Aaron was very responsive for a project that I needed to be done quickly. We were able to schedule something right away. He is also trustworthy. Because I was out of town at the time of the project, I gave him the garage code to the location. While painting, he kept me updated via text messages and sent me pictures of the final result. The project included painting a yellow/orange kitchen/dining room to a more neutral color and adding a layer of white paint to some window and stairs trim. I was quite happy with his work and would hire him again in a heartbeat.

Our house is located in Brooklyn Center, MN. I hired NW Exteriors (Scott) in October of 2002 and again in May of 2003. John was assigned to the work of replacing our original picture window with a Simonton vinyl bay window; he also replaced 2 bedroom windows as well. Then in 2003 I again hired NW Exteriors - requesting John again - to raise our two- car garage header by two feet to become an eight foot opening. In the fall of 2013 I contacted Scott about the lower sash of the left flank of the bay window, which had a fogged appearance within the glass panes. He came out after that and he recorded the window p/n and size, then ordered a new sash. He installed it in December because of an order snafu. He came back recently (September 22, 2014) to correct an alignment issue with the top, right corner pin of the lower sash, which had been replaced back in December. Scott charged $75.00 for this recent service work. Overall, we are very satisfied with our experiences with Scott and NW Exteriors. He has treated us fairly in price and quality, and has been attentive to our needs. Thanks, Scott for the good work.

Barry repaired a kitchen window in my home. In spite of it being a seventeen year old window and challenging to get the correct part, he was very professional and did not vary from his first estimate to get the job done. I would reach out to him again and highly recommend Barry to others.

It was a very good experience working with Jam Handyman on my small condominium’s masonry work. We had a brick archway above an exterior window removed and replaced. He was prompt in assessing the work, providing a bid, scheduling the project, and doing the work. Additionally, he completed the work with some time to spare so did a few extra tuck-pointing areas around the building outside walls – all while coming in almost 10% under the original quote. If needed, we would gladly work with Jam and his team again!

Julio switched out some peeling linoleum on my kitchen floor last year to beautiful tiles that I picked out. It looks gorgeous now! He does expert work, and attends to the small details. I have an older house, and some of the windows need to be replaced. Several weeks ago, Julio installed replacement windows and built new frames for my kitchen windows, insulated them, and painted the trim to match. I can't believe how beautiful they look; I am so happy!

We had a patio door that was an original 27 years old, rotting and not shutting properly, our daughters high school grad party was coming up and I wanted it replaced prior. New Windows of America came out and quoted, followed up via email and phone call, had 24 mo zero interest financing, plus could get the door installed in time for the grad party. They were to the day on install timing, finished in 1 day, cleaned up and we love the door. I will be ordering future needed windows from New Windows of America. I highly recommend them. Initially, I contracted Kellington to repair a woodpecker hole in the chimney and replace some damaged siding. In the process, they found significant issues caused by years of water damage that was not properly repaired by the previous owners. Chuck and his sons worked diligently to identify the full scope of the problem and worked with me to develop a plan of action. In the end, a significant amount of work was required to completely and effectively address the problem. Although I was not happy about having to deal with this issue, after being in the house less than 3 years, Chuck and his sons (Ryan and Chad) did an excellent job on the repairs. They not only addressed the current issues but also put things in place to help ensure there is no future water damage in that area. See before and after pictures. We ended up removing the siding from the majority of the back of the house, repaired and/or replaced support beams, new windows and new flashing all, around, then new siding, etc. I am very satisfied with the work of Kellington Remodeling. Chuck, Ryan and Chad always responded to my questions and ensured I understood the work they were doing and why it was being done in that manner. I will definitely contract again.

Our window AC stopped working on a Friday of a steamy hot weekend. I submitted my job "after hours" on Friday and John replied quickly and came out Saturday morning to install our new unit. We are very pleased with the weekend service and with the actual work done. John was very friendly and easy to work with. I expect we'll be contracting him again.

The project was a siding replacement for house and garage. Half of the house is two floors. In total there was about 2400 square feet of floor. We used heavy duty vinyl siding. There were a lot of lights, doors, windows, corners, etc to work around. The crew did excellent work meeting these challanges. Additionally, we went with full metal cladding for all window & door trim as well as fascia, and veranda support structure. The metal cladding was formed on site and perfectly fit everything it was applied to. The crew was here at 7:00 am ready to start and worked till after 6:30 pm. Mr. Lessard was here most of the time when he wasn't retrieving additional materials that were needed as the work progressed. The result was a project that went smoothly from start to finish. It is now a year later and there have been no problems due to winter weather or spring storms. We are totally happy with the results and have no regrets for choosing to go with Tier1 Restoration.

Garrett and company installed a basement egress window for me. Garrett was very responsive and worked with my schedule to get the job done quickly. It looks good from the outside and seems solidly installed. I was surprised that the interior portion around the window and the sill was left unfinished, but we never discussed it beforehand and given the very reasonable price he did the work for... it makes sense that it might not be a 'full finish' job. I'd definitely use them again if I need any more work that falls within their expertise.

Noah came to the house and evaluated and took measurements on the four windows needing glass replacement. When the glass arrived at their shop, Dean scheduled an appointment to install the glass replacements. He took care to move furniture to avoid any accidental damage during installation. He was meticulous in his routine to remove the windows needing repair, went outside to remove old glass, and install new glass and apply the finishing touches around each window frame. He installed each window, made sure the handle and closing mechanisms worked well, and applied a sealant around each window once the installation was complete. He advised a multi-day cure time before doing any window cleaning. The end result was a much clearer view out of each of the replaced windows, at a fraction of the cost of doing a complete window replacement. We were very impressed by professional service provided and will not hesitate to call Noah Lamont and his team, should we have future window/glass projects in our home.

Pegram and Dexter remodeled our old three-season porch for us this past fall. We were very impressed with their attention to detail and the thorough, professional manner in which they handled the job. When Nick Pegram gave us the initial bid, he not only took more time with us than everyone else had taken, he patiently explained what he would do when his company remodeled, and why some options would be better choices to enhance the value and beauty of our home. He also explained where he would purchase the materials, and why he preferred to use certain products for their value and high performance. When our porch was remodeled, Nick took us through every step of the way, and a gain took time to explain any changes or substitutions that were necessary due to the unique way our porch was originally made (from 1960). When remodeling was nearly complete, Nick added some extra finishing touches that made our porch look amazing—completely different than how it had looked before. He also did some extra things (such as putting in matching doorknobs on several other doors) that were not part of the original contract. We are so impressed with Nick’s commitment to doing quality work, his ability to communicate with us and keep us informed of how things are going, along with his meticulous attention to detail and ability to visualize the final project. I would highly recommend Pegram and Dexter Construction for any home remodeling or construction projects, and give Pegram and Dexter 5 out of 5 stars. Candy Vittorini

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
