Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

Mariola did a great job in cleaning 2.5 bathrooms and kitchen in my house. I was first time trying cleaning from Thumbtack and impressed with the service she did. She took good amount of time in cleaning everything without any dust and it was refreshing after her cleaning. Especially cleaning kitchen she went out of box and cleaned each an every corner including Gas stove, Microwave outside and inside Oven outside and inside, Refrigerator and dishwasher externally. I would definitely recommend her and continue using her service.

Emily did a deep clean of my house and did a fantastic job. Everything was spotless! She pays attention to detail and leaves nice touches like folding the corners of tissue/toilet/paper towel. I especially appreciated that all cleaning products used are chemical free/organic. I would highly recommend her services.

We can’t begin to say how wonderful Three Mops and a Bucket are. They came on a holiday weekend when our other cleaner that we hired was a no show. We needed to move back into our home after new flooring was put in and dust was every where. I have asthma etc.. and Alicia made sure that she wore a mask, gloves and made sure my home was spotless. Alicia and her employee are beyond professional and cleaned EVERYTHING immaculately. They even added little air refreshers throughout the house. We HIGHLY recommend Alicia and her team.

I paid for a deep clean, and ended up with more issues than results. The person they sent worked at a snail’s pace for 3 hours and kept going out to her car. She used floor polish to clean the wood floors, didn’t sweep beforehand, and left streaks all over the floor because she did the whole floor job in less than 5 min. A 10 year old would have done a better job. They sent someone out the next day who was shocked and appalled at what the previous person did and did not do while she was here. The follow-up person worked tirelessly for 1.5 hrs but admitted even after all that time, she wouldn’t consider my house to be at “basic clean” level. The interior of the microwave never was cleaned, and there are cobwebs in the ceiling corners. The baseboards received no attention. The streaks on the floor will take several washings to disappear. After all that, the scheduler on this site has ghosted me and a VM on the company phone has yielded no result. Waste of money to go with this company.

Ioni didn't inform me that she is going to send her staff. I was assuming that she was going to come based on her text messages before the job. Though her staff did a good job except for few missing dusts, Ioni's customer service is very poor. When I had asked for regular cleaning monthly twice, she said she doesn't have any appointments for 2 months and she gave me a quote for $100 more than my first cleaning. I think she just wanted to avoid sending that person to my house. I really don't know the reason. When I asked why she is charging 100 more, she never responded. Also her staff doesn't understand English and she was talking loud to someone while on the job. So I will not recommend Ioni though her staff did a pretty good job.
