We used Catering by Dani for our company Holiday party. The food showed up right on schedule. Overall the food was good but could have been a little hotter. We are located in Bloomington however, so it was a little bit of a drive and it was near zero. The Chicken and Wild Rice Meatballs had great flavor but were a little bit dry. I would recommend Catering by Dani to family and friends.

Chris far exceeded our expectations. Chris helped us plan the menu for our dinner party for 10. He prepared all of the appetizers, salad, 2 entrees, veggie, mashed potatoes and cake for dessert . His food was fabulous! Chris was well organized, neat and tidy and paid attention to every detail. He served the meal (individually plated), cleaned up after himself and us, including doing all dishes, etc. and packaged up leftovers for us. Plus, he was personable and fun to have with us for the evening. I really could not have imagined how wonderful his service would be. On top of that, the price was more than fair. I cannot make enough positive comments about every aspect of our experience with Chris and I very highly recommend him!!

Instead of going to a restaurant for our annual holiday work party, we had an "interactive cooking dinner party" with Jessica as our chef/instructor and she did an awesome job. There were nine of us and we prepared the meal (appetizer, dinner and dessert) with her assistance at a private home -- the food and experience was great (lots of laughs)! Strongly recommend this type of party and Jessica!

Daniel has catered a holiday party as well as a summer barbeque each for 100 people and both were fantastic. He arrived on time and needed very little assistance from me, which was great. Presentation of the food was great, but it tasted even better. Favorites at my company were the roast beef and gravy at our holiday dinner and the bbq chicken and cole slaw at our summer picnic. His clean up & tear down went as seamlessly as his set up did! Daniel was the consumate professional throughout the day. I will definitely have him cater my next event.

One of the best professionals I have ever worked with. Not only is the food great every time, but the service is outstanding, deliveries timely, every detail accounted for and best of all...Steve works with you every step of the way to make sure you are at ease and everything goes as it should. We've used By Word of Mouth for corporate luncheons, employee parties, our annual Christmas party, and most recently an executive dinner featuring a 7course meal for international clients. I don't know where he gets his staff, but they are all exceptional and reflect Steve's very calm and in control demeanor, with a pleasantness that is well received by all our guests. Steve even pulled off a last minute job for 100 people for us with less than 2 days to prepare. Our "other" caterer over booked themselves leaving us high and dry. Looking back, I don't know why we didn't go with Steve in the first place. All of us here at the office would recommend Steve and his staff over and over.

We hired Serviette catering for a surprise birthday party which had about 40 guests. Serviette catering did a wonderful job! Kris created a perfect taco bar with all of the fixings. He was there making sure everything was filled and the food was delicious. The guests had nothing but good things to say and kept asking for his business cards. I would certainly hire him again. It's nice to host an event and enjoy it with the guest and not have to be stuck in the kitchen worrying about the food.

Chef Stiles was absolutely great. This was our first experience bringing in a personal chef for an event. Chef Stiles worked with me on the process and helped me get things set up. He worked quietly in the background and gave such a great presentation of the food. I hired him for my wife's birthday party. It was so great to have a healthy gourmet meal that everyone could enjoy.

Susan did a very good job. She was easy to work with. She adjusted the menu to our needs and was willing to work on Thanksgiving day. The dressing and potatoes were a little dryer than I would have liked but I didn't tell her that we liked them moister. Everything else was wonderful.

I have seen many events catered by Penny and her team, and am always impressed by how seamlessly and flawlessly they take place. Penny always comes more than prepared to make the event perfect, has a lot of creativity, great menu options, and very affordable prices. We've had her to banquets, buffets, anniversary parties, client events, birthday parties, barbecues, garden parties, and more. Hopefully one of these days we'll get to see her work her magic on a wedding, too!

Nate catered a surprise 60th birthday party we threw for my mom and it could not have been better. The food was all delicious and the service was impeccable. It was a huge benefit knowing we had someone who really knew what they were doing so we could enjoy the party. He came out to the event space, was early, set everything up and took care of all the food so well, and was so friendly and professional with all the guests. 10/10 would definitely use his services again. I was having a 60th birthday party on July 2nd with approximately 100 expected guests. This was a full day celebration which started with 18 holes of golf, followed by a birthday bash at our home. Obviously, it would have been difficult to handle the food preparation while golfing. I hired The Hen & The Hog Catering Co. to handle all of the food. This was a huge weight off of my shoulders, since there were so many other details to take care of in preparation for such a large gathering. We discussed the menu, and then I left everything up to Ben and his crew. When we arrived back to the home (which is on the golf course), the food was all set up and ready to go. The menu included pulled pork sliders, potato salad, pasta salad, and fruit salad. I asked that the fruit salad be served in a sculpted watermelon bowl of some type. Much to my amazement, Ben outdid himself by sculpting a round watermelon into a golf ball. It was very fitting for this occasion! I wish that I would have taken pictures of this as it was truly amazing. With over 100 guests, I was just too busy greeting everyone. Several of my guests remarked that it was absolutely the best pulled pork that they have ever had. Ben is truly a master with the smoker! And the potato salad is out of this world. As wonderful as the food was, it was equally wonderful to sit back and be able to enjoy the day. Ben and his crew took care of getting everything set up--including the chafing dish, serving trays, and utensils. I would highly recommend the Hen & the Hog Catering Company for any catering need that you may have!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
