I recently moved from Missouri to Michigan and was very anxious about the experience. Everyone was professional, prompt, and polite. My anxiety was relieved the first 10 minutes they were there. The movers did everything I asked of them. I would recommend them to anyone moving and would use them again. Fair pricing and all my belongings were on one truck---not combined with other jobs.

Moving 3 large pieces and chairs locally. Movers arrived on time and completed the job quickly without any problems. Liked the per hour rate without a high minimum charge for time. Would hire again.

We had a few glitches. The first only one of the scheduled movers showed.for what we needed, just one showing up for the jobs was not going to work. After an hour of waiting, we rescheduled. Just so happened we called and behold the reorder had not been setup to apply people to it. So they fix it with hours to go before the work needed to be done, Luckily they found someone a little later. I was ready to throw 2 stars to this review and be done. Eric and his help showed up and worked hard to get me where was trying to get things move. They got done so quick, they helped my wife move some totes. They redeemed my faith in bellhops.

Showed up early and were ready to work as soon as we needed. Very efficient, despite the heat. Did bump one night stand into a corner, but that's happened with our last movers (a different company) too. 4.5.stars

I was very impressed with the quality of work, the dedication to professionalism and pride the movers took in their work. There was no/little downtown and I was treated with dignity and respect. My possessions were cared for, handled with the utmost care and delivered where I had asked each piece to be placed. My only issue was a table - wasn't reassembled - but that is trivial. I would recommend these gentlemen.

I was in need of a furniture pickup for a living room set. They arrived early which was awesome! They were fast and professional. Andre even accommodated my very last minute request, less than 24 hour notice! He and his partner were perfect for the job and I really appreciated their work!!! My living room furniture is setup perfectly as well. Andre's your guy if you need someone to move the things you don't or can't do.

Movers were punctual, even early. I hired them to move furniture to a different floor in the house. Sounds easy, but it was two really bulky, heavy pieces through a narrow hall. They were very careful and moved them without a touch to the wall! The two men were kind and polite. I will be moving in a few months as my husband is now infirm. We have lived here for 25 years and have a lot of stuff. I will be using them for the move especially since I found out they will provide a dumpster and can provide junk hauling service as well. BTW, they were very reasonably priced too! I am so grateful when I can find good professionals at reasonable prices! Thanks guys!

Jeff contacted me right away when we were in need of movers on very very short notice. Without thinking twice Jeff had John and Brian over with a truck ready to go within an hour. John and Brian were very professional, respectful, prompt, hard working and did a fantastic job getting our apartment moved. It’s not easy to find this level of service now a days and these guys went above and beyond to ensure the job was done right. To say they now have a customer for life is an understatement! Hire these guys if you want the job done right! Can’t say thank you enough to John and Brian for their hard work and professionalism. Job very well done! Thank you for taking good care of y family!

We had a great experience with Quality 1 Movers! The movers did a great job loading the truck and made the most use of the space. They handled everything with care. They also wrapped all the furniture well to protect it all. This was our first time using movers and it was well worth the money!

Big fan of One World Van Lines!! I was moving a full 4 bedroom house due to a new job opportunity in California. Getting bombarded with calls and emails was overwhelming (big mistake). A quick search in Austin, TX showed One World Van Lines. My representative, Philip, offered an onsite visual which made everything so much easier. He took his time to walk me through of what to expect and what to do to save money on my end. I chose One World Van Lines based on my agents customer service, attention to detail, and me feel comfortable from day one. Once the movers showed up, they didnt wait or slack off, they got straight to work which finished up pretty quickly for a full house pack. Having expensive decor, collections, and antique furniture made me feel very uneasy at first, however, they were not only careful, they made sure everything was itemized and at the end, NOTHING was missing!! My agent got a great price and quick turn around on delivery! I will recommend One World Van Lines to my family and friends!!!

We have moved several times and a few times across country. Our experience with Great Nation Moving was by far the easiest and hassle free experience that we have had with moving. They sent over an appraiser who was able to give us a quote after walking through our house and seeing what we owned and were moving. He was within $50 of our ending price, so it extremely accurate. The pricing was in-line with several other companies that we had quote out the job. Rose, their sales/account manager, was great. We explained that we needed to move from within a specific time frame, and they were able to accommodate to our schedule. We were driving to our new home as soon as the movers were done packing everything up, and they even accommodated a faster pack up by adding an additional member to the crew packing up our belongings. They delivered our items in less than a week, which was much faster than our past experiences. Rose kept me posted on the progress of everything throughout the process and seemed to be working 24 hrs a day to make sure we were comfortable and in the know of what was going on. She even called within 30 minutes of the delivery of our items to see how everything went. We did have some slight damage on one item, which we were not bothered with as the item was beat up from a previous move. Without us filing a complaint, Rose was able to get us a check to cover the damages. Overall it was some of the best customer service I have experienced. Its always a headache and there is always the hidden issues that pop up along the way, however, I felt Rose kept us in the know and ahead of the curve with the move. That goes a long way when you have literally everything you own in their hands.

I would truly recommend Horton Hauling for any of your local hauls. At the last minute, I was faced with the dreaded ideal of looking for another company to deliver my furniture. Fortunately, for me searching through the web, an talking to several other companies. I came across Horton Hauling who not only was willing to help me at the last minute, but offered me a reasonable price for one load. I look forward to during business with them in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
