I needed movers to help move my 2 bedroom 1100 square foot home, into a 3 story 1600 square foot town home. After spending hours researching moving companies , I settled on On Call Services and I'm very glad I did! J.T. and Andre were right on time on the busiest moving day of the year (June 1st.) They went over the paperwork right away, listened well to instructions, wrapped all furniture with care, pointed out any existing damage before moving an item, and carried large, heavy items up and down many flights of stairs. They were professional, funny, careful, and worked at a steady pace. It took 7.5 hours to get it all done, only stopping for short water/coffee/donut breaks here and there. I was actually surprised they didn't take more breaks... We ran into a small issue of fitting everything into the 20 foot truck, but the guys rearranged a few things to make sure it all fit. They even assisted with final placement/assembly of some heavier items in my new home. Words I would use to describe this company: reliable, professional, safe, affordable, friendly! Even though it took longer than I had initially anticipated (doesn't it always?!), J.T. and Andre helped everything go smoothly. I also want to thank Dominae and Tasha for being so courteous and thorough on the customer service side. They were so friendly when speaking with me, and sent a thorough confirmation email of my requests, charges, deposit amount e.t.c., after booking. I'd highly recommend On Call Services to anyone, and would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

Overall, I would to emphasize my satisfaction with the move as a whole. 1st Choice seems to be a reliable, friendly company. Pros: -Very friendly but also serious about their jobs. They don't waste time, and they don't force small talk with their customers. It seemed that they were aware of the clock, and were mindful of not letting the meter run. -The team was thorough. They took the time to carefully wrap all my belongings so they would not be damaged in the move. -They take the time to lay out how their customers are charged and ask questions about anything you may need. Cons: -They are a bit expensive relative to other companies. I set an appointment for 2 movers, but they brought 3. This brought my hourly rate to $165. Whether or not this resulted in a quicker job, I can't say. They finished in under 2.5 hours for moving a one person, one bedroom apartment. The total cost for this ended up being ~$420 not including tip, which I would imagine is the cheapest job they could do. -I'm not sure if it's standard, but they charged me for an additional half hour of travel time to and from their offices (15 minutes each way). -They arrived 3 hours late. I don't necessarily hold this against them, because I moved on the last day of the month and I know that moving companies are notoriously behind their schedules. It didn't inconvenience me in any way, but I also wasn't in a rush. This is just something to keep in mind so it doesn't come as a shock. As I mentioned earlier, I'm happy with the move as they were efficient and very helpful. They probably aren't the cheapest, but they seem to be a good option outside of that variable. I would definitely recommend them as long as you are comfortable with the price.

Awesome moving company! I would definitely hire them again. The company is very affordable, they don't charge the fee to come to your home and leave your home like most other moving companies. The guys were nice, careful, and professional. They were able to book my move the day before my move (flexible team). Great company to move you!

This is the first time I used a moving company. Goal Line was the only company to offer to come to the house to give an in-house estimate, everyone else was either via email or phone. Goal Line's quote was right in line with everyone else. On moving day, they arrived on time, began moving items right away, very professional and had a great sense of humor which made things go even better. I would highly recommend using Goal Line with your next move.

College Moving Labor was excellent. They are one of the more reasonably priced moving companies and it is certainly worth every penny. The two gentlemen that assisted me were prompt with their arrival and made sure to use every last minute to help me out. On top of all of that, they had an excellent attitude which made my move way more enjoyable.

We LOVED working with Chester/Premium Moving Services! Chester was always responsive, called to confirm our appointment the day-of, showed up exactly on time, were so careful moving a giant armoire down a set of stairs and were so kind when it took me longer to run out to get cash than it took for them to do the actual job. We would (and will!) hire Chester again in a heartbeat.

The front end of our move from Minnesota was flawless. From the moment we met Paul, we were certain this was the right company for us (we interviewed 5 moving companies). Our packers in MN were considerate, quick, and professional. Tami provided us with support throughout. It was a pleasure to work with her. Our only hitch in the moving process was the scheduled delivery date. The driver who delivered indicated that he was on time with delivery and that I (or office personnel) must have been mistaken. Also, they were short-staffed and many items were not delivered to areas I had indicated to them. As I stated; up until the day my household was delivered to my new home, the experience had been outstanding. I did not check the box for punctuality because of the problems experienced at my delivery end. I still would recommend services through Piepho to anyone who asks.

5-Star Movers immediately answered my message and were able to move my treadmill same-day! They responded quickly to all of my questions, arrived when they said they would, and managed my extremely heavy treadmill without any damage to it or my home. I would definitely use their moving services again.

I had movers move furniture, and boxes from garage into upstairs. They did everything very professional. They made sure they did not bang against any walls, they helped put the bed together and that was very helpful. I also noticed they made sure they were bending and lifting properly to ensure no accidents.

We recently used Daymakers to help move a family member's belongings out of an apartment and into storage. I grew up in the area, but live in Atlanta now, so we were coordinating from long distance. They made it SO EASY. I've used maybe five different moving companies in the last ten years and Daymakers was hands-down the best. I would recommend them and use them again without any hesitation. They were early (I've never had a moving service be on time, let alone early), the staff was incredibly professional and courteous, and they handled everything with care. I never once felt like something would break or wasn't being handled as if it were their own belongings. These guys hustled, as well. Sometimes with hourly service, you get movers who take their time, trying to rack up the fees. Not the case with Daymakers. They were efficient and exceeded my time expectations by over an hour. Also, I loved that the price included everything - the labor, the truck, and the moving blankets. Other services will tell you something low, but then tack on fees for mileage or blankets. I learned that they hard way before. Daymakers was up front and everything was inclusive, making it very easy to know what we would pay in the end. Lastly, setting everything up with them was easy. Great communication. All around it was the easiest moving experience we have had, and during a particularly stressful time at that.

Alex and company are amazing! We were being strung along by our big-name moving company, and needed to be in Missouri to start a new job. After yet another delay, and yet another "guarantee", we were desperate and found AmerApex Moving. Alex contacted us on a Monday and by Thursday, they were there! They were absolute lifesavers, and did everything they could to take care of our belongings and make us feel at ease. And then they were in Missouri by Saturday to unload everything in our new house! On top of that, they are incredibly friendly and made a stressful situation feel much lighter. We can't thank Alex enough, and wish every moving company out there could be half as professional and effective as his!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
