Don did a great job on my stone tile floor. It had cracked all the way through and had a poor grout job from previous owners. He was fast, on time and did great work. He is also very fairly priced! I also appreciated the extra advice he gave. Will definitely hire again!

Juvenal and his crew went above and beyond, got our fence done during the busy spring season faster than we expected, in just about one day and took care of some other stone projects we needed done in our front yard as well. Juvenal and his team are incredibly professional, responsive, kind and gave me a good price for honest work.

I would rate Jake Olson and Nature's Touch Flooring as Outstanding. The work was done in June 2015. They removed old flooring and carpeting. Installed sub-flooring. Installed 597 square feet of underlayment and Brazilian Koa (tigerwood) Prefinished wood flooring and 310 feet of base shoe around perimeter of flooring. This was a major project. It included our Kitchen, Family Room, a Bathroom and Pantry along with a long hallway and three closets. It involved moving some big furniture that we could not remove ahead of time and the kitchen appliances and moving them back without scratching the wood. They anticipated taking 6-7 days. However, by putting in long hours, they completed it in 4 days. Everything was done beautifully. Everything was finished off perfectly. It included having to undercut the stone fireplace so that the wood would fit under it perfectly. It included retucking some carpeting in a room that butted up to the wood flooring. It included cutting back closet doors to insure a perfect fit over the wood. It included framing everything with baseshoe. They had to drain and remove the toilet and reinstall it after the floor was installed in the bathroom. They have so much experience that everything needed to complete the job was done without having to include any other vendor. They could provide all the extra touches needed to finish the job and make it look perfect. Everything was done seamlessly. Everyone that sees it says it is the "most beautiful" floor they have ever seen. I agree.

I manage a home and found them here. They were quick to respond, communicative, and the work was good. I had a stone paver walkway that needed the stones reset in the ground. The total cost was right in line with their estimate. They showed up on time and were efficient.

I'm 28 and have now owned my house first house for a year. Needless to say I'm not an avid handy man, I have called on Josh for a number of projects... From a picture I found online while browsing at work, he created my dream hexagon fire pit (with swings)! Josh has many years of experience and every tool for any job. His work is 2nd to none and he's way under paid for the quality but, don't tell him (I still need help with a few projects). I would highly recommend Josh to anyone looking for quality work, knowledge, professionalism all for a bargain compared to other companies.

I had great timing to get him between jobs. Tom cleared out a 22' square in my front yard and put in a stone circle. It looks great and makes the whole house look great. What impresses me the most was the removal of those old yew shrubs. I went at them with a shovel, chainsaw and a 4x4 truck with a log chain and had no luck. They're gone and I am very happy. Thanks Tom and crew. Good job!

We have had an excellent experience with Ben and the Green Oasis team! Bens design work was excellent! He listened to what we wanted on our landscape project and tweaked the design several times. The project included concrete and stone, irrigation system, several new planting beds and a total redesign of the front of our home. The project started and finished on time! The crew was professional, experienced and hard working! Follow up was continuos throughout the project with visits and phone calls. We were so pleased with the quality that we used Green Oasis to power wash our homes exterior and wash all windows inside and out, and have set up a lawn maintenance program. Each crew and individual have been professional, knowledgeable and skilled at what they do!

We were tired of the usual grass yard behind our house and connected with Russ Henry of Giving Tree Gardens. Russ designed a rain garden, butterfly garden and native stone walk and patio in our back yard and a rain garden on one side of our front yard. My wife's home office over looked the rear of our house and she enjoyed watching the different native plants bloom at different times over the summer and fall as well as the butterflies and bees that frequented the blooming flowers. We high recommend Russ to anyone tired of the run of the mill grass yard who wants interesting native plants instead.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
