Michael came out the day he said he was going to and took a look at everything I needed done. He listened to what I wanted, made suggestions and improvements, and also showed me some options that will tie this project in to my future kitchen remodel. Very knowledgeable guy and very easy to talk to. I hired him to do the project and he scheduled it within a very reasonable timeframe. Very happy so far and excited to get the work done.

On our bathroom renovation, which Michael saved from a botched job we'd contracted from someone else, Michael did a superb job from very beginning to very end. He listened to what we wanted to achieve and then talked through a few different design and construction options, each at a high level of detail and answered all of our many questions both in person and that we sent him via e-mail and text/phone. He then sent us a detailed quote and after we decided to go with him, we set up a start date. Michael involved a plumber from his 'A-Team' of professional connections when it was necessary, who was also top-notch and who we also trust to have in our home and whose project ideas complimented and contributed to the overall vision. Michael worked nearly non-stop on our project and kept us updated while we were at work by sending photos along the way and also met with us on a daily basis to discuss any items that had come up during the day or upcoming choices we'd need to make about materials or design. He was also amazing at getting back to us quickly whenever we had questions. Throughout our construction project, we appreciated Michael's professionalism, good cheer, sincerity and genuineness as a person. In addition to that, he accepted nothing less of himself than exacting perfection, which is what makes the end product so fantastic to be in - every angle has been attended to and every measurement precise! At completion, he walked through the project and the itemized bill with us and only accepted payment after every last adjustment was 100% for us. I cannot praise him and his work highly enough! We are thrilled not only with our final product, but working through the process with Michael was such a pleasure, especially after a previous contractor who's unfinished work had to be demolished.

Kel did a kitchen remodel for us, including installing new cabinets and countertops. He provided both excellent service and excellent workmanship. From the very start he did detailed cost estimates and was very clear as to what issues might arise that could drive additional cost. He understood that we needed this to be an economical remodel and did a great job of suggesting ways to save cost while still having a great looking final product (this included careful demo and reinstall around backsplash tile that was in good shape!) Kel communicated well throughout the project and performed exactly on his stated schedule. We really couldn’t have been happier with Kel’s services and would definitely work with him again.

Picture this. ...a flooded house, with endless tussle with the insurance company and a gloomy moldy smell , until I met Julio. From hard wood floor installation, plumbing in the bathroom, installing a storm door, refinishing partial basement from water damage to helping with other handy jobs that were not even part of the agreement, because he is s perfectionist. The best part of it all was his professionalism. He treated my home with respect and I am happy to come home again.

Kim remodeled my kitchen. I am a design student at UMN and she was able to use her design skills (I think she is an architect) to help me find better options for my cabinets. This saved me a ton on money and involved her spending a day with me at Ikea. She is a lot of fun to work with and I am currently saving up so she can do my bathroom. The kitchen involved removing a non-load bearing wall, extending the kitchen into the dining room. New tile on the floor, new grant counter tops, new cabinets and all new alliances.

I needed a kitchen counter top for my kitchen remodel project. All the companies I contacted wanted 3 weeks at a minimum. Merl and Nick came right over, measured, got all the materials and had the most gorgeous counter top all installed in 2 days. Wow what a help!! Unfortunately, the top was inadvertently marred. I texted them thinking all was lost and they returned on a weekend to redo the whole top. It looked even better than before. They treated my project as if it were their very own. Merl and Nick are can do people. They will use their evenings and weekends to help you out and finish your projects even if it involves extra work not in the original scope. You will really like working with them. I sure did.

I was referred to Beckman Remodeling through a friend and used them for my basement and bathroom remodel in a 1940s-era home. Corey and his team were able to turn a dated and drab basement into a contemporary, bright and and open floor plan that we have received many compliments on. Corey maintained his timeline, was attentive to our wishes and was direct and thorough in his change orders. We were always kept up-to-date if there were any setbacks or issues that came up that were not part of our initial conversation. Above all else, Corey is extremely trustworthy and has a great deal of integrity -- you can take his word when he says he'll do something. I would recommend his services to anyone looking for a quality remodeler.

Anton Remodeling came out the same day for a bid. He provided everything I could do and scaled it back to what I wanted for now within my budget. The job was basically fixing what another person's terrible job. Anton was creative and made everything look nice. Since I've had terrible experiences hiring contractors, I'm happy to say I found Anton Remodeling and looking forward to hiring again for future projects. The neighbors already said the would hire after seeing the before and after. Thank you again for your hard work and quick turnaround.

We worked with Tony on a large remodel of our 80s style house which included a total gut of our kitchen and main bathroom; and work on our living room, hallway and stairwell. It also included a new sliding glass door and a few windows. Tony was a bit more expensive than some other contractors, but his work was great. He was easy to work with, trustworthy, and hired good subs. Even though living in a remodel is a challenge, they made it as easy as possible. Now a year later, we are loving the work. The only caution that I would have for working with any contractor is to make sure assumptions aren't being made and you are on the same page about the details of each step.

DPENN Construction completed two projects in my mid-century ranch style home: basement, bedroom remodel and front exterior entry way repair. In a 70 year old home, projects like this are never simple and come with unique challenges. Both projects were completed to my COMPLETE SATISFACTION and met or exceeded all of my expectations. The first thing I would say about DPENN Construction is VALUE. The quality of the work and the attention to meeting my goals for the job spoke directly to value. At every step along the way, David Pennington, immediately responded to all questions and conducted himself with respect for my home and Professionalism in his work. I will call DPENN Construction again when I'm ready for the next project!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

    • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
    • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
      • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
    • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
    • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
    • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

    Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

    • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
    • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
    • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
    • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
    • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
