Mr. Trogu and his associate did a very impressive job. I needed an electrical outlet installed, A/V cables hidden in the wall, and a large (65") tv mounted. This was an exterior wall, over a fireplace. I have some knowledge on how to do this, but with the type of wall and fireplace felt there were too many obstacles for me to overcome. As expected, there were many obstacles. Yet Mr. Trogu was diligent and managed to complete the task without turning my wall into swiss cheese. They maintained good communication throughout the process (scheduling, arrival time, planned. Purse of action). They also made sure to handle all of my products with care, as well as being courteous guests. I felt Mr. Trogu was very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Matt did a really nice job for us on creating a walk in pantry out of an existing hallway. It required moving an existing door for the bathroom to the other wall, closing off that doorway, and closing off the hallway with a new wall. After a coat of paint, unless you knew the floor plan for the house prior to the new pantry, you would never know that hallway existed, or the bathroom door used to be on the opposite side. Very nice job, reasonably priced. Thanks Matt.

I felt comfortable with A Brush Above from out very 1st meeting - estimate. I had my basement floor epoxyed, walls painted and my ceiling spray painted black. They did a very good job. The clean up was perfect and they finished working a day earlier than estimated. I will use them for all my painting needs. I will recommend them to everyone in need of painting or other services. We had our whole home painted by Expert Painting & Maintenance. We had an incredible experience working with Brett and his crew. We chose a different color for every room. The paint job was extremely custom and they nailed it. They were fast and efficient but still made sure every wall and piece of trim was flawless. Quality over quantity with Brett and his crew. I would never even think about getting an estimate from another painting company other then Expert Painting. They are very thorough, reliable, on time, and very informative about the process in which they follow. Extremely happy with how my home looks inside! Thanks Expert Painting & Maintenance.

Pemberton Painting was hired by the Grosse Pointe Club to paint and redo two very large rooms. We also hired them to dry-wall a ceiling in one of our offices. This was a big job to complete and they were here every morning at 7:00 A.M. on 12 hour shifts to get the job done! They performed a walk-through in the beginning and gave us reasonable estimates with-in a day! They were pleasant and meticulous about their work. We were on a strict time frame and Pemberton delivered! What sold me on this company, is that they came back to do some touch-ups without any hesitation or extra cost! When they were done, the place was cleaned up and immaculate! We are already looking to have them tackle another job here! Thank you Pemberton Painting!

I had Jeff paint both my finished basement and my 3 car garage. He inspected the areas to be painted, made all necessary fixes as needed and repainted walls and trim with a quality finish. Cut lines between trim (done in white) were straight and clean. He protected the floor and furniture and cleaned up leaving behind only an excellent paint job. I recommended him to neighbors and they were very pleased with his work too. He also assisted me with plumbing work that popped up while he was painting, so he knows his way around Home Improvements as well as painting.

I had propaint construction come out to my one-story bungalow. They gave us an insightful consultation and even helped us picked out the color schemes. I was extremely satisfied with their work. Enea is very understandable with scheduling and he was able to accommodate me around my busy schedule. They were extremely professional and cleaned up after themselves daily without me having to say anything which is very important to me. They painted the entire first floor within only one week! Our walls haven't been painted in a while and they had a dark blue base which had to be primed and double coated. With our toddlers artistic side developing, the walls had definitely seen better days. I was actually surprised that they could cover it up that well. They were very efficient and I would definitely hire them again and recommend them to anyone looking for a job well done at a competitive price.

Chuck and his team did a very big tile job for my nails salon (floors, walls, manicure bars, reception ,and columns ) and they all turned out amazing. Chuck and his team put a lot of after hours into my salon, they worked hard sometimes till 9:00 pm. Most important of all to me is that they are very professional , on time , and does a fantastic job without complaining. Also at very reasonable price consider how big the job was ( over 4,000 sq. ft of tiles). I would definitely hire American Home Improvements again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
