Betsey did my daughter's makeup, and coordinated a hair stylist, for Prom. She is so talented and sweet! I would highly recommend her and can't wait for an opportunity to use her again. My daughter will be seeing her for facial peels to help her acne. Betsey is very professional, skilled, and dependable.

I had an amazing experience with SM Hair + Makeup. Staff were above and beyond my expectations. Many times when I've had hair or makeup done for events, I'd show a photo, and it would somewhat resembled what I want, but wouldn't be exactly what I want. I had 6 bridesmaids receiving their services, and they nailed everyone's look, exactly how they wanted it. I had two bridesmaids, add on makeup services, because they were so impressed with the work SM provided. They were very quick, efficient, and professional. I would suggest that because they are so good, if you know what you want, you don't need to do a consultation. My only complaint is that they are a little expensive, ($50 Hair + $50 Makeup Consultation/ $300 bridal service+$15 extensions) but TOTALLY worth hiring.

Working with Karina was beyond amazing! She did an OUTSTANDING job on my hair and all of my bridesmaids and mother. Everyone was complimenting how beautiful my hair was throughout the night of my wedding. Karina is friendly and straightforward and has a great process to get things done. She was available to ask questions to and I enjoyed that she liked taking our ideas to turn into something of our own. Somehow my veil popped out of my hair after our ceremony but my hair was solid and didn't move! I was surprised! I would 100% have her as my hair stylist again for a special event! Thank you Karina for making my wedding a memorable one! Brittany Sibenaller

I was the maid of honor in my best friends wedding. She had hired Glamour Beauty to do all of our hair and makeup. My hair has never turned out better. I have thin hair and they were able to make it full without extensions!! The makeup was gorgeous, I had the airbrush and it turned out flawlessly. Professional and talented group of artists and hair stylists. Look no further and book them!

Bevie did my makeup and hair for my bridal shower. I contacted her at the very last minute, and fortunately, she was available to do my hair/makeup. I honestly could not have been happier with her work. I got so many compliments from friends and family, and I didn't even know I could look that good. She exceeded my expectations. Bevie is extremely professional, friendly, reliable and talented. All the products she uses are high quality products (my makeup lasted all day). You really can't go wrong with Bevie. I will definitely be contacting her again whenever I need makeup/hair done.

Joann was nothing short of amazing for my wedding day hair and make-up. She's the ultimate professional, showed up on time and got right to work. My hair and makeup were flawless throughout my whole wedding day - a single hair never fell out of place. She was fantastic in working with a fidgety 6 year old flowergirl and even worked in two extra hair updo's and still got us all finished perfectly ahead of schedule. Joann made the experience completely relaxing and stress free - exactly what I wanted on my big day. Without hesitation I give Joann the highest recommendation for anyone looking for special event hair and make up.

I have been a client of Nahla's for the longest time...can't believe I am just getting around to writing her a review now! She truly is amazing because she listens to your needs! She has helped me solve my acne problems by giving me customized facials and even better by recommending great products and self care tips. She even saved me when I went to another esthetician for a face wax who ended up burning my face! It was horrible - my skin was dry and peeling and looked horrendous! Nahla came to my rescue by giving me a hydrating facial and products to help with the burn. She ensured that I didn't have any permanent burn marks. Not only has Nahla given me awesome facials - with relaxing massages included, she shapes my eyebrows perfectly, cuts my hair and gives me a brazilian blow out. Talk about one stop shop! Love your work so much that even though I moved away, I save all my beauty needs for when I am in town and make sure to get in to see Nahla!

I had my hair cut and foiled by Tehya, she put in highlights and low lights, it turned out perfect. I have been going to the same hair stylist for 20+ years, so we were both a little nervous but she aced it!! I am extremely happy with her work! Jody V

Love the extensions that Loliya does. She is fast, inexpensive, professional and they look amazing! I have had them done now 4 times and they look great every time. The hair never falls out and maintenance is easy and cheap as well. I have had extensions for 10 years and had all different kinds and these by far are the best! Highly recommend Loliya at Soho Hair in Woodbury!!

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

          What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

          What is a seamless extension?

A seamless hair extension is a type of clip-on hair extension. The extension hair is called the weft. Near the top of the weft, a metal clip mounted to the weft on a silicone base is used to attach the extension to your natural hair. In a traditional clip-on extension, the base that attaches the metal clip to the weft is fabric.

People may prefer seamless extensions due to their lower profile; the silicone can be up to 50 percent thinner than the fabric, making the extension appear more natural — and, therefore, seamless. Seamless extensions usually can be washed (although you shouldn’t keep them submerged for more than 20 seconds) and heat-styled on lower heat settings. You can gently brush seamless hair extensions as well as have them dyed a darker color by a trained professional.

How much should you tip a hairstylist?

A hairstylist can provide you with a cut, color or highlights, or style your hair for an event. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110, but prices can vary greatly depending on the service you receive, where you live, and the salon’s or hairdresser’s reputation. A good rule of thumb is to tip your hairstylist 20 percent of your total bill. In smaller towns, 15 percent may be the norm, but in larger cities 20 percent is generally the baseline. If you frequent a salon where the shampooer, colorist, and hair cutter are all different people, you can divide that 20 percent among those service providers in proportion to the skill level and time required to do their job. Many hairstylists rent a chair from the salon and must pay a monthly rent to the salon owner.

How much do hair extensions cost?

Hair extensions are synthetic or real human hair integrations that add volume and length to your hair. Hairstylists are trained in different techniques to attach extensions to your hair. The cost of extensions can vary greatly depending on the technique used to apply the hair, as well as the type of hair you select. Synthetic hair is typically the least expensive, human hair is next on the pricing scale, remy hair is next, and what is called “virgin” human hair is generally the most sought-after and most expensive. Remy hair signifies that all the cuticles are intact and running in the same direction, making for smoother hair extensions in the long term. Hair is deemed virgin when all the hair is from one donor and has never undergone any chemical processing. Hair prices will vary from company to company; here are some examples of hair from online retailers.

          • Virgin strands (25 strands weighing approximately 1 gram each) for hot fusion application: $44 per bundle.
          • Virgin hair weave (approximately 4 ounces per package): $149 each.

Here are some sample application costs from hairstylists.

          • Full sew-in: $175-$200 or more.
          • Partial sew-in: $125 or more.
          • Micro-link weft extensions: $300 or more.
          • Full-bonded extensions: $75 or more.
