I used Mike and his team to help in a desperate situation when my basement flooded when my home was under contact to be sold. He gave me top notch responsiveness and service. The unfortunate thing was that he insisted insurance would cover everything, but they didn't because it was considered flood when water came through the basement window. I moved forward thinking it would be covered, but got that surprise a few days later. The price was high but I felt confident in the work they were doing. I had to have the guys come back to finish something that wasn't done fully/ correctly and they left the place pretty dusty, not cleaned up well. Overall I think this is a great company with fabulous integrity and they really want to do the right thing.

We needed a window repaired quickly after another contractor took our $ and left us after waiting 2 months with a broken window. Artem not only came out quickly but got the window in and installed beautifully within a week 1/2! If I have anymore windows that need repaired, I will definitely call him back first! Highly recommend! Sara F.

Marcus was very friendly, professional and showed up on time. He offered a competitive rate for our door installation, and the entire process went very smooth. He helped us determine what parts were needed and installed the door in a timely manner. We had him install a pantry folding door as well when we liked his work with the entry door. We would definitely use him again and highly recommend him.

We are new investors and Rob was very quick to reapond and gave us a free evaluation. We were under the impression we needed a new roof. After his inspection, he noted just some minor repairs were needed and he provided a 2 year leak proof guarantee for a very reasonable price. The other quotes I received provided the cost for a new roof and did not let me know I didn't really need a new roof. I feel Rob is very honest and I woukd highly recommend him!

It was a great experience hiring Luna to replace my gutters. Armin (the owner) was easy to contact and we set up an estimate appointment for the very next day. The next day he arrived on time and even called to say he was running 20 mins late. The estimate was fair and reasonable, and Armin said he could start within a few days. I contacted Armin the next day asking if he could possibly change part of the new gutter installation by eliminating a couple of downspouts on the front of my house. He said he would try to accommodate the change once the installation began. Armin and his crew arrived on time and installed the new gutters very professionally. They look fantastic and he was even able to eliminate the two downspouts I had inquired about. I highly recommend Luna for gutter installation.

Kerry met with our insurance adjuster one week, and we were getting the roof installed about 10 days later. The crew did a great job removing and replacing the shingles...kept debris all picked up as well. We have a simple roof, so only took one day for it to be done.

We hired Matt to finish our basement into a living space with a bedroom and bathroom. His bid was very thorough and during it he took the time to walk through the best way to set up our vision, such as the bathroom layout, what size of window we needed to get for the bedroom, the bedroom layout with the closet, etc. Throughout the entire process he added great suggestions and new ideas that helped us get exactly what we were wanting. We added the addition of a bar towards the end of the project and Matt went above and beyond to accommodate the changes and stay with the timeline. Matt was on site almost daily to check in and address any questions we had. His crew was great and we are very happy with the end results! We will definitely use Mateo Homes again if we have any other remodels in the future!

I have to say I enjoyed everything about working with Mr. Boyd and his crew, Tom and Rick. I got a couple quotes, and to be honest BuilderDirect's quote wasn't the cheapest, but I got everything I was promised and more. The quality of the work was amazing. I would highly recommend them to whoever needs siding and window work. Oh, and their financing was truly cheaper than I could get at my own bank. Hope this reference may help someone that really needs a quality contractor. The Harts - Olathe KS

I hired Mr. Rogers to install some new windows for me and was extremely satisfied. I had 2 other companies give me bids that were much higher plus they couldn't get to it for another 6 weeks or more. Mr. Rogers got it started and finished within 2 days. His price was considerably below the others and his quality of work is fantastic. I feel comfortable recommending him to anyone.

We contacted Elevate to help us add a new addition to a new house we bought. They came up with a layout that was better than everything we thought off. Their estimate was pretty accurate and they stayed on budget and made sure they confirmed all work before the works started. They added 300 square feet to our house, installed new floors, moved some walls and changed the layout, textured interior and exterior to match. They repainted our kitchen cabinets and rearranged some of them and completely renovated the bathrooms. When we posted our house to sell, everyone asked us for their contact information. Anytime we need anything we usually contact Kawa. He has remodeled a number of investments properties since.

Robert with Upper Level Construction Installed siding on 7 of our rental properties. 5 of which was duplexes. He did a excellent job and in a reasonable amount of time. He was courteous to the tenants. He also installed many new windows in the properties and did an excellent job. Quickly and without damage to anything. Robert also installed 2 or 3 sliding glass doors for us. He is a pro at everything he has done. Very nice guy and great work! We got several estimates on these jobs and Robert couldn't be beat.

We have just made arrangements for a site visit for our (very small) project involving repair/replacement of one vinyl window. It's too early to say how it will turn out, but we are encouraged by the initial openness and response by James at Arrow, who has us meeting with Mark tomorrow (Wednesday).

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
