Excellent company to work with. When I was looking for a heating contractor I was first looking at larger companies. I wasn’t compelled to buy from any of them mainly because of their high prices and I was treated as a number not a valued customer. I wanted to work with a company that would help with a furnace selection and gIve me the confidence that the job would be done right. From start to finish Steve completed every step of the furnace purchase to install to a standard that exceeded my expectation. Pricing was good and every step of the install went well. Attention to detail was performed on the furnace install plus protecting the areas of my house where he would be working. Please consider him before selecting any other HVAC company 100 plus stars and I will recommend Steve to anyone considering a new HVAC system.

We couldn't be happier with our experience. Ellie called me immediately and tried to figure out the problem over the phone. When we were unable to he was at my house within an hour. He didn't just fix our boiler either.....he educated us on maintenance and what we could do and also when we need to call for help. His pricing was incredibly reasonable and about a quarter of what the competitors quoted. This was a huge relief to us as a family of 7 just 2 weeks before Christmas. He is highly recommended and honest!

I had Comfortech out a few months ago to do routine maintenance on my furnace. During the visit the technician recommended replacing a part that was wearing out. I opted to wait and unfortunately, the part failed tonight. I called Comfortech and Dave came out very quickly. Even though it was an emergency call, he offered to complete the repair at the same cost as on the previous visit. This company is honest and fair and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing their furnace repaired. Thanks again, Dave. You're help and expertise is greatly appreciated.

John was here to help within a half hour. He thought he had it fixed but I had to call him to say it still wasn't working. He came later in the day did more testing and surmised we needed a new furnace. This he doesn't do but offered people to call and charged me nothing. I would highly recommend this company.

I was very satisfied with the purchase and installation of my furnace. T & S quoted a better price than the larger local companies and was able to install the unit more quickly as well. Later, when I added air conditioning, I checked around and still got a better deal via T & S with a quicker installation time. I also dealt directly with the fellow who installed the units, so I wqsn't dealing with a pushy sales representative.

I hired Justin to install a ceiling fan in a peaked ceiling that had no power. It was a tricky project because the attic crawl space is tight and the distance from floor to peak is only 8 feet. He had to make the extension rod himself because he couldn't find one that was the right length at the local hardware stores. He did a beautiful job on the installation. I'm very happy with the result.

Mike did an awesome job with my furnace. I have an older unit and he was able to bring it back to LIFE! He really knows his stuff, walked me through what was happening and what I could do to prevent something happening again. I am even having him do preventative maintenance on my systems and trust him to do quality, timely work which I believe will save me more money in the long run. Thanks Mike!

Dave was quick, professional and very helpful. He replied right away and was able to come out within a few hours. He explained what went wrong with our furnace in an understandable way and was able to get the part needed right away. The price was fair and Dave was even able to help us save a bit by checking into the warranty for the part (it was still under warranty). Thanks!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
