I had new carpet installed in the entire first level of my home. They were professional and prompt. They worked the entire time and paid great attention to the details. Made sure the mess was removed once done. They were upfront on the cost which allowed us to plan accordingly. No hidden surprise on installation day. I will have them back to do my upstairs very soon as well as my kitchen floors. Will be sure to let you know how that goes!! I would recommend TNA carpet to my friends and family.

Pat from Sage Flooring installed both over 2000 sqft of carpet in our new offices and 1,300 sqft of hardwood floors in my new home. He did an excellent job on both. I thought the hardwood floors would be difficult because they were very hard (Jatoba and Cumaru are over twice as hard as red oak) and I was concerned because the wood was quite expensive. But Pat and his crew did a great job - all of the floor butts and transitions were perfect! He also used the more expensive cleats than staples but didn't charge me for them. I also asked him to put in a inlay wood pattern in the hallway that turned out beautiful. Additionally, he was on time and finished when he said he was going to. I recommend him without hesitation. Sincerely, Sam

I had RedLion services show up to my house at 8 in the morning to paint my entry, Chris wasted no time upon arrival and placed drop clothes down over all of my wood floors in the entry and began. I have 12 foot ceilings and am not a painter myself so decided to hire out, this is the first time for me because my wife has always painted in the past but she passed away recently. Once he began I'd says he way done in three hours cleaned up and everything! To say I was impressed is a major understatement. He only charged me $150 and that includes paint plus he fixed a few major wall dents for me. My entry looks wonderful! Thank you

My partner and I just bought our first new home together and wanted to have the hardwood floors on the main level redone. It definitely looked like they had not been touched for quite some time. We found Joe and went with him because he had the most consistent high ratings of all the other companies and individuals that popped up during our search. The ratings don't lie. Joe did an amazing job and the floors looked spectacular! He was very pleasant to work with, was able to get to our job ahead of schedule (and thus finished ahead of schedule), and was reasonably priced. He took extra time to remove and sand the old wooden floor grates by hand even though we said he didn't need to worry about them (glad he did it though), and to scrape off some old stain that had gotten on our white tile in the bathroom (from some project many years prior I'm sure). We had a slight hitch in the giddyup with payment, but Joe was very prompt and clear in his communication with us, and the issue was resolved quickly. Overall, wonderful job, and I would definitely recommend Joe to anyone looking to get work done on their hardwood floors.

I contracted with WD Home Repairs for: - demo of an existing bathroom consisting of carpet, toilet, cabinetry, sinks, and 1-piece fiberglass shower unit - floor tile installation - shower tile installation (walls and floor) Throughout the process, Donald was responsible, approachable, and reasonable. The quote for the project beat top-rated bathroom remodeling firms (Angie's List) by a significant margin. WD Home Repairs maintained an eye for detail while completing the project. As with any project of this scale, a couple of unforeseen issues came up. I was impressed with the speed and positive attitude in which WD Home Repairs resolved these issues. I am pleased with the finished project. The overall experience was largely worry-free. I would not hesitate to contract with WD Home Repairs again for future tiling projects.

Pablo just left my home after coming in and doing a super fantastic job. What a refreshingly great experience we had. My floating floors had come apart in several tricky places and I needed someone who was comfortable working with floors, baseboards, etc. He came in ahead of the scheduled time ready to go and did a really good work. My wife was so impressed that he wanted to know what else Pablo does and we will likely be using him to paint our whole main floor soon. Besides the quality of his work, he is very personable and his pricing is super competitive.

We've had Dave out to our home to tile two showers and two bathroom floors. The finished product is outstanding. No need for me to learn how to tile when I can just call Dave. He offered us suggestions on how to lay the tile out but it was up to us. He gave us a schedule for how the work would progress and he stuck to it. He was very respectful of our home. He asked where he could cut the tile, he cleaned up job site, and kept his tools organized and out of the way. We will have Dave do future tile work for us.

Picture this. ...a flooded house, with endless tussle with the insurance company and a gloomy moldy smell , until I met Julio. From hard wood floor installation, plumbing in the bathroom, installing a storm door, refinishing partial basement from water damage to helping with other handy jobs that were not even part of the agreement, because he is s perfectionist. The best part of it all was his professionalism. He treated my home with respect and I am happy to come home again.

If you are looking for help decorating your house look no further. Stacy is your gal. I refer to her to my friends as the Joanna Gains of MSP for rustic chic (although she can do any aesthetic you are dreaming of)! I hired her to help me furnish and decorate my new construction home. She was always very attentive and had a wonderful game plan to help me tackle such a huge task. She came over and measured my home and took pictures. She then gave me a 3D rendering of my home decorated! It was STUNNING. We then went on several shopping trips to buy the large pieces together. Later on we went on trips to find the perfect accessories at places an interior designer would only know about! Stacy was a great listener and was flexible if any pieces didnt speak to me. She was happy to point out other options that would look just as nice. Finally, Stacy got some amazing designer discounts at the large box stores. On the shopping front Stacy is happy to do as little or as much as you need! She can go with you or tell you what to find, whatever your preference. She is also a master stager and thriftstore expert too! Stacy not only does typical furniture placement, shopping, and decorating...she is also an architect who can make a ton of the creative projects she proposes in your home for you. You don't have to hire yet another person. Wonder woman I tell you!!! Stacy made us a custom mud room bench built in HERSELF. She used reclaimed wood from all over the state and from barns! She also made us a custom chalkboard wall. Stacy's daughter took the pictures for our collage wall that will line our steps, they are the things of dreams! Stacy also picked out a wonderful reclaimed wood wall paper for above the fireplace that is unlike anything I have ever seen. To sum up it Stacy is a joy to work with, she is a friend at this point. She can literally do it all. She is flexible on all counts and can help you as little or as much as you like at a very fair price point. If you haven't already, just hire stay. You won't regret it. -Tory

Nicola with Your Way Flooring was very professional and a pleasure to work with. I'm the Maintenance Manager for a busy hotel located in downtown Minneapolis. Nicola arranged a site visit promptly and returned proposals to me quickly. There were strategic challenges with this type of job and Nicola and his carpet installers performed incredibly. We are delighted with the finished product! I certainly found my go to flooring contractor.

We worked with Duane on our home remodeling project, he was amazing!! From the beginning he responded to every question I had, he went over and above to help complete our project, he showed up when he said he was going to show up, got the job done by our deadline, he was professional, he worked well and around the other contractors doing work in our home, and he was very respectful. We will be including him in our next project. Thank you again, Duane! Our floors look amazing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
