Jeremy and Rachel worked really hard to repair my water heater but it is older so I ended up replacing it. They were able to get me scheduled in today and replace it. I really appreciate all the effort they put in so I could have hot water before it gets cold again. I will definitely call them again.

Steve came out and replaced my water heater even when it required some extra work. He even came out on a Sunday and stayed till it was done. Was happy with his work and his pricing. Felt comfortable having him work in my home with me and my small child. Would hire again for other handyman jobs!

Hired him to add a new 220 circuit for a water heater. He responded quickly and showed up the next day for a quote. Price was reasonable, so he came back the next day and did the work. He was friendly and very helpful. The quality of the work looks good as well. The new line is properly placed and ready for the water heater. Would definitely hire him again.

My family was prepping to sell our house. We had a few items after the inspection came back, and Joe helped us out in a very big way. He prioritized our work for us, saved us money over ALL the other bids we received, and he took care of everything: replacing a bathroom sink shut-off valve, inspecting our hot water heater, replacing the heater’s T/P valve, and installing a new gas log fireplace. I would say that anyone in the area would be hard-pressed to find better work or better value. I will also add that Joe was exceptionally responsive... I bugged the poor guy at least a dozen times, rescheduled a job at least once, and he responded promptly, professionally, and will certainly be my next call if and when I need work done in the future. Thanks for all of your help, Joe ~

This guy is too good to be true. Not only was his price the lowest by far, he was communicative and low-key throughout our water heater installation. He is genuine and happy to explain in detail any questions you may have. Definitely recommended him as I trusted him from the onset of the project.

Over the 9 years I have owned my home in Overland Park, and my experience with numerous contractors, undeniably, Aaron has been the most ethical contractor I have had to work with. Over the past year, he completed 4 projects in and around my home including electrical, kitchen, deck repair and refinishing. He's a craftsman and has immense pride in ensuring the homeowner is more than satisfied with his work. On the most recent project in June 2015, he was not happy with the work by one of his employees. He said it was not up to "His" standards so he spent the entire day re-doing the work. I would definitely hire Aaron again for several reasons: (1) He knows his trade - mechanical, electrical, remodeling. (2) He takes pride in his work (3) He does what he says (4) he's reasonably priced. In fact, I told him he needs to raise his prices as there are competitors who charge much more and do much less. Thank you Aaron!

This guy is awesome! He was one of the first to respond to my job on Thumbtack. Came out on a Saturday and diagnosed our problem with our water heater and quoted us a great price. Initially he wasn't going to be able to install until Monday. Received a surprise call on Sunday and he came out Sunday evening to install our new water heater. He above and beyond to help fix our problem. I would recommend him to everyone!

Eric took care of my water heater concerns, he checked for gas leaks - we found the hot water heater ventilation was installed incorrectly to begin with. He gave me a quote and said he would be able to fix it to make it right. He also inspected my A/C unit and furnace - I signed up for the yearly (2 visits) maintenance program. I felt very confident in his abilities and knowledge. He also used to instruct at JCCC! I found him highly knowledgeable and technical and was willing to show me/tell me/teach me so I know better about my home.

I had a very good experience with Brandon and KC Renovations. After receiving a questionable bid on a water heater replacement from another company, we contacted Brandon. He provided free estimations, professional advice, and timely service. He and his associate didn't leave until the job was completed and verified, they cleaned up after themselves, and provided all the documentation and paperwork I had requested. We have other projects coming down the pipeline and have every intention of reaching out to Brandon again. I highly recommend KC Renovations.

I woke up this morning to a leaking hot water tank. Wanted to shop local, so I called Polestar. Danny was at my house before 8:00, assessed the problem and started the repairs. I had a great experience with Polestar. They assisted with bringing a couple other items around the water tank up to current code Great job Danny and Mike. The guys were very professional and explained everything I needed to know about my new water heater. Next plumbing issue will be resolved with Polestar.

My house had these long and twisting runs of soft copper suppling the gas to our hot water heater, dryer and stove. I hired Jeff's Plumbing to replace it all in black iron pipe, like it should be. Nice job guys. It's perfect, I don't have to worry, my home is much safer now and up to code, in case I ever want to sell it. Big job, great price, very happy.

We had a water heater that was replaced buy 123 Plumbing. The water heater was in an odd location in a closet and it protruded halfway into the Attic. A competitor was completely intimidated by the job. Paul came in and spent some time evaluating it before committing. He did an excellent job! He obviously knows what he's doing. He is professional, personable and very up front and reasonable with his prices. I would definitely use him again.

Victory Plumbing installed our new tankless water heaters, they did a tremendous job. Mike came out and spent about an hour with us explaining how the heaters work and answered all of our questions. Victory Plumbing was also very professional and on time (which was a change from our experience with many other contractors) they cleaned up after themselves and made the whole experience very easy. Victory Plumbing will be the first ones we call for any future plumbing issues and will refer any family and friends to them as well. Very satisfied with Victory Plumbing!!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

        • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
        • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
        • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
