The first two lessons have been a lot of fun. Mike had me return a small questionnaire after the first lesson. On it were questions for students about the style of guitar that appeals to them, styles that don't, songs they would like to learn, aspects of the guitar they find frustrating, and questions about other aspects of music that may interest them (recording, bands). These questions helped me frame the kind of music I want to play and produced goals for music and techniques to learn. In lessons Mike is patient, full of good advice, and keeps the lesson on track. In short, Mike knows his stuff and I feel like we are off to a great start!

WOW!! EVERYONE KEEPS COMPLIMENTING OUR BAND!!! We checked out every band in town and these guys were head and shoulders above the rest!!! The Dap Squad is THE BEST live band we've heard and we checked them ALL out!! We saw these guys in Iowa at a stranger's wedding (by accident) and we said then if we ever got married, this WOULD be the band. As luck turns out they were actually from Minnesota. We went with the full 10 piece because we are only doing this once and wanted the to make a splash. Wow, I just can't say enough. They KILLED Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Prince, etc.. My sister turned to me at the end and said if she ever gets married they will hire this band... I'm just waiting because I already know. ;-) This band is magic!!!

We hired Michael May for our October 2014 wedding. Hiring a musician online was, by far, one of the most concerning parts of our wedding. When I arrived at our ceremony and heard Michael and his vocalist rehearsing, I instantly began crying out of gratitude. Michael is a gem. He arranged the songs that were most important to us and played flawlessly. He went above and beyond for us and arranged all of the equipment that we would need to rent as our venue was a park that did not have electrical outlets. It can be scary to hire a musician online, but we would strongly recommend Michael. He is amazing!

Musicians4Musicians LLP performed at my wedding at the Chanhasssen Dinner Theatre on June 20, 2015 and provided for us an atmosphere of fun, love and just plain great entertainment. I hired them before even meeting them in person because I could tell by their online videos that they were the best soul band in town. They were everything I expected and more. If you want real talent at your wedding, hire this band!! Also, very affordable!!

Dan was extremely responsive and professional throughout the bidding and hiring experience - he made it very easy to book his services. The night of the event he was prompt and flexible with the venue set up. His performance during our cocktail hour was a show-stealer and is one of the main things that has been brought up again and again as an awesome part of the event - he chose the perfect music and played instruments that were crowd pleasers. I will definitely hire Dan again and was asked for his contact information by several of the guests. Thanks again, Dan!!!

Rockitman was the entertainment at my wedding, and it was an absolute blast! Jon entertained young and old alike, and the dance floor was going all night! He was funny, engaging, and super easy to work with. You pay a bit more for live music than a DJ, but the quality and professionalism Rockitman delivers is far and away better than any DJ, and unlike most live bands, Rockitman is able to customize the show based on requests. I would hire them again in a heartbeat for corporate parties or any kind of event, and I’d recommend them to anyone!

To use an acronym to describe Les Izmoore, I would say WTF! (Wonderfully Talented Ferpormers!!!) These guys were Led Zeppelin before there was a dirigible. And who's more popular...J.C., or the Beatles??? Neither, it's Les Izmoore by a long shot. It ain't even close. While you may never hear Lez Izmore and Eye Candy in the same sentence, these guys are all exceptional musicians and amazing performers. Unlike bands I've been in...these guys start and end at the same time. Incredible, right? I've always wondered why I couldn't do that! If you want a great band, at a great price, that is better than you could have hoped for...these guys are it. At some point, they'll have to change their name to Moore Izmoore. Cheers music fans...these guys will make your day!

BW&M will be the highlight of your party or event. Besides being phenomenal musicians, they are great people and easy to work with. Lots of bands can play great covers, but this band is stacked with 3 amazing vocalists that have a ton of energy. Great for weddings, concerts, parties, etc.

I wanted to play bass in a band, and had some previous knowledge of piano. I contacted Hugh about lessons, and we worked from there, bringing me from essentially ground zero to now, where I'm gigging with a group on a regular basis. Hugh also invited me to see him perform with his group, Miss Fairchild, and it's obvious that he's a master of the instrument. It gives me a lot to look forward to, and to desire to work hard for. One of the best parts about studying with Hugh is that he is personable. A lot of music teachers, in my experience, can kind of have a weird vibe, but Hugh is funny and cool. I'd recommend him to anyone.

We were recently lucky enough to have the Neighborhood Trio play at our wedding, which was about 80 adults at the Bachelor Farmer. We didn't want a DJ or top 40 band, as we were aiming for more of a cool, lounge vibe where our guests could enjoy a drink and some music but still have a conversation. After all, many had flown across the country to celebrate and visit with us and each other ... We weren't sure how to go about searching for musicians to fit this bill, but with the Neighborhood Trio we stumbled into the perfect solution. Their music is awesome, and it set the perfect mood for an awesome party! Nothing against Journey covers, but if you are looking for a slightly more sophisticated option, look no further. As their website said, their music is "perfect with a dry martini" ...

They are a husband-and-wife duo with an option for a full band. In one week, down in Eureka Springs, AR, on tour, they played a blues festival (Bikers, Blues, and BBQ festival), a country bar (Chelsea's), and a jazz lounge (the Voulez-Vous). There's a bit of chemistry going on, and they are enjoyable to watch and listen to. They are a perfect fit for any occasion!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
