Bilal is awesome. Super punctual, friendly, and knowledgeable. It is weird to say that I can’t wait for something else to break in my house so he can come back?

Brian was a pleasure to do business with. He and his partner got my house ready to sell and looking sharp! He installed several doors, put in baseboards, repaired steps on my deck, power washed the back of my house and even put in a new mailbox for me. They went above and beyond to get my house sell ready!

Roman and his assistant worked very well together. Roman communicated well and was clear in providing directions to his assistant. They followed safety precautions. They were friendly while getting the job done. Above all, Roman is a person who has integrity! After he left my house he came back and told me that I had given him too much money and returned the money to me. I will hire him again whenever I need another project done. Also, I'll refer him to others as someone they should hire if they need something done. It was a pleasure to have him do some work for me! Thanks Roman! You are the best!

Dominic and his crew did a wonderful job painting the interior of my house. 3000sqft With very tall ceilings and a lot of trim. Mr. Ruggeri was very attentive to detail and helped me through the exhaustive process of choosing what all needed to be done. I wasn’t sure what rooms needed to be painted and Mr. Ruggeri was very patient as me and my husband decided. His guys were very respectful and attentive to detail as well. I would recommend DRPD to anyone looking for a professional, respectful and well priced contractor.

Had some replacement work done on my bathtub/shower. Was able to come out same day. I was impressed with other services they offer. I will call them in the future for more work on the house. Easier to deal with familiar services & businesses that do good work.

I would like to express my most heartfelt gratitude to Barrale Brothers Painting on the job you completed on our house in St. Peters, MO. We needed the entire interior and exterior of the house painted in a quick turnaround time to fix a color mistake another painting company had made during a fire reconstruction project. The inspection and verbal quote was submitted in a timely manner. The quote was then followed up in writing, so we both were crystal clear on scope of work, timeframe and compensation. The price was very competitive and a great value for the service and work received. Upon on time completion the paint job was superior, with no areas of touchup needed or trim work to clean up requested. Thank you for your wonderful job ! You made at least this part of the reconstruction process easy and the results will be enjoyed for years to come. I will recommend your company to all of my friends and family. I wish your business future success!

Don recently redid my second floor porch. The porch was beginning to slide off of the house, but now with Don’s repairs the porch is reinforced and will last for many more years. Don cares about his customers, is responsive, and quotes a fair price. He is also a true craftsman and does not cut corners. I highly recommend him to anyone needing work in the St. Louis area.

Aldi did a thorough and professional job in painting a 2-bedroom condominium that we wanted to sell. He also gave additional price quotations on painting the kitchen cabinets doors and the entry doors which looked clean and professionally done. Aldi is a small business man who is respectful, polite, responsive, and willing to do whatever touch-up work needs to be done before payment. He is honest and reliable. We left him with the keys to the condo for 7 days and he did everything as promised. His price was also the best we received from those who bid on the project. I'd recommend him to anyone who wants a good value and good paint job. Great experience!

Moved into a new house that had only half the yard fenced. Every other quote was more expensive and 6-8 weeks out. Bill came in with one of the more reasonable quotes and was in within a week of committing. Weekend came to do the work: the weather was terrible. He worked through ice and sleet to make sure that we had our fence completed. If you need work done and you want somebody committed to his work, hire Ross Exteriors. You will only be happy.

Dan came to my house yesterday for the first time. I was impressed with his skills in assembling garden tools. He also took down sections of an old privacy fence and disposed the fence for a charge. Finally he cleaned up an area of my garden that has been an eyesore to me. So much was accomplished in a short time and for a reasonable price.

Paul & his helper arrived promptly at agreed time. They were courteous and worked quietly. Their painting was neat and they even took their paint brushes and cleaned away from our house. Usually painters will wash everything in a customers house. I was pleasantly pleased with this. They had to remove old wallpaper which was discovered and a surprise. This set them back on their time, however, they did not complain and completed the job with a good nature. We were quite happy with all their work and would use again, as well as recommend to anyone.

B&C Contracting Specialists did an outstanding job replacing my roof and gutters. They arrived early, stayed late and worked through the heat of the day. They cleaned up all their debris and worked hard to make my house look good again. They went out of their way to make sure everything they did met with my approval, they by far exceeded my expectations. Look no further than them for anything you need.

We own a home in Kirkwood and wanted the lower level bathroom renovated. I used Thumbtack to find a contractor. Jay and Gloria Jarvis of Ecostruction LLC responded to my request for bids. This was the first time I sought a contractor using an online referral, and I admit I was skeptical. We received three responses from contractors and I contacted them all for bids. Jay and Gloria Jarvis, owners of Ecostruction LLC, impressed me with their promptness in getting together information I needed and meeting with me to discuss the job. The bathroom required a total tear down and renovation. From the first appointment with Ecostruction LLC to the completion of the work, they were knowledgeable and professional. They provided comparative costs for labor and products for any and all design elements we wanted to consider. In other words, it wasn't always their taste preferences that they cared about; they cared about what we wanted and what fit our budget. First and foremost, they wanted the best end result, not just in design but functionality for us. At the end of each day, the work area was cleaned up satisfactorily. We always knew when to expect their arrival the next day. Their expertise in renovation made this bathroom rehab a pleasant and gratifying experience. We now have a gem of a guest bath, complete with a Mr. Steam Shower. While Jay takes care of a highly trained crew, Gloria helps the clients choose appliances, fixtures, colors, flooring, and everything that adds the perfect finishing touch at the best price. They do not stop until everything is completed to the customer's satisfaction. The installation and follow-up far outshine other contractors we have had work on our house projects. My Five Star rating reflects my satisfaction with Ecostruction LLC and the trust I have in them to recommend them to others.

I want to recommend Yury and Yelena Pinigin from The Handy Man for their responsiveness and for going the extra mile. There was a leak in the living room of my house in St. Louis. I live in Texas and had been waiting for a roofing contractor to call me back (not a Thumbtack person). I pulled the Handy Man phone number from a previous project by accident. While this is not in their area, they went and looked at my property THAT DAY to check to see if it was the roof or the gutter or something else. They advised me FOR FREE, pretty much knowing it was not going to be work they would do since Yury is not a roofer. I want to thank Yelena for keeping in contact. Having contractors call me back and show up when they say they will has been a challenge. The folks at the Handy Man are exceptional. Thank you, Yury and Yelena!

Mark and Justin discussed everything they were doing each week to keep me abreast of their work and progress. If I had questions they would stop what they were doing and make sure I was comfortable with their answers. They let me pick out everything and had no issues with me making changes. They finished exactly when they promised to have my house completed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
