the years. Finding him about six years ago has been one of the best things that's happened to us in Kalamazoo. He seems to be able to do anything, and he does it in such good spirits that we're sorry when he leaves. The variety of things he has done is huge, and he has often responded on short notice, and been willing to at least come and look at something ASAP. He fixed a problem with our bathtub faucet which had been botched by two professional plumbers, and then declared "impossible" by a third. It took him five minutes, and he needed no new parts... he just fixed the part that was bad! Amazing. Other things he has done around our house include: rebuilding the basement stairs (on an emergency basis), repairing and painting 4 large columns on the front of our home, installing grab bars for our mother, inserting a light switch to the electrical circuit in the kitchen pantry, repairing our telephone wires, trimming our hedges and cutting down a couple of trees, and most recently installing new flooring in our bathroom which included replacing the shutoff valve and supply line and putting all new parts in the toilet. He shows up on time, he works to budget, and he smiles a lot. I have recommended Matt for several friends, and I recommend him to you without any reservations whatsoever. I just ask you not to keep him TOO busy so that he's available for us too!

Tim came over and hung two toilets, took out a mess of old water softener pipes underneath my kitchen sink, put in a new kitchen faucet, and prepared new bathroom sink with a new faucet. He was wonderful. Professional, plus we already scheduled him to come back to do some more work. If you need a plumber you would be hard pressed to find a better one. Thanks Tim see you soon

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
