- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We will sing through some vocal exercises (vocalise), and a song or two to relax and let your voice show it's current characteristics. You can bring music to sing from, which I can accompany, or you can sing something you know a capella. We will see what your current habits are for breathing, pitch etc., discuss past singing experience, (even if it's just in the shower) and any problems with your voice that you might have questions about. I will respond with suggestions, information and what I feel would be the best approach moving forward with lessons. This isn't a 'test', just a fun time to meet each other and be able to hear your voice and have a personal connection we can build on as we work together.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I began early music study at the age of five, at the MacPhail School of Music in piano and dance, flute and voice, and then accordion with the Traficante Accordion School. I also taught myself some simple guitar playing to accompany my singing, and later studied in the Music and Theatre programs at the University of Minnesota. I sang in the Opera Theatre, and also worked as technical assistant for the opera productions and scene shop. I also sang country music with my father who was a professional musician and singer. I have worked as a Music Director, vocal coach and 'show' pianist for Theatre in a Nutshell, Vocal Arts Players, Apple Valley High School, Normandale Community College, MN Showboat, Theatre in the Round, and seven seasons with the Stagecoach Opera House to name a few. I have taught voice in the past at Minneapolis Technical College, Bloomington School of Music, my private studio and through my Musical Theatre directing career. In my personal vocal performing I was involved in many recitals, community activities and musical theatre productions. Voice technique, healthy production/performance have always been a strong part of my teaching career spanning several years. I have played piano with the Edelweiss ensemble for eight years, my own studio activities, and accompanied dozens of singers, recitals, and community and private events.
