Highly impressed!! I hired Kevin to remove leaves from my yard. I live in a neighborhood with lots of large trees and my lawn and landscaping were covered! Kevin and his assistant arrived at around 4:00 and I wondered how they could complete the work in the remaining hour or so of daylight. I left my house and returned at around 8:00. To my surprise, they were still working tirelessly in the pouring down rain, and in pitch darkness! I couldn't even see their work until the next morning. My yard was spotless! Barely a leaf to be found! With Kevin's strong work ethic and attention to detail, I won't hesitate to refer him to anyone needing lawn work, and I certainly plan to be a repeat customer. Thanks, Kevin! 😀

Tim was great to work with. He took the time to really understand our needs, gave us great suggestions on how to proceed, quoted us a good price, really easy to work with, and was 100% responsive (and proactive!) throughout the whole project. We had just had a bad experience with a contractor on a different home project, and so Anything Outdoor was a breath of fresh air. We will definitely be using Tim and Anything Outdoor for future outdoor/landscaping projects, and recommend them highly to everyone we know.

Jon has been taking care of my yard for the last 3 seasons and by far he has done the best job of any others in the past. Jon mowes weekly, aerates my yard and controls weed growth and reseeds when needed. I have a very plush looking lawn and love it!! I will keep Jon and J L Lawn and Hardscspes as long as I own this house! Jon recently installed drainage pipes in my back yard and has absolutely resolved the drainage problem. Thumbs up and big shout outs to Jon and J L Lawn and Hardscapes.

Loera Landscaping has only cut the lawn one time, but I was completely satisfied with the job. I hope to continue this working relationship, because I like a great looking lawn and I believe I will have that with Loera Landscaping. We have discussed additional lawn services that he offers, and plan to include some of them in the future. Carlos did a great job.

Derek was very responsive, professional and helpful. I had a couple of trees trimmed around the house. He completed the project quickly and ensured that I was happy with the finished look. The yard was left in the same condition as when he arrived, meaning everything was cleaned up. I'd defiantly use this company again and I'd be happy to refer him to others for their lawn care needs.

A few months ago, I contacted Chris Troxel at the Grounds Guys to give me a bid on some modification to my landscaping. They immediately came out, provided professional advice, gave me a competitive bid, and executed the job on time as agreed. They went to extra effort to make sure they cleaned up each day, and did not leave even one scrap of debris. I highly recommend the Grounds Guys for your lawn and landscaping needs. Don Dimmitt

Blue Line Lawn was a little higher with their prices than the other offers. However, they were the most responsive when communicating and were very direct in what they offer and did a great job of fitting my last minute scheduling. The job they did on the yard was very good. What was even better is that they did not use the large mowers which tear up the ground. They left my yard looking extremely professionally kept. I would have no issues recommending Blue Line Lawn.

Precision Tree Care & Property Maintenance did a fantastic job removing brush from our fenceline and trimming our large oak tree. They were helpful and thorough when they came out to look at the job, gave us a fair quote, and were able to complete the job only three days later. They worked fast, cleaned up all of the clippings and brush, and our yard will be so much more manageable for us now. Definitely a great group to work with - I know I will be calling them again the next time I need assistance with our trees or landscaping.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
