Tanner and his crew did an excellent job moving me from a townhome in New Brighton to a lake home in Brainerd. They showed up in the morning right on time and worked into the night until the job was complete. Tanner took great care in packing everything so there was no damage. His quote was very fair and I feel their services were a good value. I would definitely recommend TK Movers.

We had a fairly small office move, yet it became very complex due to the bureaucracy of the Class A office space we were moving out of - The team at 1st Choice Movers handled it like pros through and through. There were a few teams on Thumbtack who were eager to help us move, even with such a tight deadline. Initially, we hired another company to help us out and even after going over the insurance requirements for the space we were vacating...they said they had it handled, which was great, until they bailed on us just days before the move had to take place (lease was up and our new office was ready and waiting). I contacted 1st Choice immediately because Gail had reached out several times, and expressed interest in completing our move and the clock was ticking-down. I reached out to give them a call and received no reply - I was getting nervous. Not two minutes passed and I heard from Ron. I asked him about the insurance requirements and he assured me that we would get it all taken care of, but he was really interested in coming to check out our space to see what we had to move and how it would be leaving the building before it was off to its new space. Not 45 minutes went by and Ron went from a voice on the other end of the phone to being in our office and getting a lay of the land - I was feeling some relief because this was more than our other movers had ever offered us already. He gave us a pretty honest quote of about 7-9 hours and what the cost differential would be with X amount of guys working. As the next two days went on, the pressure was stacking because the office space we were moving out of had VERY specific requirements in terms of the insurance and endorsements that would be required before they would let the team on the premises to complete the move. During this entire time, Ron was communicative, upfront, and had done everything on his side that he could possibly do to facilitate this move. He went so far as to get his insurance companies involved and even ate the cost of increasing his insurance to make sure we could get the job done. By Friday afternoon, we still hadn't been approved, but Ron was relentless. He was making calls and finally in the 11th hour, after he and myself spoke at length with the property manager and his insurance, we got the move approved. From there, everything was smooth. He and his team were right on time at 8:30 as agreed, he had even brought with an extra pair of hands to speed the job up - and I'm glad he did! The five guys that moved our office worked fast with a sense of purpose and urgency, but still took care with how they moved our items and got everything packed up - they also seemed to be in high spirits despite the complexity of the move, the bitter cold and moving on a holiday of all things. All said, they finished everything up in about 6.5 hours, even with taking their lunch break and communicating with me every step of the way. I'd easily re-hire Ron and his team for future busines and personal-related moves. Thanks 1st Choice!

I needed about a dozen items moved from our apartment and a storage shed to our new house that we couldn’t lift ourselves. These guys showed up and were friendly, efficient and were able to move all the items (and did it with a smile!) that we couldn’t lift ourselves. They were also available within 48 hours of my request so that was a huge bonus! 1 truck, 2 movers and 3 stops in under 2.5 hours and it was worth every penny!

Kaiden and Aaron showed up right on time and brought a trailer even though I wasn't sure if I needed one. In the end it was very very helpful. They were very fast and very strong and efficient. We went right over to where I was moving the items and they reorganized the whole area in no time so there was actually lots more room to put more things than there had been before! aIt is much easier now to access. I would definitely hire them again and highly recommend them. Bonnie

Both Chris and Jamie showed up to conduct my in-home quote -- nice touch. I'd had 3 previous quotes and total move weight estimates, and Chris's weight estimate was spot-on (the other 3 were low, which might have ended up costing me extra had I chosen any of them). Chris moved all of my stuff, point-to-point, from MN to AZ, on ONE truck and in 3 days. And he did it for less than the national brand name movers, who each gave me a 5-11 (business) day delivery window. Completely professional operation -- not one item was damaged or broken in the move. And Chris personally set up both my beds and reattached the heavy mirror on my dresser in my new home. I have not one shred of buyers remorse after contracting Robinson Moving Systems. I had an extremely tight deadline -- less than 4 weeks -- to move all of my stuff across the country to start a new job. No way I could have pulled it off without Chris and his crew's help. They earned every penny. And then some. Moving might be life's worst chore. But if I have to do it again, I'd choose Robinson Moving Systems in a heartbeat. It's a no-brainer.

I have used Piepho twice now. Once for a move to California, and once for a move a few blocks away. In both cases, Paul Rubinsak did a great job putting together a package that met our needs and budget. The movers were very professional and courteous. Would not hesitate to use them again.

I had movers move furniture, and boxes from garage into upstairs. They did everything very professional. They made sure they did not bang against any walls, they helped put the bed together and that was very helpful. I also noticed they made sure they were bending and lifting properly to ensure no accidents.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
