Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

What is included in a deep house cleaning vs. a basic house cleaning?

A basic house cleaning typically includes tasks like carpet cleaning, wiping countertops, taking out the trash, doing the laundry and washing dishes. A deep house cleaning is a much more involved process, where all aspects of the home are given full attention for a cleanout. In a deep house cleaning, the cleaners will wet-wipe everything from door frames to light switch plates, making sure to also clean walls, windows, air vents, ceiling fans, furniture and more.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

How often should you have your house cleaned?

The frequency you should have your house cleaned depends on several factors, and the best professional house cleaner can give you a rough estimate of costs so you can budget how often you need someone to clean your home.

Daily house cleaning may be necessary if you have a home with a large number of bedrooms with young children and kids, although other homeowners may benefit from weekly house cleaning. A weekly cleaner can clean the bathroom, kitchen, do laundry, vacuum and mop. An occasional deep house cleaning is most beneficial for people who have recently renovated a home or are looking to do a spring clean.

Holy moly mommas - if you are a busy momma or dad for that matter struggling to keep your house tidy, these ladies were amazing!!! I opted for a deep clean because my house needed it badly with all the hours I’ve been working. These lovely ladies came in and spent 8 hours scrubbing from top to bottom and everything in between. I almost cried at how clean my house was when they were done! I highly recommend them for a deep clean and will have Paula back weekly to touch up as needed.

I did not hire her because it's faster to have house cleaning done by two people rather than one. The difference being 2 1/2 -3 hours vs 4 1/2-5 hours.

Good from afar, but far from good. Jacob and Peter were very quick to reply and came out to clean our house on short notice which was great. They quoted me $300 for a 4BR/3.5BA house that was empty (we were moving in). I asked for all the drawers and cabinets and shelves to be dusted and wiped clean; fridge and floors to be cleaned etc in prep for our move-in later in the week. Jacob the owner said he would finish in 3 hours and they worked for a little over 4 hours. From afar as I walked around things looked good so I paid him and even discussed the options of having him come back. But after they left and we started to open drawers and run our hands alongs the shelves we realized that they missed many areas. One tub was still dirty. Another drawer was full of hair; floors were still dusty and windows dried with streaks running across them. The kitchen counter was filthy. We paid $300 for an average cleaning job not for the deep cleaning I asked for.

I have been using eMaids of Kansas City to clean my home for 6 months and am very pleased with their work. They are professional and very thorough with their cleaning. They are always willing to provide additional care where needed. Ben, the Owner, has been an excellent person to work with. He’s always willing to discuss any questions I have or issues needing addressed. Ben has been cleaning my home from the beginning - sometimes with help, sometimes not. Today he brought a new girl with him, Rachel. She was very focused on the task at hand and provided a thorough cleaning service. I called the office and asked if she could come regularly once her training was finished. Ben has been faithfully cleaning my house since the beginning. I know he’ll be available if I need something or have any problems.

Tina is always on time, is a pleasure to have in our home and does an outstanding job. I love how the house smells so clean after she is here, which is saying something considering that we have 4 indoor dogs, two of which are huge and one that is long haired. I would recommend her highly to anyone!!!

Tina with KAMS Services did an excellent job! She took on the task of cleaning my home very seriously. She was very thorough and detailed. The whole house had a pleasant smell. She knows a lot about the products she uses and shared with me why and how she uses them. Her price was in line with other companies I have used or received quotes from. I am very particular about who I hire. I am particular about who I allow to come into my home. I always say, if I am going to pay someone to clean my house, then I expect it to be clean when they're finished. What is amazing to me is, I'm not getting the usual "after-dust" that falls down later all over my wood and glasstop furniture after the housekeeper has left. Therefore, she has removed the dust, not just moved it around. Would I use her again? Of course, she did an excellent job. Matter-of-fact, I have already scheduled her to come again in two weeks and hope to use her regularly.
