Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Should you wash walls before painting?

Yes, in most cases you’ll want to clean your wall before painters start. Washing walls before painting helps get rid of dirt and grime that could affect how the paint adheres, including primer. You can do this using a wall washer, especially if the top of the wall is hard to reach.

The best way to clean walls is to use a solvent that won’t affect the surface underneath. Some experts recommend using a sponge, warm water and/or a mild detergent or soap. Abrasive washing may remove some of the current pain.

Cleaning painted walls should be done with care. If you’re not comfortable with washing the walls yourself, consider hiring a house cleaner near you.

I had a very good experience working with Carl's Interior Painting. We needed rooms painted, some were the entire room and others were just completed what was started. Our painters did an amazing job in one day. When I came home from work our house looked completely different, in the best way possible. I would recommend working with Carl's Interior Painting.

Nick delivered. First to respond, first to bid, first to talk. Responding within 10 seconds of an email. We only had five days to paint, and he bid one day, gave us a day to choose colors, and bought the paint for us, painting the majority of the interior of our 3 bedroom in one day. Not a single blemish, no spills, and charming on top of it. Thanks, Nick. Bam!

Jen did an amazing job! She helped me get a tremendous amount of painting done to get my house market ready to sell. The more work I saw her do, the more I added on her list of items I needed her to tackle and she did it all with a smile and positive attitude. Her scope included windows, trim, walls, ceilings - basically the whole house interior had to be painted and she did it all! Hire her now if you're considering new paint.

It was such a joy to work with Sarah and Dan to complete my interior painting project. The response time for a quote was amazing and they were very flexible with scheduling. Dan did an incredible job painting and I am still amazed he did the entire project by himself .. and completed it right on schedule! He works very fast, is very professional and takes the time to ensure that his work area is left clean/tidy at the end of the day. After having 2 failed attempts with other painting contractors, I am quite happy to have found Kress Painting!! I already have them penciled in for a painting job at my new house. Thank you Sarah and Dan for everything!! I truly appreciate it.

We highly recommend Travis for any interior painting job. He completely transformed the crown molding in our living room at a fraction of the cost that other professionals were charging. This was a difficult job that others were hesitant to take on, yet he was able to finish the project on time during the busy holiday season. Five stars!

I hired Dick to paint the interior walls of my new home. This included removing wallpaper from two bathrooms. I have vaulted ceilings in every room except the bathrooms so it was not a job I wanted to tackle myself. Not only did he do an excellent job but he also repaired a small crack in the ceiling at no charge. He was very meticulous in making sure all outlet covers and light fixtures were removed, all trim taped, and he pulled the toilets to paint behind them even when I said it was okay to just paint as far as he could reach. He was more of a perfectionist than I even required! Dick agreed to do the job on a handshake and would not take a down payment. That is so refreshing nowadays to see that kind of trust. He figured out just enough paint to leave with me with about a half gallon for touchups. I am so pleased with the work he did that I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. On top of that, he was just the nicest person to work with. And, his prices were very reasonable. All in all, it was the best decision on my part to hire Dick to paint my home.

My wife & I had been looking to paint our interior doors white (from the 80’s wood grain look)for quite some time. After realizing the scope of work painting 15 doors, inside & out would be, we decided to hire it out. Jose responded immediately. His price was fair, and he was completely transparent with me regarding timelines and what to expect. We currently work from home and have 2 small children, so this was very important to us. Our experience with Larry, the project lead, was just as good. He was in direct communication with us to start and end each day, addressed concerns as they came up and even allowed us to change up the color on one set of doors half way through the project. CertaPro wasn’t the cheapest, we even debated on just buying new doors instead. Larry took time to educate me on his process for spraying vs brushing/rolling & even pointed out the type of doors/quality that we had and it validated our decision to paint vs replace even more. The result is 15 doors that have a smooth, glass like finish. We were extremely satisfied with how they ended up and would highly recommend using CertaPro to anyone thinking about updating their interior look. Thank you Jose, Larry & Ed!

Dan & Crew were great to work with!! Very dedicated to doing a perfect job. They painted the whole interior of my house & were very meticulous about filling nail holes & sanding the walls where needed. They never took a break & they were here for 5 days. I was going to buy a new vanity for the bathroom to match the new light I had installed but they just re-stained it to match saving me $1,000. It was a perfect match! They also had to cut out a small space in the wall in order to put up my new mirror/medicine cabinet. There's nothing they can't do. I feel like I have a brand new house! I would NOT hesitate to hire Dan if you want a perfect paint job & then some. He's very easy to work with & really wants to please his customer! I give him an A++++

I would highly recommend Wilmer Vazquez for any interior painting needs you may have. I hired him to paint my commercial photography studio with really high ceilings, large walls and terribly worn/stained concrete floors. I had originally hired someone else who failed to show up for the project. I called Wilmer last minute and he came right over to quote on the job. He did both the walls and the floor in one day and came back the following day to move all of the furniture back into place, He was extremely responsive to all of my phone calls and questions and arrived to the job early both days. Both Wilmer and his partner took great care to do the job very thoroughly and cleaned up everything when they were finished. The quote was reasonable and the work was extremely high-quality. I will definitely hire Wilmer again. He's a true professional!

Aaron very quickly came to my home to give me a quote after I contacted him. I accepted his quote on-site and he arranged to do the job two days later. Noel, the painter, arrived promptly and worked tirelessly to complete the project in one day. The work was excellent quality and the amount they charged me definitely seemed fair as it was much more attractive than the other offer I received. I can only speak to a small interior painting need (I have a small 1-BR apartment) but I would wholeheartedly recommend MN Complete Property Solutions to anyone who has a similar need. Quick, painless, trustworthy and highly competent!

Aaron did a really great job painting interior rooms of our house. He is a solid choice for any project you have. A few details: --Responsive, on-time, worked hard to get the job done quickly (like 12 hour day, hard!) --Flexibility. He wasn't phased by my last minute changes (adding color changes and a hallway) --Easy to work with. I gave Aaron feedback on a few touch-up spots and he responded quickly and agreeable. --No frills; get the job done approach. And this is a compliment! Aaron didn't make the project more difficult than it needed to be. --Competitive price that goes directly to the person doing the work. I like to cut out middlemen whenever possible so the $$ goes to the worker, not the manager. I'd definitely recommend and hire Aaron again.
