Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

What is included in a deep house cleaning vs. a basic house cleaning?

A basic house cleaning typically includes tasks like carpet cleaning, wiping countertops, taking out the trash, doing the laundry and washing dishes. A deep house cleaning is a much more involved process, where all aspects of the home are given full attention for a cleanout. In a deep house cleaning, the cleaners will wet-wipe everything from door frames to light switch plates, making sure to also clean walls, windows, air vents, ceiling fans, furniture and more.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

When viewing house cleaners on Thumbtack, you might see a Top Pro badge. This indicates that the service is one of the most popular and highly-rated professionals using the platform.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

Mrs. Sumner’s Cleaning service was amazing. Our first deep clean was after two very messy room remodels and the house sparkled when the cleaning was done! Can’t wait for our monthly cleanings. Thank you Caroleka!

I had a short timeline to get my house on the market. Abi’s Custom Cleaning was able to get me in within a few days, which was a lifesaver. The team worked QUICK leaving my house sparkling from top to bottom. The windows have never been this clean in the 6 years that I’ve lived here. I’d definitely use the service again.

We contacted Diehl after finding out our regular cleaner was on an extended vacation. They were able to come out for a quote on a Sunday and provide a deep clean the very next day. We came home to a spotless house and would highly recommend Diehl for anyone looking for cleaning services.

They were good--very Punctual and Friendly. My house did not smell fresh after they left. Also used a swifter duster to dust---does not work very well--should be dusting the whole item--not just the top of item. Some items may require a clean moist towel to really clean an item. Thank you!!

We just moved into a house and it was left very dirty. Emerald Cleaners responded to my request very quickly and put a lot of extra effort to get the old grease out of the gas stove top. High quality work.

I hired them to do a deep clean on the house that I was moving into- there was no furniture and the house was already pretty clean. I detailed what I needed done in my request- baseboards cleaned, oven cleaned, outside of kitchen cabinets scrubbed, etc. None of that was done. When they arrived (30 minutes before the agreed upon time but luckily I was at the location) I tried to go over what I wanted done and was told they would do what was noted in my request, stupidly I believed them. They vacuumed but didn't do the back of the stairs. When they are just about done I get the bill but they don't accept cards, which I didn't know beforehand so I had to go to the bank to get cash and was not able to check there work, I even tipped them- not knowing what a subpar job had been done. They did fit me in on short notice but none of the things I wanted done were done and the other cleaning (of my empty already clean house) were not done well so I feel like I just flushed money down the drain. Normally I don't bother leaving bad reviews but they obviously don't even realize what a bad job they did because they actually requested a review from me! Best advice I can give- 1. Listen to your customers and do what they request. 2. Don't squeeze people in just to do a quick subpar job. You would have more return customers and less bad reviews if you took your time to do quality work instead of just quickly running through someone's house "cleaning" in an hour

Tanner and Spencer went above and beyond any and all my expectations. They are amazing and I can’t thank them enough for all their hard work. My house didn’t look this sparkly and shiny when I moved it. The really blew me away. So kind, courteous and they were working at top speed the whole time they were cleaning. They were an absolute joy and I am beyond satisfied. Thanks to them and Diamond Dusters. Both Tanner and Spencer do this cleaning company such a service.

Lexcia was very communicative throughout the scheduling and project process. There's was a scheduling issue which she immediately rectified, and communicated well about to resolve. Our home was in desperate need of a deep cleaning after 18 months at home with our large fluffy dog, 2 adults, and 2 small children. On top of that, we had recently done some remodeling, so there was a layer of dust we needed to get cleaned out. Lexcia was communicative about the work being done and gave us options for timing and cost. She took the time to get the work done right and came back a second day to finish the rest. I was so grateful she took the extra time and the cost was very reasonable. I got to relax in a CLEAN HOUSE instead of trying to clean around kids and a dog all weekend. If you're questioning whether to hire a cleaner - JUST DO IT!

He was very polite and responded very quickly. He even came to the house and told me what he would be doing. He seemed like he knew what he was doing. I worked in housekeeping and am very picky on how i like my stuff cleaned. However he seemed like he knew what he was doing. Now my house was a big job and for some reason he did it on his own even though he said there was another person coming to help him. His reasons for how it happened not my issue any more cause they were not explained to me. Fan blades were dusty, door trim still dusty, inside kitchen cabinets still dirty, walls not really cleaned, it does seem like he did the main cleaning on kitchen floor and in the kitchen area and just basic clean but i hired him for a move out clean/ deep clean, good clean and walls. Now if you ran out of time and cause your partner didnt show or something i could have worked with him. But just to not do a good job and take all day. I still payed and tipped cause im not a trash person. I really dont feel like it was deserved cause when i went back to the house the next day and washed all the walls and floors and got most of the smell out myself and my kids went back over all the cabinets and trim cause they had too. I feel this was not worth it. Now he is very polite and very responsive and he does a decent job maybe mine was just to big of a job for just him. But i would not hire him again. But i dont feel you should ever have to go over anyone work. I work hard for my money also and feel like i just lost out on alot of money.

I was only able to choose 3 of the 5 awesome things about this company but if able I would have chosen all 5!! Not only did this company do a great job of cleaning but they offered to go above and beyond to help us move items when we were crunched for time. They did a great job and I would highly recommend them to anyone! I plan to use them on my new house!

I hired April Showers from your service. She was awful. Didn’t clean the toilets, tub, counters, microwave. She basically came and vacuumed. Suzie was a complete rock star. My house looks better than it did when I moved in. She is absolutely amazing. 5 Stars!! I will definitely have her back. She’s worth every penny. I cannot express how pleased and appreciative I am for this service and for Suzie! I just can’t say enough positive things about her. And she was so nice. So kind and a master cleaner. Thank you Thumbtack and THANK YOU Suzie👍👍

Caroleka was very flexible when our first appointment had to be postponed due to a sick child. She is punctual and very communicative so I knew exactly what to expect through the service. When she was here she continued to communicate so we were on the same page about what I needed. She left me with kids rooms that are picked up and put together all cute (stuffed animals not just thrown in a messy pile 😂). When she left i just sat on my couch and enjoyed a clean, fresh-smelling house in peace. I'm so grateful to her!
