Your burning questions: answered

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

After our second training with our dog, my husband and I can already see a big difference. We had previously hired a dog trainer, but he did not listen to what we needed, and didn't follow through on his commitments. James, however, really listened to our concerns and assured us if we put in the work, we could become the best leaders for our dog. I can't say enough good things about him and we're REALLY excited to continue training and see just how awesome our dog can really be!

Earl is a good listener and he cares about the dog and the pet owner. He was very clear in instructing me how to start training my new dog. We achieved the desired behavior quickly. I highly recommend him.

We hired James to help us learn how to be the leader we needed to be for our new husky, Gryffin. James was great to work with! He taught us how to feel comfortable with our dog and train him with several basic commands. After adopting our dog, we had several concerns about whether we were the best fit for Gryffin and if he was the best fit for us. Having completed training with James, we all feel more confident and know that Gryffin is the dog for us. James is quick to respond to texts and phone calls. He is, also, very flexible with scheduling training sessions.

My husband and I had recently brought home our very first dog. We were so excited but soon became frustrated with our dogs extreme anxiety and lack of socialization. This wasn’t how we pictured us getting a dog going. To be honest, even contemplated if we were a good fit for him. After only one session with James we came back home amazed. It was almost like we had a different dog! Can’t wait to see what the rest of training has in store for us. Thank you so much, James!

Just booked Melissa for our first training session this week! We have a brand new red standard poodle Arri and my boyfriend and I are very new to training the dog. We decided to go with Melissa because she uses positive reinforcement for training and this is really what we wanted for our dog (plus her rates are unbelievably good!) Melissa has been willing and eager to work with us from day one. She has addressed all of our concerns over phone and promptly answered our emails (I even sent her an entire list of things I wanted to accomplish and she has taken the time to read it, notes and all!) She showed up at our session this Monday and immediately got to work. Our dog was very taken with her and you could really tell Arri was actually having fun! She left us with specific things to work on this week and even when I had concerns on my own, she addressed them on the phone. I am so very excited to see where these training sessions will go and how Melissa will help us mold Arri into the dog of our dreams! Will write another review to post his progress!

Earl was great with our two dogs who had been showing aggression and barked at other dogs they saw on walks and while out using a shared park area. His techniques have saved us a lot of embarrassment and effort trying to reel them in when they would go crazy. Highly recommend him. Quick, painless and very affordable for all of his help. He teaches you how to train and keep your dogs under control in a very respectful and easy to understand format. We saw instant results.

I found James on Thumbtack and so glad I did! He saved our peace of mind and worked so hard with us and our dog Bear. It was not easy, it takes a lot of effort but James constantly checked back with me, provided support and encouragement and listened to all my concerns. Bear is high energy, stubborn and smart but I knew he could be a “good boy” with the right trainer. James was definitely the right trainer!

I hired Melissa because of her availability, price comparison, and the lessons she offered. I immediately could see a difference in my dog with the limited time she had him. If I ever needed to leave him with someone while out of town. I would immediately rehire her and continue pups training!!!!!

Manners PuPlease was wonderful in training my two puppies who had little to no manners (mind you they were both rescued from a high kill shelter in OK, transported to Merriam, KS, and then contracted parvo, which they thankfully survived - before we adopted them from.) Upon picking them up from my home in N. KC, Bernita (Bear) and Calliope (Chunky) were destructive, had regressive bathroom behaviors, were not crate trained, and could not walk on a leash (there is also a litany of micro behaviors that were problematic which she addressed). While Bear and Chunk were in her home - we received almost daily updates via text/Facebook videos! When she brought my babies home I was amazed at their transformation. Not only do they know basic training skills (sit, stay, etc), but are completely crate trained (they actually like their crate), not destructive, potty trained, and just lovable happy puppies! My husband and I took them to the dog park with their two sisters (pit bull and lab- who they adore and love deeply) for the first time this past week and they thrived! They love interacting with new people, dogs, and even children! They love children - which is surprising, seeing that my husband and I do not have children nor do children visit our home. I am so glad that I found Manners PuPlease and would recommend this business and its principles to anyone!
