Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

Great guys to work with. Came and looked at the tree we needed removed very close to our house. Gave us a good estimate and scheduled the job quickly. They removed the tree with no damage to the house or yard. Did a great job. Quick and cleaned up everything like they were never there. I'll be calling them again for future work.

Parish Lawn & Tree responded quickly to my asking for cutting up and removing downed tree branches. They came out the next day or an estimate and were back shortly afterwards to help us out after a storm damaged several trees. I would definitely recommend Parish to family and friends.

I have an older home with very tall mature trees. I had Triton remove two large pear trees that were hanging over my house and garage. They ground the stumps and also trimmed a birch tree. They did exactly what I asked them to do and made recommendations for potential future work. Communication was great and the cost was competitive. I would hire them again.

I worked with Adam on a project that involved topping seven trees and removing the overhang of the trees across two duplex units. Adam also cut down a tree while executing this job which was not part of the original scope. Adam and his team did an exceptional job and I'm highly pleased with their services. Adam was professional and accommodating throughout the project. Adam's pricing is extremely fair and I would highly recommend him. I look forward to working with Adam on future projects.

I highly recommend Training Trees! Brandon removed two large dead ash trees from the side and back of our house. He first provided us with a detailed quote with options and his prices were very competitive. He was then able to fit us in within a short period of time and he did a wonderful job! Not only did he take down the two large trees and grind down the stumps, he picked up several large branches that fell from our other trees due to all of the heavy rain storms.

Brandon and his crew did fantastic work taking down three trees in my backyard. Some power lines had to be dropped to complete the job and he worked very efficiently with kcpl to make sure power was restored immediately after the job was done. Communication was great and the price was very reasonable. Highly recommend and will use again for future tree removal.

Brandon is THE man to call if you want any trees trimmed or removed in Kansas City. I've hired him for a small trimming job and bigger job to take down multiple trees. Each time he was responsive and offered advice on where to trim and where NOT to trim. He takes his job seriously and is fast and the best deal in town. Hands down.

Matt and his crew were excellent. We had four trees that needed fairly significant trims, and they came out and did the job we needed quickly and for a competitive price. We have a tree we want removed eventually, and when we decide to have that done, Matt will definitely be the guy we use. They came when they said they would, and the job took as long as they said it would. Really great experience.

I can't say enough good things about them!! Very reasonably priced and did a fantastic job! They went above and beyond, trimming my trees and removing a dead tree. They even hauled away a brush pile that I had, blew the leaves off of my driveway and cleaned the leaves that had fallen out of my gutters and off of my detached garage. I will recommend them to everyone I know.

Recently bought a house. Multiple people told me a tree was too close and another one probably should be removed as well. I contacted Brandon intending to have him remove both, but he said they were fine, but could use some minor pruning. I didn't expect to be talked out of spending more than I had to. So far the most trust-worthy person I've attempted to hire.

Todd at Go Green Tree came was very knowledgeable with his recommendation and gave me a quote that was very reasonable compared to the competition. His crew came out and took down 3 very large trees in one day and also trimmed up 3 others that same day. It was a huge job but the crew was big and they got it knocked out all in a single day! As a bonus they also picked up all the limbs and brush and that were already on the ground. Not only did they clean their own mess from the tree trimming and removal but they left the yard far cleaner than when they started. Extremely satisfied and would definitely hire again!

We needed a tree and stump removed from our backyard. We are moving and needed the project completed as soon as possible. Matthew was quick to answer our request at a very reasonable price. He communicated very well throughout the project. A large storm interfered with the stump clean up but they did the best they could! I highly recommend Triton.

I really liked the Kingdom Tree guys at first. I had them out to cut down a massive cottonwood tree that was 8 feet from my house. They were willing to work with me on the price and got it down to something that I could afford and were able to make an opening for me quickly. They pulled a bucket truck into my yard between my house and the tree and made pretty quick work of cutting down the tree, but we ran into two issues. The operator of the bucket truck had asked for permission to back into the yard and told me he would put down mats so that they didn't damage the yard. I gave permission, but they did not put down any mats and so they crushed several of edge stones to my planting bed into the ground or pushed them around. Then they went to put down their stabilizer and it crushed into the ground so they pulled it up and kicked the rock out of my planting bed to be under the stabilizer and then tried again. This just crushed my rock into my yard. I stopped them and gave them some board to put under it to distribute the force and save my lawn... Something they should have thought of themselves.. Then, during the cutting of the tree, they dropped one of the cottonwood limbs onto my oak tree, which broke two large limbs of the oak tree tree and deflected the limb of the cottonwood onto my deck where it took out part of my deck's and two pots. They apologized and said they'd fix it. They then finished cutting down the cottonwood tree, and they cut about 90% around the base of the stump, but then left it without cutting through. They came back to fix the deck the next morning. They said they would be back to fix the stone edging they crushed after I had the tree hauled away in case the hauling guys crushed it more. I paid them in full minus $10 for the materials I had to order to fix my cable railing (I forgot about the pots). I noticed the widowmakers now hanging from my oak tree the next day and contacted them to get them removed since they were hanging over the area the hauling guys would be working in and I didn't want one to fall and injury anybody. I was ignored and one of the branched ended up coming down in the middle of the day, thankfully nobody was injured. The hauling guys finished up two weeks ago so I contacted Kingdom Tree through thumbtack, left voicemails with the bucket truck guy, and spoke to the climber. I was told they would try to get out there but never got a date and still haven't gotten a response. So here I am. I paid them in full in good faith and now I'm stuck with a widowmaker that I can't reach on my own and crushed edge stones and scattered rock...
