Mike was a Christmas Miracle! I was in need of a new living room floor a few weeks before Christmas. I contacted Mike through thumbtack and he was at my house the next day with a plan. He and his guys returned 3 days later, early Friday morning, to tear out my damaged carpet, install new hardwoods, sanded the adjoining kitchen and hall wood floor, and stained new and existing hardwoods. They worked until nearly midnight the first night and continued to work hard all weekend until we returned home Sunday night. The floors were exactly what I asked for and the new hardwood floor flows into the existing hardwood. Two months later I can comfortably say that Mike and his crew are honest and amazing! I also had Mike repair some walls and his guy did a great job! We can’t wait to hire Mike for our new project.

I couldn't be more pleased with the experience I've had with Milt and A-1 Coatings Painting. This man really does professional, quality work. My deck looks incredible! Milt did exactly what he said he would do, when he said he'd do it. He actually did MORE than expected. You will not be disappointed. A-1 also does interior and exterior painting and drywall repair - I have more projects for them later this year.

Marcus was very friendly, professional and showed up on time. He offered a competitive rate for our door installation, and the entire process went very smooth. He helped us determine what parts were needed and installed the door in a timely manner. We had him install a pantry folding door as well when we liked his work with the entry door. We would definitely use him again and highly recommend him.

Sheet rock replacement on ceiling and repaired cracks in walls. Nice job. Only drawback is the mess this type of work makes in adjoining rooms. We would hire again.

I hired Rob/Total Construction Management to repair cracks/holes in my vinyl siding and some other exterior work. Since I didn't have any extra siding to use for the job, he took the time to find the closest match possible and installed it with perfection. I highly recommend him and TCM. He took the time and effort to treat my house as he would his own. He also kept me informed as the project was moving along so that I knew what to expect. Thank you Rob.

This company did a very good job. Kyle was very professional and called 2-3 times from his prior job location to keep me updated on when he would arrive. They did a thorough job with the chimney cleaning and inspection. While installing the gas logs, Kyle noted the need for a different gas line. He procured that and finished the job. Now the front room in very warm :>. Thanks for a job well done.

I hired Mr. Rogers to install some new windows for me and was extremely satisfied. I had 2 other companies give me bids that were much higher plus they couldn't get to it for another 6 weeks or more. Mr. Rogers got it started and finished within 2 days. His price was considerably below the others and his quality of work is fantastic. I feel comfortable recommending him to anyone.

We had a section of siding in need of repair/replacement. Ozzie was great to work with. He was very quick to respond to all of my many questions, up front and accurate with the estimate which was very reasonable in comparison with others. He and his friendly team showed up when they said they would, kept us in the loop during repairs and left the work areas nice and clean. I'll use them again.

Kawa and his crew were very impressive. They were able to fit us in right away. Kawa came the same day walked they house with me and my husband, took some measurements, and gave us an estimate on the spot. He went through hours and timeline and offered to start right away. They filled all the holes and did some wall repairs on Thursday. Sanded and painted all 4 rooms on Friday and did the first walk through with me Friday afternoon, where he marked things I could have never noticed. One of his punters put some red stuff where the marks were and touched up everything Saturday morning. Kawa stoped by for a final inspection. He went over the invoice which was the same as the estimate. The house looks amazing and this happened in less than three days. Did I mention he fixed one of the bedroom doors that was not closing for free? Provided it was a very quick fix for him, but still, great service. Thank you Elevate Kansas City.

Robert with Upper Level Construction Installed siding on 7 of our rental properties. 5 of which was duplexes. He did a excellent job and in a reasonable amount of time. He was courteous to the tenants. He also installed many new windows in the properties and did an excellent job. Quickly and without damage to anything. Robert also installed 2 or 3 sliding glass doors for us. He is a pro at everything he has done. Very nice guy and great work! We got several estimates on these jobs and Robert couldn't be beat.

We have just made arrangements for a site visit for our (very small) project involving repair/replacement of one vinyl window. It's too early to say how it will turn out, but we are encouraged by the initial openness and response by James at Arrow, who has us meeting with Mark tomorrow (Wednesday).

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
