Bart did a remarkable job assembling a giant outdoor playset. He did in roughly eight hours what the assembly instructions said would take 25. We will definitely call him again for any future work we need a handyman for.

I can't say enough about good things about Aaron's service. I needed a repair done the same day. Most other service providers while courteous would not come out on a Saturday morning. After responding to me within 30 minutes of my request, Aaron articulated his game plan for getting my door repaired and was on site within 90 minutes. 1 hour later the job was completed to my satisfaction, job site cleaned and I know have the rest of my day to enjoy. Aaron is reasonably priced, professional energetic and polite young man. He is my preferred handyman going forward.

Steve recently installed some closet shelves and anchored a few bookcases to my wall. It was so easy to schedule an appointment, his pricing was fair, and the work turned out great. I will definitely use him again and highly recommend him to anyone in need of a handyman.

Donald White is wonderful. Though I had accepted his bid for a variety of tasks, including powerwashing the deck, it turned out to be too late in the season to stain the deck, so he lowered the price and took on a number of smaller tasks instead. He saw what needed to be done and agreed to come back at no charge when the carpet runner I had purchased for stairs turned out not to be the best idea. He reattached a set of stairs that I didn't even realize were unattached from the wall on one end. He goes above and beyond. Donald White is definitely at the top of my list of people to call for all kinds of handyman jobs in the future.

Best Thumbtack experience ever! I highly recommend Jam Handyman for any projects you may have. I had 4 Ikea bookshelves in need of assembly. Not only did they put them together at lightning speed, but they secured them to the walls so they won't tip and can withstand my cats climbing on them. I will definitely be using Jam Handyman again very soon for more projects. Great service and great prices

I can't say enough about how professional Handyman Pablo is. I hired Pablo to hang some large pictures and a very heavy mirror and it was perfectly done! Also, he helped me fix a closet door that was off it's hinges. Lastly, he charges a very affordable rate; you need to hire him. He's a true Pro! Chris Tearse Wayzata, mn

We hired Kel to take care of a few important baby prep projects at our home. He helped us install new baby gates in three different places, as well as fixed a wobbly door knob for our garage entry door. Kel was courteous, highly skilled, and able to make adjustments on the fly to help get our project wrapped up as promised. In addition, he was very friendly with our puppy and made us feel comfortable having him in our home. I would highly recommend Kel to anyone that is looking for a skilled handyman. Thanks Kel!

I bought my first home and know very little about Handyman work - when I reached out to Ruben he responded right away to set up a time. Even with a busy schedule he made sure he got all of my projects done well and in a timely manner. I would definitely use him for future projects!

I appreciated the communication before, during, and after the job. My Calypso washing machine would not complete the drain cycle, and on the phoneHandyman Haglund said that often it is because a child's sock is clogging the pipe. But when the machine was disassembled, no sock was found in the first two hoses. At that point he was very honest with me and said he was unfamiliar with my particular model of Kenmore. He did not have time left to dig into the awkward disassembly but felt terrible about leaving a job incomplete. When I explained how little I liked the machine and was concerned that the motherboard could be involved, too, in addition to it needing a new pump, he was in complete agreement that it might be better to replace the machine. I was having major surgery in three days and leaving renters with a 6 month old without laundry facilities was not a choice I preferred. Handyman Haglund offered to watch the used market in his area, send me photos of washing machines he thought would be good buys, pick up the machine I decided on, deliver it, and install it for the price of his original bid. I was delighted by his offer, which set my mind at ease as I prepared for my hospital stay and rehab. He asked for no money at that point. I insisted on making a good faith payment of $50 because if anything were to go wrong, I wanted him to at least be compensated for time and gas. As it turned out, after my surgery, my sister took over the machine situation, and I have not had enough hours in the day to get back to Handyman Haglund to tell him everything has worked out and how very much I appreciated his honesty and willingness to go the extra mile! (More like 35+ miles!) I would not hesitate to hire him again!

I can honestly say you'll never find a better handyman then Chuck. His estimate was very accurate and much less than the others. He is incredibly professional in everything that he does. He even took the time to show my 7 year old what he was doing and answered ALL of the questions he had! Incredibly prompt communication and he is very honest which is hard to find now a days. I really wish I had hired Chuck 2 years ago when we first moved into our house. I can honestly say I'll never look for another handyman again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
