Nick and Ryan of NWT did excellent work to resolve a few kitchen issues. This is actually the second project Nick has worked on and I can confidently say: he does the job right, charges fair rates, and he is dependable. All-around a great experience and I'll be contacting Nick@NWT on my next home projects/repairs.

Matt was great. He installed our water tank and we couldn't be happier. He even called the following day to make sure everything is alright. We will be hiring him for our next project (remodeling the bathroom.)

I worked with this contractor for concrete repair and can not say enough great things about the experience. He was the first contractor to take the time to schedule a free consultation for my project right away. From the onset he was professional and took time to explain what the process would be in detail. The job was completed ahead of schedule and the contractor made sure to keep me informed as to the progress of the job throughout the day and provided picture during and after for my approve of the finished project. Please consider hiring this company. I assure you that you will be well pleased with the quality of his work.

Jam RESTORATION LLC was quick to respond to my call and serviced my project giving affordable prices. Very respectful and finished my request in a timely fashion. To add to that, the prices compared to commercial and other contractors were better and his services are licensed which is really important. I highly recommend David Sandercott for your next big repair or renovation.

Shaun helped me out in a pinch, I needed someone asap and he squeezed me in. He even fixed a major electrical subpanel issue that another contractor wired incorrectly, and stayed until he got it all done. And at a reasonable cost! He knows how to do most everything, does good work, is intelligent, honest, professional and personable. I will continue to hire Shaun and am glad I found him on here.

Phil and his crew were a breath of fresh air. We have had numerous problems with contractors in the last few weeks and my husband and I were becoming jaded due to the number of problems arising from having contractors in our new home. These concerns were shared with Phil and his response was, "You're going to love me". He was spot on! Phil communicated, called the night before to confirm paint colors and their arrival the next morning. They were on time and started IMMEDIATELY. I've never seen a crew work so hard and so consistently until the job was completed. And the quality of work.....all I can say is WOW! Phil and his crew made sure my husband and I were completely satisfied prior to leaving. They painted our great room (living room, entry room, dining room, kitchen, entryway stairwell), ceiling, and laundry room all in ONE day-12hrs to be exact. The entire process was easy and their job was flawless. I would highly recommend Phil and his team. I've actually already recommended them to my family. My husband has been talking about other rooms in the house we should have them paint. 😊 I would not hesitate to hire Phil and his crew again.

George, Mark and crew were great to work with. Our trust in George was an important factor in selecting his company. We knew he would do the right thing, even when no one was watching. Having known George for almost 30 years, we were comfortable leaving the house open to him and his crew, while we were away at work (they even entertained our dogs). Once they were on the job, they stuck with it until it was done. It was a huge job that included replacement of entire walls of cedar siding (over 1,700 sf) and trim (over 500 lf). They also removed and replace over 3,000 lineal feet of sealant. The balance of the job was scraped, power washed and primed (22 gallons for approximately 7,000 sf). We had George do two colors for the finish paint (13 gallons for the siding and 8 gallons for the trim). As with most home improvement projects, unanticipated issues arise. George was always able to suggest practical solutions to any problem that was encountered. His friend (Bob) even custom-crafted a new louver to replace an existing non-standard sized louver to our attic. Judy and I are relieved to have our house looking fresh and new. We wish to thank George and his crew for a job well done.

P & G Contracting recently did a basement remodel for us. We had done a lot of research on what we wanted, and had several proposals before going with Phil and his crew. He had built our deck last summer, and re-shingled our roof after the hail storm so we knew what his quality would be. Our basement was not a simple put up some 2x4s, drywall and a paint job. It required some extra imagination to re-route some plumbing, put in a multi-level stairwell, and improved our heating and cooling. We also converted our egress window into a sturdy brick and cement exit including a bilco door. Phil is very considerate to the work site, and treats it like it is his own house. We are very pleased.

Everything about the experience was top notch. From the beginning Jacob our sales person was able to come out around our busy schedules and give us a quote. I had other companies come out to quote the roof but this was different, Jacob educated us on the whole process and the different options. He was never your typical "pushy" sales person instead he walked us through the process from financing options to the different types of roofs and what the company he represented was all about. Further through the whole process he was available for any questions we had and he was completely upfront with us about costs, the process and what we should expect from Lennox Builders. When it came to installing the roof it was scheduled for Friday but with the forecast calling for rain I received a call from the project manager for my roof informing me they were going to push the project back till Saturday because they would not want to put my house at risk of getting rain on a roof that was midway through a replacement. On Saturday morning the team got to my house, they were extremely professional and careful to make sure nothing was damaged during the process, they even put tarps over over out bushes and walkways. The team even went above and beyond and pushed a car that's battery had gone out deeper into our driveway to keep it out of the way of any thing that could come off the roof. When the job was finished the only thing that had changed was a new roof, they did not leave a single nail or shingle behind. Not only does the roof look amazing the entire experience was extremely easy and I was amazed at how quickly the team got the roof done. I would highly recommend this company especially Jacob to anyone looking for a new roof or other home improvements. They were extremely professional through the whole process from initial sale to completion of the job.

I got to know this company this past summer when I called the owner to inspect several properties in Detroit for me. I then had them do some paint and renovation work, which I'm completely satisfied. I certainly recommend this company for all kinds of construction work.

Staggers construction did a great job for us. We had several concrete companies out and they were the only one willing to tackle the job we had for a fair price. Ted was always keeping us informed of times he would be on the job and what would be done. He also started and completed the entire job in a timely manner. We would recommend giving them a call for your concrete, decking or any job around your home.

Procraft was literally the only contractor willing to help us with a DIY deck project gone wrong. Vince was great to work with, we provided him quite the jigsaw puzzle to fix and a very limited budget. Vince was very creative and resourceful in finding an affordable way to fix and finish our deck and it looks AMAZING! Outside of his brilliant carpentry skills, Vince was a great guy and a pleasure to work with. He communicated with us every step of the way, and even brought in our mail and packages as our mailbox was down for a few days! I have a 2 year old daughter so I am always skeptical about bringing new contractors around. By the end of our project my daughter said "i no want him to leave, i want him to stay". True testimony to his character. We will be hiring Vince and his team for all home improvement projects in the future!

Bob Bauer was very professional, friendly and helpful. He made excellent suggestions that enhanced my idea's. He has a great team and employs people who really care to do a great job. He checked in with me during each phase and if something wasn't quite as i wanted it, he made sure it got changed to meet my needs immediately. I trusted everyone that came to my home and i felt safe with them. Cost wise - Bob was by far the best and worked with me to stay within my budget. His prices included the service of professional, fully qualified and knowledgeable contractors, high quality cabinets and high quality granite counter tops. I would highly recommend Bauer Builders.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
