We hired OCS to move our four bedroom home from a storage facility to our new home. They arrived early, were polite and courteous, and took excellent care of our belongings. Their prices were competitive and well worth the services provided. I'd recommend them.

Tanner and Alex moved us from Public Storage to our new home. When we put things in storage, we had all kinds of odds and ends. No wrap on our furniture or mattresses. Really, no organization at all. When it showed up at the new house it was all safely transported. Wrapped to protect it and moved into our 3 story home without damage to our things or our new home. My wife says "they don't charge enough." Thanks TK Movers for the move. We would highly recommend to anybody wondering who to use.

We had to move out on extremely short notice and we were scrambling to find a moving company. Spoke with Gail and she could get a crew to help us the next day! This meant we did not have a lot of time to pack anything so we agreed to a third person to help with the packing and moving. Moving day came and I got a phone call from the crew letting me know roughly when they would be arriving. About an hour before the crew arrived Ron came to see what all needed to be packed and moved. He was very respectful and I appreciated the open communication. When Salvador, David, and Ross arrived they immediately got to work and worked their butts off to pack and move our three bedroom house with lots of very difficult furniture to move. They we very respectful and careful with our items and we actually had some fun while doing all this. They took their break after everything was loaded and met us at the storage unit right on time and unloaded the trailer in record time while managing to pack everything in the unit with awesome tetris skills! There were absolutely no hidden fees and we were charged exactly what we were told we would be for the hourly rate and supplies and everything. Well worth the money we paid and we will definitely be using this company again when it comes time to move out of the storage unit and into our next house! Very very impressed with the work they did and will recommend them to anyone! Great job guys!

I had a great experience. The two guys who showed up to help me move were friendly and efficient. They expressed concern about the state of some boxes that had been crushed by a previous mover when I moved them into storage - which I appreciated. I would have been happier of the previous folks had shown the same concern for my goods. :-) They also had a very good suggestion for the arrangement of stuff in the new location - which I accepted. I like people who think as well as lift things. I will definitely hire SuperSafe again, and will probably ask for Tyler and Joe again.

Spencer showed up in the time frame scheduled. Our piano was in storage for a few years and this is the first tuning since that. He took great care with the piano and spent a lot of time getting it tuned properly. Spencer was a very pleasant person.....I felt comfortable having him in my home. The piano sounds beautiful again. Laursen's are our piano people now!

They were amazing! They arrived within the time frame we had agreed upon and got right to work. For two guys, they were able to handle even my heaviest furniture. From packing the truck from my storage unit to unloading it at my new apartment, they never stopped working! The total cost came in less than I expected. I would highly recommend this company and would use them again in a heartbeat.

Jordan was very professional and nice and worked with me easily when a last minute schedule change was needed. The crew that moved my very large amount of boxes out of storage and into a house with stairs, worked steady and hard and got everything done in a timely matter. Very thankful for the great service and would highly recommend!

The two guys who helped me out this morning were awesome! They were on time, punctuality is important to me so that was on point, neat and tidy with the "red carpet" they rolled out to keep our floors clean, had respect for my home and my antique furniture by wrapping my precious items carefully and loading/unloading them in such a manner as not to cause any damage to my pieces, (my items moved are over 100 years old) and completed the job in a quick and efficient manner. I love it when people know exactly what they're doing and already have their plan in place prior to arriving. That's exactly what I got! Also, not only were they professional but they were super friendly, and just nice/good people. The price was fair and affordable with no extra charge for carrying items up/down stairs. I would absolutely use them again and would also recommend them to others as well. Thank you again Paul Bunyun Moving LLC, for a great moving experience. I am a very happy and satisfied customer! Big Up!!

Carlo Holleman and another worker from his company moved my piano this morning. They arrived when they said they would. Mr. Holleman was very professional and it was obvious that he knew what he needed to do to cover and haul the piano down the stairs and into his truck. When he discovered that they did not have the appropriate dolly to use for the hardwood stairs that were at the destination place, Carlo informed me that he needed to return to the company to pick up the dolly he needed and that it would take him an extra hour to deliver my piano. It actually took a little more time than that, but I was grateful that someone was still at the destination place when they arrived. And I appreciated his informing me of this so I could let the person know on the receiving end. The type of stairs should probably have been requested of me at the time of hire but other than that, everything was great. When the piano was received, I was told that they did an excellent job hauling the piano up very steep stairs. My piano was safely delivered and I was very pleased with the professional service I received from Holleman Hauling & Moving LLC and would highly recommend them to others. Thank you, Thumbtack, for offering this great company to me. A very satisfied customer, Deb Thielen

I had movers move furniture, and boxes from garage into upstairs. They did everything very professional. They made sure they did not bang against any walls, they helped put the bed together and that was very helpful. I also noticed they made sure they were bending and lifting properly to ensure no accidents.

Dante is wonderful to work with. He is a very hard worker and does a great job. Our project required him to hang three overhead storage shelves in the garage. It's the middle of winter here and the garage is uninsulated - he never complained. I was so happy with his work that I asked him to come back for another project. An exceptional value!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
