I hired Daniel for SAT tutoring about a month before the test. In such a short time frame, he not only prepared me for the strategies and problems on the exam, but helped me overcome my long time fear of math. He was extremely patient and understanding, always offering encouragement and little tricks to guide me to the answer quicker. After every session, he gave me notes to take home and always followed up with an email of practice problems and study guides. I took the test recently and have never felt more calm or prepared. I feel it went really well and look forward to spreading his name in the community so others can benefit as well! I would highly recommend Daniel! (coming from the stubborn teenager who did not want any sort of help/tutoring!) :)

I am a returning adult student, who has forgotten almost all the Math I learned years back. Jon was so patient with me and started with the basics. He never made me feel embarrassed for having to go back to the beginning with Algebra. Jon showed me techniques of how to learn and solve Math problems in a much better way than the text I was given. He also had helpful tips on how to study and reinforce the information. I was pleased with how quick he always was to respond to e-mails or texts, and was impressed that he offered many times to answer anything I was stuck on between tutoring sessions. Jon was always on time for our weekly appointment. I will highly recommend him to anyone I know and anyone reading this that needs some Math help. As soon as I am enrolled in more Math classes, I will not hesitate to contact Jon again.

My son struggled with Physics his junior year and after using school tutors we knew we needed to go elsewhere. Viking Tutoring was the place we went. Craig set us up with a tutor he thought would fit our sons need and he delivered. With Eric S. our son went from a F in physics to a final grade of B. We couldn't be happier and our son enjoyed working with Eric. We will recommend Viking Tutoring to anyone!

Maggie tutored my daughter, Katie, in high school math. It was a subject my daughter had a great deal of difficulty in. Maggie was able to make the subject relevant and engage my daughter in the learning process. Katie's grades and understanding of the subject improved during her time with Maggie. She still speaks highly of Maggie and remembers her tutoring time fondly.

If you are looking for a Calculus or Physics tutor Alex without a doubt is the person to use. I had been spending two hours a night with my daughter and she was meeting with her teacher before and after school to no avail. She was flunking AP Calculus and their was only 4 weeks left in the class. I hired Alex in panic mode. She had two unit exams and a final left to bring her grade up. In four short weeks Alex brought her grade up from an E to a C and she got a B on the final. There is no way my daughter would have passed the class if it had not been for Alex. Alex instilled her with the confidence that she could learn the material and would be successful. That she would be able to learn the Calculus and Physics that she needs to pursue her goal of a career in Marine Biology. Alex has helped keep the dream alive in my daughter and I will forever be grateful for that. When I listened to Alex interact with my daughter during the sessions his love of teaching, genuine desire to help my daughter and ability to connect with her in a fun and productive way was way beyond any of the other tutors I have ever used. As far as responsiveness, Alex rose to the challenge and juggled his schedule. He worked around my daughters cross country meet schedule and other commitments while also making sure he was able to meet with her the night before each exam to help her with final prep for them. He met with her two to three times a week when it worked for her to make sure she passed the class. My daughter has dyslexia which creates unique challenges particularly in math. She tends to look at problems and get to solutions in different ways then most people would. Alex took the time to make sure he understood how my daughter was looking at problems and would adjust the way he approached the solution to match her problem solving style rather than trying to force her to solve the problem using the standard textbook solution guide. Alex made the sessions productive but also fun. I would hear them joke and make light of errors. My daughter also used Alex the following term for her Honors Physics class with the same results. Alex took the time to drive to my daughters school to meet with her physics teacher. He reviewed the curriculum and her tests to see what areas my daughter was struggling with which helped him fine tune his tutoring time with my daughter. You will be extremely pleased with Alex.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

  • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
  • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
