Joshua arrived at our house within a few hours of our phone call and fixed a leak in our roof before the day was done. He made it easy and charged a very reasonable price. We would definitely hire him again.

If there were more "Stars" for the rating MLT Design, I would pick a galaxy. Mike and his crew whent to extra lengths to make sure the job was done right. Always professional and did not let any detail slip by. I was especially impressed with the after job cleaning and tidying up of the area where they were working. I think it was cleaner than when they arrived. Can not endorse enough. A pleasure having then considering all the past "slip shod" work we experienced from other contractors. Definitely hire them, you will be pleased!

Great and timely work. We wanted the drywall and painting work to be done before a date because we were moving out of our house. Denise and his colleague not only completed the work in given time but also did the plumbing work for free. The plumbing work was not part of the estimate given to us. Unlike other contractors we contacted for this work, Denise’s team was quick in responding to the calls and completed work in time.

I worked with Shawna on three homes and couldn't be happier. As I prepared to put my old house on the market, she painted several rooms for me. All had dark paint, but she selected the right paint-primer to cover it with less coats, which saved me money -- and did a phenomenal job of it! Did I mention I also had her prep the walls for paint? I just didn't have time to wash or sand the walls, and no way did I fill in the holes ahead of time. She took down all of the hardware, etc. and then put everything back together when she was done painting. When my husband and I purchased our new home, we hired Color Rejuvenator to paint every room. Shawna had a challenge with 14-foot ceilings and tight spaces around cabinets, but her work is beautiful, as always. In addition, she completed a beautiful faux finish in my bedroom -- and I know it wasn't fun or easy, but WOW! We then purchased a house to rent and were doing a full kitchen renovation. I asked Shawna to stop by to consult on the replacement backsplash, and she showed me a shortcut for taking down the old tile fast. We ended up hiring her to do some sheet rock work and painting -- made it easier for my husband to run electricity with new dry wall (and saved him the time from having to do it). She painted the new drywall, the kitchen walls themselves, and the ceiling. We also hired Shawna to install the thermoplastic backsplash panels that look like pressed tin -- beautiful work! All of the bids came in true, and she completed all of the work on time!

W-Marquess Construction did work on my home in many areas throughout the house. I had a job that 3 different contractors told me could not be done. Not only did Mr. Marquess and his crew do it, but they did it to outstanding perfection. I could not be more happy with the work! They were on the dot on time, extremely professional, and cleaned up wonderfully after the job. While they were here I had them look at another job completely separate from the one I initially hired them for and they were able to do it, too! We have a historic home, and you don't just hire anyone to work on these kinds of houses. You simply can not ask for better work from Mr. Marquess and his crew! I would definitely recommend and would have them work here again! They are the kind of people you can hand your keys to your house to, know you're coming back to wonderfully completed work, and trust them the entire time they're here. You just don't find those kinds of people these days!!!

We engaged Nate Goen of New Beginnings Constitution and Remodeling to do a complete remodel of a home that we had recently purchased. The initial condition of the house was deplorable. Almost every aspect both exterior and interior needed attention (roofing, siding, bathrooms, floors, walls plumbing). Nate has systematically proceeded to address each and every aspect of this home in a through, practical and economical manner. The outcome and transformation are amazing.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
