Gene and his crew refinished basement, new ceiling, new floors and bedroom carpeting. Also electrical and bathroom fans in 3 bathrooms and added designer touches to first floor with new doors and hardware. Gene’s crew was prompt, professional and keep all areas tidy and cleaned. I would definitely recommend Gene for your projects and plan to use him next spring for additional projects on my home.

Nick was incredibly helpful throughout the entire project. We had several quotes and none were close in comparison relative to quality vs. cost as Top Notch. I would refer them to anyone needing home construction in any form. Thank you for your great work and we look forward to contracting with you again soon!

The project was a siding replacement for house and garage. Half of the house is two floors. In total there was about 2400 square feet of floor. We used heavy duty vinyl siding. There were a lot of lights, doors, windows, corners, etc to work around. The crew did excellent work meeting these challanges. Additionally, we went with full metal cladding for all window & door trim as well as fascia, and veranda support structure. The metal cladding was formed on site and perfectly fit everything it was applied to. The crew was here at 7:00 am ready to start and worked till after 6:30 pm. Mr. Lessard was here most of the time when he wasn't retrieving additional materials that were needed as the work progressed. The result was a project that went smoothly from start to finish. It is now a year later and there have been no problems due to winter weather or spring storms. We are totally happy with the results and have no regrets for choosing to go with Tier1 Restoration.

Al walked into a mess with my closet doors. I had a previous Handyman help me paint and detatch the doors. He corrected the errors and helped until the project was finished. Very easy to work with.

Matt was great! He stopped out to the site and immediately began offering ideas and sketched out quick ideas in the initial meeting. A simple suggestion of turning the building's direction on the site made a big difference in how the building would impact and make a statement on first impression! He also offered ideas we hadn't considered. Very professional and talented!

Job Scope: 1). build 24' x 32' garage w/9' double+ vehicle door & attached 8' x 24' covered porch, in backyard 2). convert existing attached single car garage into house to expand kitchen, livingroom, & dining room. Conversion to have a french door w/. Timbertech deck facing the street & glass door with side lights facing backyard & new covered garage porch. 3). Refinish old oak floors to match new addition oak floor; change out millwork & interior doors to match. 4). Reinsulate old attic 5). Install 2 egress windows in basement. 6). Upgrade downstairs bathroom 7). Upgrade electrical service to home & cable lines. RESULTS: We have lived in this house since 1984 and I have never been so comfortable to the house. Plenty of elbow room to relax and entertain, where it was once loud and crowded to the point of nerve racking. The curb appeal is great. Our house has never been so warm (existing furnace was not changed out) - no cold spots, no ice dams (a first). We interviewed 5 general contractors to rehab our home, we did not know Morgan until we met to discuss this work. Morgan is a top shelf person of honor and integrity, he lives up to his commitments and his finished product is outstanding. My wife and I would reccomend Morgan for any home construction project (and have). Thanks Morgan - job well done.

I've had Fine Home Design complete several remodeling projects for me to accommodate lifestyle changes post retirement. Great design, client focus, and personal integrity are important attributes of Mr. Johnson's work. For more than 30 years, I've followed his career and admired his ability to meet client needs and dreams -- from the antique styles of New England, to modern desert designs in the Southwest, to mountain homes in the West. I heartily recommend Fine Home Design for renovation, remodeling, and new builds in any area of the U.S.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
