I hired Tom to record a video of my daughter's wedding in May of 2014. I wanted to surprise her with a simple (non-edited) recording of the ceremony. We agreed upon a very fair price for about 90 minutes of video. He arrived on time, was polite and professional, and made a beautiful video of her wedding. There was a slight problem with obstructed views when people stood up, but he covered that beautifully with various views of the chapel, windows, flowers, etc. The video turned out beautiful, lighting was perfect and the audio was clear and at a good volume to hear the music, all readings and exchange of vows, etc. I did pay a very small extra amount for some extra editing (to cover those obstructed views) which I agreed to before he proceeded, and I feel it was necessary and worth it. If I need a videographer again, I would definitely consider using Volga River Video.

These guys were fantastic. Everyone was wowed by their professional recording set up, with multiple HD cameras, lighting and sound equipment. We had some last minute scheduling changes and they were adaptable with zero hassle. Their rate is among the most competitive on the market, and I've worked with dozens of videographers over the last few years. Lastly, the quality of the final deliverable was extremely high quality footage and audio. You could see that they were actively engaged in the conversations with the people they were recording, making them feel comfortable while at the same time prompting them for great sound bytes. I will definitely use them again when the need arises and highly recommend them for your video project needs.

very easy to work with and quick to respond, also very good value compared to other videographers! the reason I am doing 4/5 is because the ending of our dance got cut off by the camera, so some of our last moves are not visible. it is not a huge deal, and the video overall turned out great. he did a beautiful intro for me that included one of our wedding decorations. they also allowed me to review the video and ask for any changes. I would recommend!!

I was having a hard time finding video for my wedding and received a recommendation through my photographer for MJS Productions. I reached out and he talked through his services with me. I was pleased to find that he was able to do my wedding for a really good value and be onsite at my wedding for a minimum of 7hrs. Overall, when we received the final video in the mail, it was so enjoyable to watch everything back over again. I highly recommend not just going with photography but also getting a videographer. It is so worth it, and going with Mike was a good decision we made. He was on time, he was a cool guy to be around on the wedding day, and he did a great job with our video.

Al Maruggi is, without question, the best, most professional, videographer I have ever worked with. Al was responsible for 100% of the sound, set, lighting, videography, complex post-production editing, and FCPX and Motion 5 work for my extraordinarily complex 3-hour "light board" instructional video — and I could not be more thrilled with the outcome. He listened carefully to what my goals were, and then engineered the entire videography process, from initial conception and design, through set work, filming, editing, and post production, straight through to final product playing for me on my own computer. At every step, Al used clear and responsive communication to guide me to decisions that would lead to the highest possible quality product. "You're a well-respected author," he told me more than once. "This has got to be absolutely perfect." I contrast this with other videographers who would come to my events, do a video shoot, and hand me raw video on a thumb drive that I never knew what to do with. Never ONCE did Al leave me hanging, having to make decisions I don't feel qualified to make. He always took me to the next step I needed to make my project perfect. Now I have something that families gladly pay $199 to purchase, and I am proud of it. Whether you need instructional video, corporate video, outdoor/artsy video, or sales and commercial video, I suggest you talk to Al. If you live outside of Minnesota, I suggest you FLY here to work with him. Highest possible recommendation. Five stars. Booking Matt as our videographer was by far the best decision we made for our wedding! He and his team at Made Right Productions were so professional! From the moment we booked emails and phone calls were promptly replied to and the the very reasonable price we paid for such excellent work was well worth all the stress of planning a wedding. Matt made us feel so comfortable just being ourselves, and enjoying our moment. I'm very camera shy so this was a huge bonus! He and the team were also able to capture the best moments from our bicultural wedding, We never felt rushed or that we needed to give cues on what to do it was all very natural. From the moment we shared our video we have gotten nothing but compliments, everyone loves it! Thank you for making our special day even more memorable!!

PhotogFilms are professionals and did an outstanding job capturing the experience of our wedding day from getting ready to the last dance. Everything they captured was from multiple angles and in pristine 4K resolution (sorry other guys, but 1080p just doesn't cut it anymore--I want to watch my wedding day on our down the road anniversaries in 4K). Everything shot was all sharp and in focus, even the low-light night time stuff looked good. They even put a wireless lab mic on myself and our wedding speakers so we could have professional sounding audio. Jim and Ashley-- the young husband & wife team that are PhotogFilms-- were super friendly and great when it came to directing, logistics, and continuity-- things like reminding us to not leave the hotel room without our wedding rings so we could have them for the photos and videos we took before the ceremony, offering to give some of the wedding party a ride in their car to the next location so we didn't have to take another taxi, and also blocking out some of the shots to make them look more cinematic. All around, a very good experience, although I wish we got our video sooner, but that's to be expected if the vendors you work with are busy and take their time to finish the job right. If you need wedding videography you won't be disappointed by PhotogFilms.

Ryan and his Modern Image Film & Video Productions company have done an excellent job for us over the years. He has helped us make a number of videos for a few of our websites, and they are not only excellent, but have great staying power. The videos convey a feeling using a combination of video effects, music, content, and rhythm that helps convey a broader message to our clients. Every time that we review our website for updates, we always seem to note that our videos are still spot on and perfect - that is what a good videographer does, is make something that stands the test of time.

The video Morgan made of my son's wedding was wonderful. She really paid attention to the bride and groom's wishes, and captured so many unique and special moments. I had been wishing I could relive the day, and Morgan made it so, in just a few minutes of video. The videographers were so easy to work with, professional, and friendly. The video really exceeded our expectations, and we will cherish it.

Matt was the videographer at my daughter's wedding at JJ Hill Library. His rates were very reasonable, he responded to every question quickly and made it clear he was interested in making the day special for the couple. Matt arrived on time and spent 6 hours filming. We love watching the DVD to refresh our memories of a day that goes very quickly. A 20 second comment from our son was missed on the initial DVD and Matt responded immediately to that notification and remade all the DVDs. We were very impressed with his speedy response as well as his being eager to make us happy! Also, Matt stays in the background and is not intrusive with his camera.

Working with Dan was a real pleasure. My grandmother passed away and I was helping my mom put together the memorial service. I was coming from out of town and needed a videographer in the area. Dan responded quickly and professionally. I spoke with him over the phone and decided to hire him. Dan did a fantastic job. I didn't know the A/V situation in the church, and Dan took the initiative to work directly with the church's A/V technician to make sure he had all the right equipment on the right day. He even made a special trip to the church to see the setup a few days before the memorial service. On the day of the service, Dan was ready to go because he had done his homework. He was unobtrusive and very professional. Afterwards, he was flexible on the number of copies of the presentation we needed made (I had under-counted at first). And he offered to add in slides to the video that we had put together about my grandmother's life during the service's musical interlude. It turned out great. Dan was responsive, professional, and high-quality. I'd recommend him for any kind of video work!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
